1 . The factors that cause youth unemployment often differ among regions and labor systems. In much of Western Europe overemphasized labor protection makes it more difficult for youths to land good jobs. Since firing full-time workers is so complicated and expensive, employers are unwilling to take on new staff, while people who are already employed, mainly older workers, often keep their jobs for life. In developing countries with high birthrates and very young populations, like the Philippines, growth isn't strong enough to absorb the wave of youngsters entering the workforce each year.     1    Young people entering the workforce are often the most vulnerable in economic downturns - new employees are often the first to get sacked(被解雇) , while college graduates find few employers willing to hire.

2    In Spain, Italy and Japan, for instance, companies looking to gain flexibility in regulated labor markets often offer new, young staffers only short-term contracts. These contracts, which sometimes last for only a few days, usually come with low salaries and few benefits. Since such staff is temporary, employers have little intention to invest in training.

Facing such obstacles, young people everywhere are finding that traditional route to success -education - isn't paying off as much as in the past.     3    They will often be offered low-skilled jobs from waiters to supermarket clerks. A March report from the UK's Office for National Statistics showed that the share of recent college graduates in Britain working in lower-skilled jobs rose to nearly 36% in 2011 from less then 27% a decade earlier.     4    Typical is Cairo's Ahmed Said. He graduated from college with a business degree, and after performing the obligatory year of military service, he applied for jobs in accounting and data entry. But Said, 24, had no luck, and today he works as a waiter at a cafe near Tahrir Square. “This was my last choice” he says, “and this is the job that I get.”

A.Young graduates often find themselves competing with more-experienced workers.
B.More and more college graduates are forced to take jobs below their skill level.
C.They started applying for any positions they could find in other countries.
D.In some parts of the world, such jobs are all that is available to college graduates.
E.Yet youth unemployment also has common roots throughout the world.
F.Those young workers who do find employment are often trapped in awful contracts.

2 . Washing the dishes can help you live longer in later years

Even a small increase in light activity, such as washing dishes or a little gentle gardening, might help lower the risk of an early death among older adults, researchers say.

“It is important for elderly people, who might not be able to do much moderate intensity activity, that just moving around and doing light intensity activity will have strong effects and is beneficial,” said Ulf Ekelund, a professor and first author of the study at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. However, the study finds that there is more “bang for your buck” if you engage in intense activity compared with light activity.     1

Published in the BMJ, the latest research involved a review of eight studies encompassing a total of more than 36,000 people with an average age of almost 63 years. Participants were followed for five to six years; 2,149 deaths were recorded. Crucially, all of the studies involved monitoring the physical activity of individuals who had activity trackers.     2

For each study participants were split into four equal-sized groups, based on the total amount of time spent active, and the risk of death assessed, taking into account factors such as age, gender, body mass index, and socioeconomic status. This was then repeated for an amount of activity at different levels of intensity. The results were analysed together to give an overview.     3    The results held for different intensities of activity. The team said the study supported the message “sit less and move more and more often.”

4    It only looked at the situation for middle age and older adults, most of whom lived in the US or Europe, and some of the effect could be due to those people with a higher risk of death being less likely to engage in physical activity. Physical activity levels also were only measured over one period of time.

A.It is said that higher levels of any physical activity help keep off an early grave.
B.The studies did not rely on self-reporting, which, the experts noted, could be unreliable.
C.The latest study backs up previous research suggesting reducing time spent sitting still is beneficial.
D.However, the study had limitations.
E.A short period of intense activity is viewed as beneficial as much longer periods of lesser activity.
F.The team found a greater volume of activity overall was linked to a lower risk of death.

4 . Writer and journalist Cristina Odone aroused widespread anger by suggesting that her daughter was being pressured to take science for graduation exams and this was unreasonable for a child with a literary bent. She even claimed that “this focus on STEM[Science,Technology,Engineering and Mathematics] subjects sends a message that makes her and me uncomfortable:doing a man's work is more impressive than doing a woman's.”

