文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何与他人正确地进行交流。

3 . Miscommunications can sometimes be funny, however, most of time you will feel frustrated or upset. Put some efforts into your conversations, and you can lower your risk of miscommunicating.

1     Thinking about your words allows you to organize your thoughts and prepare to say something meaningful. Especially if you’re about to have an important conversation, make sure your words are organized so that you can say what you mean.

Get people’s attention. It means making sure they are listening to and understanding the words you say. Make eye contact and check to make sure they are listening. If the other person is distracted or in the middle of doing something else, say that you’ll talk later when he or she is more available.     2

Listen closely.     3     Instead of trying to think about what they will say next, just stay engaged with the person who is speaking.     4     One of the best ways to do this is through actively listening. Turn your body toward them and lean in. Don’t turn to distractions, like cell phones.

Avoid interrupting. If someone else is speaking, do your best not to interrupt them.     5    This shows that you’re listening and you care about what they are saying. If you tend to interrupt people often, they may feel frustrated in talking to you and may not communicate all they wish to say.

A.Think before you speak.
B.Check for understanding.
C.Give your full attention when someone is speaking.
D.Avoid calling out or shouting at people to get attention.
E.He or she will appreciate feeling heard and understood.
F.Let them complete their thoughts before you add to them.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。这篇文章主要介绍了加重毯子对改善睡眠质量的作用。

4 . If you have difficulty sleeping well at night, you probably have tried anything that can bring good sleep. One thing might sound a little strange but has been known to work: adding a weighted blanket (毯子) to bedcovers.

About 32% of Americans don’t get enough sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Experts there recommend at least 7 hours of shut-eye per night for adults. But as many as 35% of adults have trouble sleeping from time to time, and 10% regularly have trouble falling and staying asleep.

Just as swaddling (包裹) babies can send them to sleep, using a weighted blanket helps your heart and breathing slow and your body give off feel-good hormones (荷尔蒙). This can help you feel less worried and sleep. The weight is usually between 5 and 30 pounds, which sounds like a lot but is spread out over the entire bed.

A 2020 review looked at 8 studies and concluded that weighted blankets helped people calm down. Another research carried out in Sweden in 2020 surveyed 120 people with sleeplessness and sadness. Those who used a weighted blanket reported that they had better sleep and were less tired, anxious and sad during the day.

“They’ve become the sleep tool to have,” says Alanna McGinn, a lead sleep expert. “I’m a huge supporter of them because they can work so well. People with blood illness should check with their doctor before using a weighted blanket. And if you’re someone who gets a little claustrophobic (患幽闭恐怖症的), it’s probably not the best thing for you,” adds Alanna McGinn.

1. What do the numbers in paragraph 2 show?
A.Some Americans have difficulty sleeping well.
B.About a third of Americans can sleep well for 7 hours.
C.Americans think it a good idea to swaddle a baby.
D.Most Americans have tried weighted blankets for a good sleep.
2. How can a weighted blanket improve sleep according to the text?
A.By keeping you in silence.
B.By making you feel less worried.
C.By keeping you warm all the night.
D.By protecting you from the street light.
3. What does McGinn say about weighted blankets?
A.They are key to a good sleep.
B.They can help to treat patients.
C.They are friendly to people with blood problems.
D.They may not be suitable for people with certain illness.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Hormones playing a role
B.Americans suffering sleeplessness
C.Weighted blankets probably improving your sleep
D.Research dealing with sleeping problems

文章大意:本文是记叙文。为了缓解工作上的压力,作者来到了加里曼丹岛旅行,并从旅行中得到感悟。

5 . In recent fast paced life, the demands and pressures of work left me feeling mentally and physically stressed. I decided to disconnect from my job for a while for a mental break. As a nature lover, without any delay, I came to Borneo, the world’s third largest island.

Upon arrival, a local offered to be my guide, which was a great bonus for me. He led me through the jungle and I was immersed in the exploration. One day, the guide turned off the smooth road and took me across a rough hillside instead. We picked our way gingerly when suddenly, a Rafflesia (大王花) appeared into my view among those stones. More than delighted, I bent down and put my nose practically to feel the flower’s special flavour.

As I was approaching the end of my trip, there was another thing highlighting my trip. We happened to encounter the king of the crocodile (鳄鱼), a saltwater crocodile, which can grow to a length of 6 meters. It was getting dark. When we shone a flashlight towards the muddy shore, little sounds emerged in the darkness as if something unseen underwater had broken the mud. Taking a second look, we spotted two greedy eyes just above the water line. Cautiously, we approached it and finally could figure out it was a baby crocodile. Though alarmed, I could proudly talk big that I had encountered a hungry crocodile in the wild and lived to back.

Though I have settled back into the routine of everyday life now, the experience stays long after the physical journey ended. I have learned to face life’s challenges with a renewed outlook. Despite the rat race of daily existence, try to spare time to spot the breathtaking beauty of nature and the heartfelt connections with others. The world out there is so fascinating.

1. Why did the author go to Borneo?
A.To connect better with his work.
B.To relieve himself of the pressures.
C.To keep an appointment with a local guide.
D.To reward himself for his promotion in job.

A.Patiently.B.Roughly.C.Cautiously.D.Rapidly.
3. What is the tone of the author when recalling the saltwater crocodile he met?
A.Critical.B.Instructive.C.Regretful.D.Humorous.
4. What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Keep a balance between life and work.
B.Battle with challenges from life and work.
C.Research your destinations ahead of time.

