3 . Inventions change how we live, work, play and think about what’s possible. Every year, Time magazine lists the 100 best inventions based on their creativity and impact on our lives. What did the magazine choose this year? Let’s take a look.

Easier to read

OrCam Read is a lightweight, handheld device with a smart camera that can read text from any digital screen or printed surface. If you constantly read large blocks of text or suffer from reading fatigue or even dyslexia(阅读困难), OrCam Read can help. It’s been described as an exceptional on demand tool to access print in work, education and community settings.

Users simply point the device at a book page, an ad, a menu or anything else containing text and press a button. The device will instantly vocalize (发声) text in a natural-sounding voice, either through its tiny speaker or a connected Bluetooth device. OrCam Read also supports text in multiple languages and can even operate without any internet connection.

Easier for bees

Honey is produced by bees. But today’s beekeeping business is not good for these hard-working insects. Bee farmers may kill them after harvesting honey because it’s cheaper than feeding the bees through the winter. To save bees, US company MeliBio has found a way to make the word’s first bee-free honey. They used synthetic biology to create honey directly from plants. This kind of honey tastes just like the real thing, and it is healthy, too.

Easier to eat

Pasta is a popular food around the world. But sometimes you may find it hard to get pasta onto your fork. It’s also difficult to keep the sauce on your pasta. Dan Pashman is a foodie from the US. To solve these problems, he created his dream pasta, called Cascatelli. It's a pasta with a half-tube (半筒型) shape and big ruffles (褶皱). It looks like the letter “J”. How does this special shape help you eat? Bigger ruffles help it catch sauce. And you can easily get it onto your fork because it’s longer. “There are very few pasta shapes that have right angles. It provides resistance to the bite at all angles. It creates kind of like an I-beam (工字钢),and that makes for a very satisfying bite,” Pashman told NPR.

1. What should people do when using OrCam Read?
A.Use it to scan the text.B.Set the target language.
C.Link it to a small camera.D.Connect to the internet.
2. What do we know about the new kind of honey?
A.It consists largely of real honey.
B.It makes feeding bees cheaper.
C.It is produced without any bees.
D.It is better for human health.
3. What is special about Cascatelli?
A.Its creation was inspired by a dream.
B.It comes in the shapes of the letters J and U.
C.Its shape means it can be eaten without a fork.
D.It can hold sauce better than other types of pasta.

4 . Thanks to a new virtual reality film offering 360 degree viewing, armchair travelers around the world can now visit places like the Amazon rainforest. Provided freely by Conservation International, you'll be able to take in the breathtaking beauty and amazing biodiversity that is dished up in a film entitled "Under the Canopy" without worrying about being eaten alive by insects, giant snakes or bird spiders. Besides that, and saving on airfare and getting your passport updated, the film is said to be simply beyond belief in its clarity and realism.

But the purpose of the film goes beyond just providing viewers with amazing visuals in a virtual experience. The makers of the film want to bring awareness to the fact that this once vast wilderness and its occupants are shrinking rapidly and disappearing due to deforestation. In other words, the magnificent sights and sounds that you'll enjoy during your virtual wandering around the Amazon's beautiful rainforest need badly to be protected.

If you 're not aware, a statistic in connection to annual forest loss in the region can be clarified: the loss is equal to 1.5 times the size of Yellowstone National Park. Now, if you're still a little unclear about the significance of this, Yellowstone is 3,472 square miles in size, which is 2,221,766 acres, if that helps you out.

In the film, you will have a virtual tour guide, Kamanja Panashekung, a native to the area whose ancestors have lived in the region for countless generations. During his educational tour Panashekung explains to viewers of the film the many ways in which the rainforest supplies his people with everything they need to survive on a daily basis. His story is actually pretty fantastic, especially if you live in city and can't imagine what it would be like living in such a wild and remote area of the world.

1. What aspect of the movie is mainly talked about in Paragraph 1?
A.The popularity.B.The horror.C.The strengths.D.The purposes.
2. What feeling do the film makers wish the audience to have?
A.Guilt.B.Curiosity.C.Excitement.D.Concern.
3. How does the author develop Paragraph 3?
A.By giving an example.B.By giving a description.
C.By making a classification.D.By making a comparison
4. Who would be especially attracted to the guide's story?
A.Those who have interest in wild animals.
B.Those who have ancestors living in the region.
C.Those who think about developing rainforests.
D.Those who long for outdoor surviving experience.

