文章大意:本文为一篇议论文。文章介绍了短短两个月就风靡世界的应用程序 ChatGPT,ChatGPT是祸还是福,人们的观点因人而异。

1 . ChatGPT, launched in November, 2022, has attracted over 100 million monthly users in just two months, which is considered the fastest-growing consumer app.     1

ChatGPT can write emails, computer code, even academic papers and poems.     2     With various functions, it is suspected to do no good to multiple areas, above all the higher education.

So is ChatGPT a benefit or a trouble?

3     Some universities have banned it due to the warning that it could prompt more students to cheat, especially in exams.     4     Andreas Schleicher, director of education and skills of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development, for instance, said he welcomes ChatGPT because “it gives people a chance” to concentrate less on tasks that technology can perform equally well.

According to a survey covering more than 100 educators and over 1,000 students, one-third of the educators said they believe ChatGPT should be banned in schools and universities, while the rest supported students having access to it. The attitude of most students sees a distinct difference.     5

As a result, the observed value and usefulness of ChatGPT seem to outweigh the risks. What we should focus on has shifted to better deal with the chatbot and its development.

A.The answers varies greatly across the world.
B.It is undoubtedly a shocking achievement.
C.Also, it has succeeded in passing different kinds of exams.
D.By comparison, others regard it as a blessing rather than a curse.
E.They admitted having sought help from ChatGPT to complete their homework.
F.The worry is that ChatGPT could change the basic training structure of higher education.
G.It is widely discussed whether and to what extent AI should be involved in a scientific article.

文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章探讨的是当今许多家长对孩子监管过度,“放养孩子”运动发起人Lenore Skenazy认为应该给予孩子适当自由,让孩子们在没有家长陪同的情况下独立地去做一些事情。

2 . When Lenore Skenazy let her 9-year-old son take the New York subway home by himself 10 years ago, you would have thought that she’d carried out a crime. Now Skenazy started the movement Free Range (放养的) Kids to bring up safe and independent children. Just this month, Utah became a free range state, changing its law to protect parents from being charged with neglect (疏忽)for letting their kids walk alone, or wait in a car for an adult.

Skenazy argues that the risks of giving children some freedom are exaggerated (夸大). Skenazy’s mother used to send her outside at 5 to walk to school. That was just normal back then. And suddenly we hear stories about parents getting punished for letting their 10-year-old son play outside.

We get so used to not knowing our neighbors, not letting our kids walk to school, or play outside, that nowadays, the kids are either in a car or in the backyard, and they don’t get to know the neighborhood. In fact, the world has become safer. We have the technologies to keep track of almost everything our kids do. And so you think you must control them, and you think your child is something that has to be tracked like a package.

The famous case for many parents was the Etan Patz case in New York in 1979. Patz’s parents gave him permission for the first time to walk to the bus stop nearby. He was killed. The story is so terrible that we remember it two generations later. And we don’t allow our kids to walk alone because of one terrible thing that happened 39 years ago. But we don’t say, “I want to drive you to the dentist, but what if we get in a car accident? Think of those people who died in a car accident 39 years ago. I don’t want to be like them. No, we’re not going.” And we recognize that it would be funny to think that way.

1. What do we know about Lenore Skenazy?
A.She used to have full control of her son.
B.She was in favor of Utah’s previous law.
C.She suggests kids be allowed more freedom.
D.She was once punished for neglecting her son.
2. Which of the following is a reason why kids are kept at home nowadays?
A.People remain distant.
B.Kids dislike outdoor activities.
C.Parents know little about accidents.
D.The crime rate is slightly increasing.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards parents’ act of keeping track of their kids?
A.UnclearB.Supportive.C.Indifferent.D.Unfavorable.
4. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To prove accidents are like crimes.
B.To warn parents of a terrible crime.
C.To argue against some parents’ worry.
D.To point out the real danger to children.

China is widely known for its ancient civilisation which has continued all the way through into modern times,     1    the many ups and downs in its history. There are many reasons     2     this has been possible, but one of the main factors has been the Chinese writing system.

At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It     3     back several thousand years to the use of longgu—animal bones and shells on which symbols were     4     by ancient Chinese people. Some of the ancient symbols can still be seen in today’s hanzi.