Like many others, I totally disagree with her position as a scientist. Taking science to age 16should simply be seen as part of obtaining a well-rounded education. Furthermore, identifying STEM as a man's subject leads in part to our serious lack of diversity(多样性)in the scientific workforce. Meanwhile, many male authors and poets might be surprised to learn that literature is“woman's work”.

Novelist Lucy Ellman once wrote,“The purpose of artists is to ask the right questions, even if we don't find the answers, whereas the aim of science is to prove some silly points.” But proving some silly points might save your life, light your home, allow you to surf the web or visit your relatives living far away. Only someone who has never considered how extensive the outputs of science are in our society could write such a“silly”sentence.

However, having said that, I am not trying to denigrate the work of the humanities. I do not see this as an either/or situation but it's all part of being human. I admire and appreciate those who try to express things hard to be described in words, but it simply isn't my strength. I may wholeheartedly believe that science is vital but that doesn't mean I think the humanities(or indeed the social sciences)are not. Since science costs more to do than arts subjects, more funding should go to science. That statement is not equal to saying that the humanities should not be properly funded. Somehow, we are constantly being put in opposition, a divide that is damaging to both scientists and non-scientists.

So why are the humanities important to me?I would say it is exactly because I am human. I sit here typing listening to a Schubert piano trio. I have been reading EP Thompson's The Making of the English Working Class to try to understand how our society was and is the shape it is. Scientists may be capable of dealing with the ethics(道德标准) of their work, but they cannot and should not answer the question of whether we should do this in isolation. Answering the many questions that our developing scientific capabilities throw up requires the input of researchers from many fields.

So let us enjoy our capabilities on all fronts, recognizing that we each have different strengths and weaknesses. It's time to ban the damaging divide that sets one part of the research community against another and celebrate our humanity as well as the Humanities.

1. The writer quotes words from Cristina Odone and Lucy Ellman to show that________.
A.doing a man’s work is more impressive than doing a woman’s
B.some people may have a narrow understanding of science
C.the purposes of artists and scientists are totally different
D.a well-rounded education is crucial to the diversity in society
2. By saying “I am not trying to denigrate the work of the humanities”, the writer probably means________.
A.“I am not an expert in the work of the humanities”
B.“I don't think the work of the humanities important”
C.“I don't want to play down the work of the humanities”
D.“I admire and appreciate the work of the humanities”
3. Why does the writer mention listening to music and reading books in Paragraph 5?
A.To explain how extensive the outputs of science are.
B.To call on scientists to understand the society and the shape of it.
C.To prove that the humanities are important to scientists too.
D.To advise scientists to deal with the ethics of their work.
4. The purpose of this passage is to________.
A.reveal people’s weakness in expressing complex thoughts in words.
B.reject the idea that science only proves some silly points.
C.illustrate that scientists have strengths and weaknesses.
D.appeal to stop treating humanities and science as opposites.

Digital technology — email and smart phones especially — have vastly improved workers' ability to be productive outside of a traditional office. Even so, most white-collar work still happens in an office. One reason is that, according to findings of a new survey of office workers     1     by Wakefield Research for the IT company Citrix, most bosses are     2     about remote working. Half of the workers say their boss doesn't accept it and only 35 percent say it's     3    .

Suspicious bosses will likely have their doubts reinforced (加深) by the same survey, which shows that 43 percent of workers say they've watched TV or a movie while “working” remotely, while 35 percent have done housework, and 28 percent have cooked dinner. If people find no one     4     him, he will become lazy and no pressure particularly in their own house where it is very comfortable place.

It is true, however, that working at home makes people much more     5    , because it allows workers to take care of annoying housework while still getting their jobs done. It's much faster, for example, to shop for groceries at a quarter to three than to stand in line during the after-work    6    .

The fact that such practices remain officially unaccepted     7     how far we haven't come as a society from the days when we expected every full-time worker to be supported by a full-time homemaker.

More broadly the Wakefield survey suggests that employers may be     8     a low-cost way to give workers something of value. Sixty-four percent of those survey     9     who haven't worked     10     would rather give up some bonus in order to get even one day a week working from home. Under such circumstances, smart firms need to find ways to let their employees have enough flexibility to manage their time efficiently..

