1 . On a trip back from Boston, my two little guys and I stopped at a gas station. It was not until I got home that I _________ my wallet had been left there.

My world was righted and made more joyful, not just by being reunited with my wallet, but by the __________ acts of others. Ross __________ a lot of his strength from his faith and his family. He once told his school nurse his __________ food was his family. They just filled him up with so much love.

The virtual choir was the idea of award-winning     1     and conductor Eric Whitacre. Born in the USA on 2 January 1970, Whitacre began studying music at the University of Nevada in 1988. He fell in love     2     Mozart’s classical music when he sang for the university choir. Moved by this music, he said, “It was like seeing color for the first time.” He     3     from university in 1995, and then received a master’s degree in musical composition from the Juilliard School in New York in 1997. Over the next 10 years, Whitacre’s    4     compositions began to become quite popular among choirs and singers. This led to the    5     of the virtual choir. 

In 2009, Whitacre received a video of a girl who was singing one of his works.    6    , he asked his fans to     7     videos, which he then joined together into one performance. His first virtual choir, “Lux Aurumque”, had 185 singers from 12 different countries. It has received millions of     8     on the Internet. Since then, the virtual choir has become a worldwide phenomenon. Whitacre’s next     9     was the Virtual Youth Choir for UNICEF, which was first seen on     10     on 23 July 2014 in the UK. Altogether, 2,292 young people from 80 countries joined in to sing Whitacre’s song “What If”.

It was at the 2012 1SU World Figure Skating Championships that I first saw Japanese figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru. He was competing in free skating with a piece of music from Romeo and Juliet. I was    1     (immediate) attracted to his incredible     2    (perform) along with the expressive music.

Yuzuru has been     3    inspiration for me in my years as a senior high school student. In his career, he    4     (experience) innumerable difficulties and countless injuries so far. In 2014’s ISU Grand Prix, he was badly hurt on the ice due to a collision (碰撞). Though he was bleeding, he still insisted on     5    (compete) with no regrets. What’s more, in the 2018 Rostelecom Cup in Moscow, he couldn’t even walk because of a problem with the ligament (韧带) in his right ankle. But he ended up winning the championship and then    6    (award) the gold medal.

Yuzuru has always trained hard despite the suffering from asthma (哮喘). He bravely     7    (overcome) difficulties so he can dance on the ice and live life to the fullest. From 2012 to 2021, I have been inspired by Yuzuru’s spirit,    8    has helped me push forward no matter what. When    9    (face) with any problem that I think I can’t handle in life, such as being burdened with homework or when my grades are sliding (下滑), I watch videos of Yuzuru skating over and over again to search     10     hope and perseverance. After all, he succeeded against so much uncertainty. So how could I not face my own problems?

8 . Recently, craftsman Qian Gaochao and his son spent more than six months making three “chicken-blood” stone carvings, which showed the taekwondo and wrestling competitions of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. Qian Gaochao is a national inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of the chicken-blood stone carving. He is working on the other carvings related to the Asian Games in the chicken-blood stone museum in Changhua town, Zhejiang Province.

Chicken-blood stone is one of China’s most valued decorative materials and has been used for centuries to create carved works with unique red markings. With its bright blood-red color, bright crystal-like jade texture, quality and shape, chicken-blood stone is admired all over the world. It is valuable in art because of its adaptability, which can be made into decorations of various sizes and forms. It not only records geological (地质的) changes, but also reflects the productivity of different times, living conditions and folk customs.

The stone has become a cultural symbol of deepening the friendship in diplomatic (外交的) activities. For example, in 1972, the Chinese premier gave Changhua chicken-blood stones to Japan as State gifts. In 1986, a seal of Changhua stone was presented to the US. In 2016, the Changhua stone sculpture “Haliaeetus Albicilla Duda Portrait Seal” was presented to Poland. In September 2016, 36 sets of portrait seals were given as gifts to guests who attended the 11th G20 Summit in Hangzhou.

“As a craftsman, I’m not only doing carving work but also recording the development and changes of our society and remembering the era through my carvings,” Qian Gaochao says. He has created fascinating works, many of which are related to important events in Chinese history and famous people who have made important contributions to the country.

“We are also hiring qualified people to continue to promote these traditional skills,” Qian Gaochao says. “Additionally, we often hold research activities and provide training courses, enabling more young students to understand and learn Chinese traditional culture,” he adds.

Economic development is necessary if we want to improve society. There comes a time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible     1     everything from our past as we move towards the future. Finding and keeping the right     2     between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge. 

Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great     3    . In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the     4     led to protests. Water from the dam would     5     damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam, the government     6     to the United Nations for help in 1959.
