1 . How exercising changed their life

On the afternoon of last Friday, the English speech competition, organized by our English club, was held in our meeting hall. It begun at 3:00 p.m. and Mr. Lee, our leading English teacher, gave an inspired opening speech. Then two students started to host the competition with both English and Chinese. Fifteen students were attended the competition and each gave an excellent English speech. If the competition finished, the competitors were ranked and prizes were presented to the first sixth speakers. The competition has received positively comments from students and teachers. They both believed that it could encourage more students show interest in English learning.

6 . Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization(WHO).

Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noises for long periods of time, WHO said.    1    

The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (dB,分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.

    2     Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells(听毛细胞）in our inner ears. These cells detect sounds. However, listening to loud noises for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die.    3    

Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud.     4    For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, it may sound uncomfortably loud.

WHO said the “safe level” for most sound is below 80 decibels for up to 40 hours a week.     5    .

7 . In all the world's cultures, people sing, play instruments, and celebrate with music. It plays such an important role in our lives that all fields focus on its study, including one looking at the biology of music. Experts find that because of the way our brains process music, learning to play an instrument or just listening to music can have a wide range of benefits.   

Music education has received a lot of attention. Learning to play an instrument can help children improve math, science, and language skills. One study in Canada tracked children's IQ scores for nine months, discovering that children who studied music had the biggest test score improvements. The secret may lie in the way reading music and playing notes use several areas of the brain, increasing our ability to learn school subjects. For example, reading notes improves spatial (空间的) reasoning skills, which are helpful in solving math problems like fractions (分数).   

Music is also used for medical purposes, such as the treatment of diseases which affect memories. The secret lies in the way the brain processes music. One area near the forehead, the medial prefrontal cortex(脑前额叶外皮), connects music with memories stored in two other areas: the amygdale(杏仁核) and hippocampus(海马体). That's why an old song can remind you of something that happened years ago. For patients suffering from diseases like Alzheimer's, listening to music can help unlock buried memories by strengthening musical pathways to memories.   

With the evidence of music's benefits, it's no wonder some countries make music study a part of their education systems. People are recognizing that more than just a form of entertainment, music is also great for the brain.

The Future Life on Mars

Compared with the life we    1    (live) on the earth now, the future life on Mars will be     2    (total) different.

Firstly, without pollution on Mars, people will be able to drink cleaner water    3     breathe fresher air, so they will be    4    (health).The food on Mars will be different from     5     food now. People will just take    6    (pill) and drink man-made juice instead of eating bread and meat. Secondly, people will travel back to the earth or to other planets for sightseeing     7     spaceship. Additionally, there will be no    8    (fix) school and classrooms. Children will just fly to    9    classroom in the school spaceships. And people won’t work in factories or companies. They can stay at home,     10    ( work) with computers.