7 . Recently I attended several meetings where we talked about ways to attract students and keep younger faculty members from going elsewhere. It seems higher education has become an industry of meeting-holders whose task is to “solve” problems — real or imagined. And in my position as a professor at three different colleges, the actual problems in educating our young people and older students have deepened, while the number of people hired — not to teach but to hold meetings — has increased significantly. Every new problem creates a new job for an administrative fixer. Take our Center for Teaching Excellence. Contrary to its title, the center is a clearing house (信息交流中心) for using technology in classrooms and in online courses. It's an administrative sham (欺诈) of the kind that has multiplied over the last 30 years.

I offer a simple proposal in response: Many of our problems — class attendance, educational success, student happiness and well-being — might be improved by cutting down the bureaucratic (官僚的) mechanisms and meetings and hiring an army of good teachers instead.

If we replaced half of our administrative staff with classroom teachers, we might actually get a majority of our classes back to 20 or fewer students per teacher. This would be an environment in which teachers and students actually knew each other. The teachers must be free to teach in their own way — the curriculum should be flexible enough so that they can use their individual talents to achieve the goals of the course.

Additionally, they should be allowed to teach, and be rewarded for doing it well. Teachers are not people who are great at and consumed by research and happen to appear in a classroom. Good teaching and research are not exclusive, but they are also not automatic companions. Teaching is an art and a craft, talent and practice; it is not something that just anyone can be good at. It is utterly confusing to me that people do not recognize this, despite the fact that pretty much anyone who has been a student can tell the difference between their best and worst teachers.

1. What does the author say about present-day universities?
A.They are effectively addressing real or imagined problems.
B.They often fail to combine teaching with research.
C.They are over-burdened with administrative staff
D.They lack talent to fix their deepening problems.
2. According to the author, what kind of people do universities lack most?
A.Good classroom teachers.
B.Efficient administrators.
C.Talented researchers.
D.Motivated students.
3. What does the author imply about the classes at present?
A.They facilitate students' independent learning.
B.They help students form closer relationships.
C.They have more older students than before.
D.They are much bigger than is desirable.
4. What is the author’s suggestion for improving university teaching?
A.Creating an environment for teachers to share their teaching experiences.
B.Hiring more classroom teachers and allowing them to teach in their own way.
C.Using high technology in classrooms and promoting exchange of in formation.
D.Cutting down meetings and encouraging administrative staff to go to classrooms.

It was very hot outside. The Chengdu Little Warriors were facing off against the Legendary Mighty Dragons of Beijing at a local indoor skating-rink (溜冰场). When I arrived, the Little Warriors, whose oldest player was eight years old, had just     1     their northern competitors. Near the lockers, a poster advertised hockey classes. Olympic     2     has begun to spread so far south that Chengdu now has nine skating-rinks and local hockey leagues for both kids and adults. It clearly shows China’s     3     to take the opportunity of holding the Olympics to promote winter sports across the country.

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games were praised as a success by almost every     4    : the wonderful opening ceremony, the tight security, the large crowds of     5     volunteers, and Team China’s place atop the gold-medal rankings. Each aspect of the event signaled the country’s arrival as a world power, capable of competing with the best and winning.

If 2008 was about China getting a seat at the table, the 2022 Winter Olympic Games     6     a different purpose. China's status as a global power is no longer in question. Beijing 2022 will not be just a two-week sporting event but the     7     of a multi-year campaign to promote winter sports. “ We no longer need to put on shows of ten thousand people performing Tai Chi,” said Zheng Kan. “ Now we just want to show that we are relatable.”

While the audience for winter sports may still be a small, relatively rich group, it is growing. To prove his commitments (承诺) to winter sports, President Xi Jinping     8     a “ three hundred-million-person winter-sports plan.” The plan is aimed at raising China’s participation rate in winter sports from less than two percent to twenty-two percent. Some schools in Beijing have already introduced courses     9     to winter sports. A high-speed rail line that was opened at the end of 2019 cuts travel time between Beijing and Zhangjiakou, where many of the events will be held in 2022, to under an hour.

With all these efforts, the 2022 Winter Olympic Games are     10     to be wonderful and unforgettable.
