6 . Last summer holiday, Aunt Emily took us to a safari park (野生动物园), not far from Liverpool.

I was very happy to go as I had never been to a safari park before. It’s a very interesting park, full of wild animals running freely.

When we got there, we bought our tickets and drove into the park. We were very excited at the thought of going to see the lions. But to get to the lions’ place we had to go through the monkeys’ land first. And that was an unforgettable experience because they climbed all over the car, ate apples and bananas, and threw all kinds of things at us. They seemed very unfriendly.

Anyway, we went on our way to the lions’ place where we had to lock ourselves in the car as we knew lions could be dangerous. A lion came up very close to us. Then it was on the bonnet (车盖). 9 . The other day I was doing some shopping and a homeless man, who was untidy and spent most of the time talking to no one in particular (特别的), walked toward a group of us at the checkout stand. I overheard him say to the man in front of me,” I don’t want to steal from this store would you buy me some food?”

The man in front of me pretended (假装) not to hear him; it was as if he were not there. I waited patiently for my turn to be questioned, but it never came. So I asked him, “Can I buy you something to eat?” He gladly accepted. The man got a bag and began putting cupcakes in the bag. As my things were being rung up I watched the man put the cupcakes into the bag: 1, 2, 3, ... He finally stopped and I asked him how many he had got and he replied 6.

The cashier looked at me in surprise and then added them to my order. After I was through, the man was walking around the store; he said he wanted something to drink, too. The cashier seemed to be keeping a close eye on him. I admit I was too, as I didn’t want him to steal anything either. I told the cashier that if he got a drink I’d just pay for it.

In the end, we both ended up leaving the store, but he stood right outside holding the cupcakes and talking to himself. Or maybe he was talking with someone who he thought was there.

This man’s circumstances (处境) saddened me. How many of our homeless also suffer from a mental (精神的) illness? Maybe that’s even what led him to be homeless. I also thought about the watchful eye the cashier and I kept over him. Maybe for different reasons, but still I hope to run into him again someday. Maybe we can sit down and have lunch together.

1. What did the man in front of the author do when the homeless man talked to him?
A.He walked to the checkout stand.B.He asked the homeless man some questions.
C.He bought some food for the homeless man.D.He paid no attention to the homeless man’s request.

A.He was afraid that the homeless man would steal.B.He had a great interest in the homeless man’s behavior.
C.He wanted to prevent the homeless man from making trouble.D.He needed to make sure the homeless man would make a payment.
3. What did the homeless man do after leaving the store?
A.He talked with someone.B.He spoke to himself.C.He thanked the author.D.He ate the cupcakes.
4. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Patient.B.Honest.C.Caring.D.Responsible.

10 . A few extraordinary female singer-songwriters from the 1970s helped from music as we know it today, and continue to inspire so many with their soulful melodies (旋律).

Joni Mitchell

Joni Mitchells influence goes beyond her own generation. Her songwriting continues to be a source of inspiration for many, who regard her position as a pioneer of female expression in music.

The 1971 album Blue showed Joni’s truthful self, telling the stories of her experiences in life and in love. Blue was later chosen by the New York Times as one of the 25 albums that represented “turning points and the highest points in 20th-century popular music”.

Carole King

Carole King wrote or co-wrote over 118 hits between 1955 and 1999, making her the most successful female songwriter in the second half of the 20th century. However, King found herself less recognized than her husband and writing partner at the time, Gerry Goffin.

As the 1970s arrived, so did Carole King in full bloom. 1971 saw the release (发行) of her album Tapestry. The album was highly significant not only commercially but symbolically.

Joan Armatrading

Joan’s place as a female pioneer in music continued as she became the first UK female artist to be nominated (提名) for a Grammy in the blues category, going on to receive two further nominations. An artist who is confident with who she is and what she wants to create, Armatrading famously keeps her private life to herself and lets her music do the talking.
