文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了去暹粒旅游需要注意的一些安全事项。

1 . Affectionately known as Temple Town, Siem Reap (暹粒) in Cambodia has been rapidly developing over recent years to cater to tourists that stream through to witness the wonders of the Angkor Archaeological Park. Aside from these awe-inspiring ancient structures, there are plenty of other things to see and do, as well as countless places to eat and drink, and make the most of your nights out. Most people enjoy a night on the tiles of Siem Reap without incident, but street theft, scams, and other petty crimes can never be completely discounted in any major tourist destinations in the region. Pick pocketing and bag theft are the most common incidents, but can easily be avoided by simple use of common sense. Be aware that locals are very proud people, and displays of anger or rudeness from a foreigner are never well received.

You can guarantee yourself a great night by being cool and smart by following some basic rules:

※Don’t carry more money than you need: there are plenty of ATMS across town, and most Siem Reap establishments are relatively accessible.

※Try to keep to main roads and avoid walking alone, especially if you are lost.

※Keep wallets, handbags, mobile phones and cameras close to you, and don’t leave your belongings unattended anywhere: reducing the opportunities for theft is the best way to reduce the likelihood of it happening.

※Be careful (ladies especially)on motors or tuk-tuks not to leave bags hanging loosely over your shoulder. Keep them out of reach of passers-by, and the same goes for cameras too.

※If you hire a motorbike, try to buy your own padlock and never leave it unlocked, unless it’s in a ticket parking place

※Be polite and friendly with local people, whatever the situation.

※Negotiate your fare to avoid problems later.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四部根据文学作品改变的著名影片。

3 . You know that classics like Little Women and To Kill a Mockingbird started as novels. But you probably didn’t know that these other famous movies also came from books.

Hidden Figures

This film told the story of real-life Katherine Johnson and other female African-American mathematicians who helped drive the United States into space in the 1960s. It was actually based on a 2016 non-fiction book and the movie did boost sales of the book.

Forrest Gump

The 1994 movie which was based on the book by Winston Groom won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for the star Tom Hanks. Although the movie’s critical and box-office success gave the book a huge boost, it’s the film that made its mark on pop culture history.

The Girl on the Train

Paula Hawkin’s psychological thriller, about a woman on a train who thinks she sees something strange out of the window, was a huge success. But unlike the fast—paced, can’t-be-put-down quality of the novel, the movie was boring.

Field of Dreams

It’s hard to describe the plot of this movie: Ray Kinsella hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field in his Iowa cornfield, and what happens next explores the themes of lost dreams, childhood heroes, and healing the pain of the past. The 1989 movie is based on W. P. Kinsella’s 1982 original, Shoeless Joe, but cuts out some extra characters.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者和他的父母讨论关于是否去Eton(英国最著名、最昂贵的男子寄宿学校)读书的故事。

4 . My father had returned from his business visit to London when I came in, rather late, to supper. I could tell at once that he and my mother had been discussing something. In that half-playful, half-serious way I knew so well, he said, “How would you like to go to Eton?”

“You bet,” I cried quickly catching the joke. Everyone knew it was the most expensive, the most famous of schools. You had to be entered at birth, if not before. Besides, even at 12 or 13, I understood my father. He disliked any form of showing off. He always knew his proper station in life, which was in the middle of the middle class, our house was medium-sized; he had avoided joining Royal Liverpool Golf Club and went to a smaller one instead; though once he had got a second-hand Rolls-Royce at a remarkably low price, he felt embarrassed driving it, and quickly changed it for an Austin 1100.

This could only be his delightful way of telling me that the whole boarding school idea was to be dropped. Alas! I should also have remembered that he had a liking for being different from everyone else, if it did not conflict (冲突) with his fear of drawing attention to himself.

It seemed that he had happened to be talking to Graham Brown of the London office, a very nice fellow, and Graham had a friend who had just entered his boy at the school, and while he was in that part of the world he thought he might just as well phone them. I remember my eyes stinging (刺痛) and my hands shaking with the puzzlement of my feelings. There was excitement, at the heart of great sadness.

