Regular “awe walks” can do wonders

Awe (敬畏) is the feeling of wonder people experience when seeing things that they can’t fully understand. The emotional response has long been associated with better mental and physical health. Taking a simple weekly “awe walk” might help older adults engage more deeply with this positive emotion, new research suggests.

University of California, San Francisco neuroscientist (神经系统科学家) Virginia Sturm and her colleagues did an 8-week experiment with 52 older adults who were all part of a long-term project on healthy aging. This research was part of a larger project looking at low-cost interventions (干预措施) that would improve brain health.

“We asked all the people in the study to take a weekly outdoor walk for 15 minutes,” says Sturm. Half of     2     participants were assigned to the control group, and weren’t given any further instructions.

Once I started thinking about fitness rather than weight, things began to change. Instead of saying “I want to lose three kilos”, I would say “I want to run two kilometres in eight minutes” or “I want to be able to do 30 push-ups”. Rather than cutting out the foods I enjoyed, I added healthy foods to my meals. I could still have a burger now and then, but I would add a salad or an apple.

Finally, I stopped comparing myself with actresses and models and looking for things that were wrong with my face or body. Instead, I made a list of the things I liked about myself. By being positive about myself and my body, I became both happier and healthier.

We need similar guidelines for sitting.

    5     “It would probably be like, for every 30 continuous minutes of sitting, stand up and move or walk for five minutes at a quick pace,” Diaz, the lead researcher said, adding that the study has put us a step closer to the satisfying guidelines. But more researches are needed to confirm their approach.