By the Shang Dynasty (around 1600-1046 BCE), these symbols had     5     a well-developed writing system. Over the years, the system developed into different forms, as it was a time    6    people were divided geographically leading to many    7    of dialects and characters. This, however, changed under Emperor Qinshihuang of the Qin Dynasty (221-207BCE).

Emperor Qinshihuang united the seven     8    states into one unified country where the Chinese writing system began to develop in one direction. That writing system was of great importance in uniting the Chinese people and culture. Even today, no    9    where Chinese people live or what dialect they speak, they can all still     10     in writing.

9 . Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at Hebron High School in Texas. But when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Chinese class, he quickly changed his mind.

“I think Chinese would be beneficial than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language. He speaks Chinese to order food at Chinese restaurants and reads social media posts from his Chinese-speaking friends. While it’s a difficult language to master, the high school student, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. “Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming a growing power,” he said.

Many experts agree that proficiency (熟练) in a language spoken by about 1.4 billion people worldwide will give American students an edge in the global economy.

“People’s interest in Chinese is growing fast,” said Marty Abbott, director of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. “We’re seeing it in all parts of the country.”

Abbott predicts that as many as 100,000 students are now studying Chinese in public and private schools, throughout the US. She said the US government had designated (指定) Chinese as an “important needs” language and provided professional development programs for teachers. “Our government wants to increase our language ability for national security and economic competitiveness,” Abbott added.

At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) set up in many US states. For example, the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas in Dallas has been the home of a Confucius Institute for more than 10 years. It sponsors Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools, where tens of thousands of students are learning Chinese.

1. What is Thomas Cheatham’s attitude towards learning Chinese?
A.He thinks it’s a waste of time and effort.
B.He finds it difficult but necessary for his career.
C.He doesn’t care about learning Chinese at all.
D.He thinks it’s easy to learn Chinese.
2. The underlined word “edge” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.advantageB.quality
C.outsideD.challenge
3. Why does the US government want to increase American students’ language ability?
A.To learn more about Chinese history and politics.
B.To promote Chinese culture and language.
C.To improve international security.
D.To compete with other countries in the global economy.
4. What is the purpose of the Confucius Institutes set up in the US?
A.To establish better relations between China and the US.
B.To spread knowledge of Chinese culture and history.
C.To promote Chinese language learning in the US.
D.To provide financial support for Chinese students in the US.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章解释了为什么旅行是宝贵的学习经历的四个原因。

10 . Travelling is undoubtedly one of the most valuable learning experiences one can have. Whether it’s the people you meet or the things you see, travelling provides more valuable life lessons than school.     1    . Here are four reasons why travelling is such a valuable learning experience:

Travelling forces you out of your comfort zone.

School provides a safe environment where you feel comfortable with people who share similar cultures and backgrounds. Meanwhile, travelling means new foods, cultures, languages, people, and places to explore.     2     And it is a good thing, because it will help you grow as a person.

Travelling allows you to see and experience new ways of life.

3     Reading about it in a textbook is not the same as living it. Travelling gives you a new perspective(观点) on how you live and helps you understand and appreciate different cultures.

    4

Moving to a new place far away from home requires you to adapt to a new culture, language, and customs. Overcoming these challenges and accomplishing things you never thought possible will build your confidence and self-esteem(自尊心).

Travelling helps you be comfortable with uncertainty and the unexpected.

If there’s only one thing you can be sure of while travelling, it’s that trips don’t always go according to plans. There are plenty of things that can go wrong and that can force you to change your plans. Travel teaches you to be flexible, go with the flow, and accept uncertainty.     5

In conclusion, travelling is an enriching experience that provides valuable life lessons that cannot be learned in a classroom. It helps you grow as a person, build confidence, appreciate different cultures, and become more adaptable to change.

A.Travel with an open mind.
B.Travelling helps you build confidence.
C.It pushes you out of your comfort zone.
D.Instead of being told something, you experience it.
E.Travellers love to make plans, but they also like to break them.
F.This skill is necessary in life as plans often change unexpectedly.
G.Nothing compares to experiencing a different way of life firsthand