In the spare time, Mrs Green always asked her sons, Alan and John to help their neighbor, Ms Maud, to clean her house because she was too old to do it herself. They helped Ms Maud throughout the spring.

Summer vacation just began. The two brothers planned to play tennis with friends every day, so they could make the freshman team. However, Alan’s racket (球拍) was lost, which disappointed him a lot.

As usual, Alan and John came to Ms Maud’s house to help her. They went down the block to the Ms Maud’s and got started. Before cleaning, John put boxes that were thrown around the garage (车库) floor on shelves. When John put a big box on a shelf, he found a tennis racket in the box. It was a new racket, which was exactly what Alan wanted.

“You’ve got to see this.” John took out the tennis racket and showed it to Alan.

“Whoa, where did you get that?” Alan asked. John pointed to the shelf, “It was just in the box over there.” Alan continued to say, “It is so beautiful. My tennis racket was missing. If we take it, I believe no one will ever know.” He looked at the garage door, which was closed.

But John didn’t think it’s a good idea, “Well, we do a lot of things for Ms Maud and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing. It’s a kind of payment for our hard work,” said Alan. Without hesitation (犹豫), John looked at the racket, took it from Alan’s hand and put it back in the box.

“Hello, boys.” At that time, Ms Maud walked into the garage, surprising them. “I’ve made a cake. Can you come in for a piece? I really appreciate all the things you do for me.” “Ugh... sure, Ms Maud,” said John. “Let us finish up and we’ll be right in.” Ms Maud went back to her house.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了如何与别人成为朋友的方法。

9 . Meeting people is the first step to make friends.     1     Here are some useful tips.

Make small talk even if you don’t feel like it

Small talk can make people feel false and meaningless.     2     By making small talk, you show that you’re friendly and open to communicating. In that way, small talk helps you to make the first connection with potential (潜在的) new friends. If someone doesn’t make any small talk, we might think that they don’t want to make friends with us, that they don’t like us, or that they’re in a bad mood.

    3

When you talk to someone new and realize that you have similar interests, the conversation usually goes from stiff (生硬的) to fun and interesting. Therefore, make it a habit to find out if you have any mutual interests or something in common. You can do this by mentioning things that interest you and seeing how they answer.

Don’t write people off until you know them

Don’t judge people too quickly. Try not to think that they are shallow (肤浅的), boring, or that you have nothing to talk about. If everyone seems uninterested, it might be because you have been in small talk.     4

Make people like being around you

When you try to make people like you, it will become easier for you to make friends.     5     If we are with someone with a positive experience, we like that person more.

A.But it does have a purpose.
B.Help people get to know you.
C.Being used to talking to people is important.
D.Figure out what you might have in common.
E.If you only make small talk, everyone will sound shallow.
F.But how do you actually become friends with someone?
G.When you make sure that people like being around you, they will like you.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了如何通过了解不同的文化来应对文化冲突,从而在跨文化谈判中达成合作。

10 . After losing an important deal in India, a business negotiator learned that her counterpart (对方) felt as if she had been rushing through the talks. The business negotiator thought she was being efficient with their time. Their cultures have different views on how to conduct negotiations, and in this case, the barrier prevented a successful outcome.

Research shows that deal-making across cultures tends to lead to worse outcomes as compared with negotiations conducted within the same culture. As we know, cultures are characterized by different behaviors, communication styles and norms (准则). Consequently, when negotiating across cultures, we bring different views to the bargaining table, which in turn may result in potential misunderstandings that can lead to a lower likelihood of discovering value-creating solutions.

Cultural conflict in negotiations is linked with the fact that we, at most times, interpret others’ behaviors, values, and beliefs through the lens (透镜) of our own culture. To overcome this, it is important to rescarch the customs and behaviors of different cultures as well as understand why people follow these customs and exhibit these behaviors in the first place.

Just as important, not only do countries have unique cultures, but teams and organizations do too. Before partaking in any negotiation, take the time to study the context and the person on the other side of the bargaining table, including the various cultures to which he belongs, whether the culture of his culture, the culture of engineering, or his particular company’s corporate culture. The more you know about the client, the better off you’ll do in any negotiation.

Therefore, we see the negotiator has learned her Indian counterpart would have appreciated a slower pace with more opportunities for relationship building. She seems to have run into the issue: Using time efficiently in the course of negotiations is generally valued in the United States, but in India, there’s often a greater focus on building relationships early in the process. By doing research on the clients’ cultures, they can adjust their negotiation method and give themselves a better chance of creating a valuable negotiation experience for both themselves and their counterpart.

1. What resulted in the business woman’s failure in her negotiation in India?
A.Her slow work style.B.Their personal conflicts of interests.
C.Her poor communication capacity.D.The differences between their cultures.
2. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The analyses about the findings of the research.B.The deep reasons for failed cross-culture negotiations.
C.The common misunderstandings in negotiations.D.The causes of conflicts between negotiators’ views.
3. What does the author mainly want to say in Paragraph 4?
A.Rescearch is necessary before negotiating.
B.People should respect cultural differences.
C.Meeting cultural differences is fairly common.
D.Cross-culture conflicts result from ignorance.
4. What is the function of the last paragraph?
A.To come up with a new conclusion.B.To recommend a negotiation method.
C.To summarize the above paragraphs.D.To share different opinions on the example.