5 . If you're a runner who secretly hates running, here's some good news: settling into a leisurely jog rather than an all-out run may actually be better for your health in the long term.

A team from Denmark followed over 5,000 people taking part in the Copenhagen City Heart Study, and tracked whether they were non-joggers or joggers who kept a slow, moderate, or fast pace. The participants' health was tracked over the next 12 years, and so was their mortality (死亡率): 28 of the joggers and 128 of the non-joggers died.

The connection was this: Joggers of mild and moderate intensity had a lower risk of death than the fast joggers. In fact, the lowest mortality risk was that of the mild intensity joggers. The fast-paced joggers had about the same mortality rate as sedentary (久坐的) people. This suggests that there may be an upper limit to hard exercise, after which the benefits fall off.

"The U-shaped association between jogging and mortality suggests there may be an upper limit for exercise amount that is best for health benefits," said study author Peter Schnohr. "Anything more is not just unnecessary: it may be harmful." From the current study, jogging just three times per week, for less than 2.5 hours/week was associated with the lowest overall mortality risk.

There've been a lot of mixed messages about the "right" amount of exercise and what intensity is best. The World Health Organization has suggested that the current 150 minutes/week recommendations are strenuous for most people to tackle, and that expectations should be lowered, since, after all, anything is better than nothing. Everyone probably has a level of activity that feels best to him or her. But at least the growing consensus seems to be that more-if you're pushing yourself very hard-is not necessarily better. And it may even be worse.

1. What was the study designed to find out?
A.The advantages of jogging over running.
B.The common causes of death from exercise.
C.The difference between non-joggers and joggers.
D.The relation between exercise amount and health.
2. Who will face the highest mortality risk according to the study?
A.Those fast-paced joggers.
B.Those slow-paced joggers.
C.Those jogging 150 minutes per week.
D.Those jogging just three times per week.
3. What might Peter Schnohr agree with?
A.The early bird catches the worm.
B.Wealth is nothing without health.
C.To go beyond is as wrong as to fall short.
D.Enough exercise brings about happiness.
4. What does the underlined word "strenuous" in the last paragraph mean?
A.Intense.B.Wide-ranging.C.Necessary.D.Far-reaching.

9 . Vincent Van Gogh(30 Mareh 1853~29 July 1890)was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. He is considered one of the greatest artists with great influence on 20th century art.

Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. After a brief period as a teacher, he became a missionary(传教士)worker in a very poor mining region. He did not begin his career as an artist until 1880; however during the last ten years of his life, he produced more than 2,000 pieces, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches(素描).

He worked only with sombre(昏暗的)colours until he met Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism in Paris. Van Gogh incorporated(合并)their bright colours and style of painting into a uniquely recognizable style. Most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years, when he was suffering from serious mental illness.

In 1890, at the age of 37, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest. He died two days later, with Theo, his brother and his best friend, at his side, who reported his last words as “The sadness will last forever”. Theo, unable to come to terms with his brother’s death died 6 months later and was buried next to him. It would not take long before his fame grew higher and higher.

Vincent Van Gogh’s mother threw away quite a number of his paintings during Vincent’s life and even after his death. But she would live long enough to see her son become a world famous painter.

The only painting he sold during his lifetime, The Red Vineyard, was created in 1888. It is now on display in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Russia. Several paintings by Van Gogh rank among the most expensive paintings in the world.

On March 30, 1987 Van Gogh’s painting Irises was sold for a record 53.9 million at Southeby’s, New York. On May 15, 1990 his Portrait of Doctor Gachet was sold for $82.5 million at Christie’s, thus establishing a new price record.

10 . Six annoying “facts” people have to finally stop believing in

1. Walt Disney did not create Mickey Mouse.

His close friend and collaborator Ub Iwerks did, though he was “denied credit” for creating this major piece of pop culture history. Iwerks came up with the character in 1928.

2. Albert Einstein never flunked a math class as a child.

When the adult Einstein was shown a newspaper article claiming he had, he replied, “Before I was 15, I had mastered differential and integral calculus (微积分).” While Einstein achieved high grades throughout his childhood education, he “hated the strict protocols followed by teachers and rote learning demanded of students” at the schools he attended.

3. Napoleon Bonaparte was not short.

Despite the fact that his name has become synonymous with “angry short man,” Napoleon Bonaparte was actually of average height for the time period in which he lived. His contemporaries described him as being 5'2", but the French measured height differently back in the day, so he was actually around 5'5". That made him just “an inch or so below the period’s average adult male height.”