“Oh, he doesn’t want to go away,” said my mother, “You shouldn’t go on like this.” “It’s up to him,” said my father. “He can make up his own mind.”

1. The house the writer’s family lived in was _________.
A.the best they could affordB.right for their social position
C.for showing offD.rather small
2. His father sold his Rolls-Royce because _________.
A.it made him feel uneasyB.it was too old to work well
C.it was too expensive to possessD.it was too cheap
3. The writer’s father enjoyed being different as long as _________.
A.it drew attention to him
B.it didn’t bring him in dispute (争论)
C.it was understood as a joke
D.there was no danger of his showing off
4. What was the writer’s reaction to the idea of going to Eton?
A.He was very unhappy.B.He didn’t believe it.
C.He was delighted.D.He had mixed feelings.
5. We can know from the passage that _________.
A.Children who can go to Eton are very famous
B.Children can go to Eton if they will
C.It is very difficult for a child to get admitted by Eton
D.Children don’t have the right to decide whether they will go to Eton

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要解释了唐代诗人李商隐的《锦瑟》这首诗的创作背景以及诗人想要表达的思想。
6 . 语法填空

The Sad Zither (锦瑟) is a famous seven-verse poem written by Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin (813-858). Due to its rich imagery, the poem is regarded as one of the     1    (hard) poems to explain and translate.

At the beginning of the poem, the poet looks at his zither and recalls the death of his beloved wife. The big number of strings, which might not be the real number,     2     (be) mentioned to show his feeling. With so many strings, his zither creates complicated tones,     3     (suggest) the sorrow and depression the poet feels. The reality is so cruel that he wishes everything     4     happened were untrue. In this part, he uses four Chinese ancient     5     (myth) and legends. Zhuangzi, a philosopher, dreams of being a butterfly and couldn’t distinguish dream     6    reality; the ancient emperor Wang becomes a cuckoo and always cries; mermaid’s tears become pearl and vapor of jade from Lantian County can be seen in the sunlight. The first three stories all create     7    sad atmosphere. Though the last legend describes a beautiful scene, it’s hard     8     (reach), implicating the hopelessness.

Actually, the four stories he chooses indicate Li’s dissatisfaction with his life.

In the end, the poet directly expresses his point. He writes about his regret toward the passing years and his     9     (capacity) to change anything, even if he     10     (give) the chance to live those years again.

9 . Gone are the days when you and your best friend shared everything about your life. Whether you’re at fault or she is, mending a broken friendship is far from easy. If the relationship means a lot and you aren’t willing to simply throw it away, fixing it is possible. That’s what I have learned in the past months.

When I first moved to Florida, I felt so out of place. I had come from a small town and was so unsure of myself. Luckily, my husband and I moved into a friendly neighbourhood, and things became better.

For many years, my neighbour across the street and I shared happy times. But then a misunderstanding occurred, and she quit speaking to me. I tried many times to speak to her about the issue and tell her how sorry I was that I had let her down. But she refused to take my phone calls and avoided me when I was outside.

During our conflict, my husband and I put our house up for sale. We weren’t leaving the neighbourhood because of a feeling of hurt; we were having twins and needed more room for our growing family.

Months later, I moved away without talking to her and putting an end to our misunderstanding. It always made me sad when I thought of how poorly it had ended. For many times I wished we had renewed our friendship. I just hated the feelings left from our unsolved conflict. It was like a scab(痂) that kept reopening and worsening with pain and upset.

About eight months after we moved, I decided to take a drive back into the old neighbourhood. As I drove down my street, I saw my former neighbour washing her car in her front yard. I knew that I needed to stop and greet her. I opened the car door and got out. To my surprise, she came up and gave me a big hug. We both apologized for our actions, and I felt that I finally achieved closure. I was able to say I was sorry and have it accepted.
