It was Ivy Melissa’s first time alone on a city bus. Her parents felt that today, on her half birthday (the day on which she turned nine and a half ) Ivy Melissa should be allowed to go alone in the city to her friend Dana’s house; only three stops away.
Ivy Melissa was so excited, and just a bit nervous. The bus stop was only one block away from her house, but today, somehow, the time it took for the bus to reach her seemed to take forever.
But Ivy Melissa confidently got on board that bus and took a seat by a window in the back row. The only thing which was behind her was the motor (发动机).
The bus started but something seemed to be wrong. Ivy Melissa couldn’t know exactly what was wrong since she hadn’t been alone on a bus before. But she knew that something had to be wrong because of a terrible smell coming out of the back of the bus. When she saw some of the people sitting next to her suddenly looked as if they were getting sick, Ivy Melissa realized that it probably was gas.
She had to do something. But what?
She shouted at the bus driver. But there were too many passengers on the bus. He, for some reason, couldn’t hear her. Then she tried to open the windows in the back of the bus, but they were shut because of the air conditioning. “What can I do?” Ivy Melissa asked herself.
Just then, she looked down and saw that she was wearing those new rock-hard high-top sneakers ( 高帮运动鞋). Ivy Melissa quickly took off one of the sneakers and, with as much strength as she could build up, broke the window nearest to her, letting out the terrible gas, and bringing the attention of the bus driver to the trouble she and the rest of the passengers were having there.

3 . Lying on the northern tip of Beijing Central Axis(中轴线), the Bell and Drum Towers were built in 1272 and rebuilt twice after two fires. At one period in history they were the time-telling centre of the capital city during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Bell Tower
The Bell Tower is 47.9 metres high. This brick-and-stone-made building has two floors. Located on the second floor, the bell is the largest and heaviest in China. It is 7.02 metres high, with a weight of 63 tons. It was made of copper(铜), and you can hear its clear sound from far away.
Drum Tower
Situated 100 metres south to the Bell Tower, it was placed on a 4-metre-high stone-and-brick base. It is 46.7 metres high. It is a two-storey(两层的) wooden building. There was one big drum and 24 smaller ones, but only the big remains from ancient times.
On the New Year’s Eve of 1990, the sound of the bell rang out again and the drum was beaten on the New Year’s Eve of 2001 after being silent for so long. Since then, the drum and the bell have sounded 108 times every New Year’s Eve.

Jim Barr stared in awe (敬畏) at the platform in the crowded school hall. The headmaster marched onto the stage, followed by the captains of the school soccer team and rugby side. Jim watched with envy as each was presented with an honor s jacket for their contribution to the school’s sporting success over the previous year. When the next presentation of honors jacket would come around, Jim knew there was little hope that he would be the receiver of one of these treasured items of clothing.
“I wish you all a happy summer holiday,” the headmaster announced. “Although most of you will be going away to sunnier parts, there are others who will be staying near their home. The local council has asked the school to undertake a project over the next six weeks to help clear up rubbish around the area and separate it for recycling. If anyone is interested, come to my office and you will be supplied with a rubbish picker, bags and heavy-duty gloves.”
Jim knew he would be at a loose end over the holiday, so he went to the office along with five classmates to pick up the equipment needed to gather up the rubbish which littered the streets around the school. When he arrived home, his mother looked at him curiously as he placed the equipment on the kitchen table.
“What is this all about?” she asked with a smile on her face. “Mum, I’m an average pupil and I’m not very good at sports,” he replied. “This waste recycling is one way I can contribute to the good name of the school.”
“Just as long as you don’t get fed up and stop half way through,” said Mum.
“I won’t give up. I have made up my mind to do it well,” Jim said confidently.

Volunteer Opportunities for Kids
Animal shelter volunteeringIf your child is an animal lover, then volunteering at a local animal shelter could be a great option. Most animal shelters provide volunteer opportunities. They need volunteers for cleaning kennels, feeding, walking dogs and so on. Usually, as long as the child has signed permission from their parents or guardian, they can volunteer as young as 14, even younger if their parents bring them and supervise their volunteer time.
TutoringIf your child is a good student and enjoys school or even just a specific subject, volunteering to tutor lower grade students is a great opportunity. Helping struggling students catch up or grasp a concept can make your friend feel great. It is an easy and convenient way to get your teen volunteering after school. And we suggest the age should be older than 14.
Youth sportsAnother great opportunity to get your kid volunteering is in sports. If your child has years of experience with any sport, they can most likely find an opportunity to help out younger kids. Most youth sports need teenage volunteers to be an assistant coach or a referee. Teenagers can volunteer in maintenance to spruce up (使整洁) fields, or in cleanup after game days. The age of volunteers is required beyond 14. Contact any local sports league to get specifics on where they may be needing volunteers.
Service projects for teensCleaning up a common space such as a park or walking trail is a great way to get active in the community, and your teen can even include their friends in their volunteer effort. More detail projects may include something like building a shade structure at a local playground or planting trees. We suggest the age of the kids should be older than 14.
