1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One fall evening, 13-year-old Briar Omar agreed to look after his four younger sisters when his parents went to the grocery store to pick up the family dinner. The parents were confident that responsible big brother Briar with their protective dog called Mandy, was capable of managing the family in their absence. During that brief time, an unexpected thing happened: The home suddenly went up in flames(火焰). It was up to Briar and Mandy to save his family.

The children smelled smoke soon after their parents left for the store. They turned around to search for where the fire came from and were shocked and frightened to find their baby sister’s playpen(玩耍护栏) on fire.

The first thought that came to Briar’s mind was to rescue his little sisters. The family had previously discussed what to do in the face of danger, so he was prepared to act.

In a few minutes, flames were climbing the ceiling(天花板). Smoke was filling up the hallways. The horrible fire quickly spread throughout the home.

Briar remained calm and focused on the urgent task of saving his four younger sisters: Peyton, 12, Jocelyn, 3, Willow, 1, and 6-month-old baby Sawyer. He quickly picked up the two babies and rushed the older sisters out of the door to safety. After making sure his sisters were far away from the danger and breathing in fresh air, he ran back to save their home despite the flames surrounding him.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要讲述一个由音乐家,计算机科学家和历史学家组成了特殊团队利用人工智能来完成贝多芬的第十交响曲。

3 . Beethoven was born over 250 years ago, yet his music is still played daily around the world. Beethoven wrote many famous pieces of music, but he’s probably best known for his nine symphonies (交响曲). Before Beethoven died in 1827, he began a 10th Symphony, but never finished. What he left behind were some notes about the piece and a few “sketches” (草图) — short bits of written music.

In 2019, a special team of musicians, computer scientists, and historians was formed. Their goal: to try to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony to celebrate his 250th birthday. The team wanted to come as close as possible to producing the symphony that Beethoven meant to write.

The team trained an AI to help with the symphony. They turned every piece of music that Beethoven ever wrote into a form the computer could understand. By feeding the program all of Beethoven’s music, the AI could look for the way Beethoven wrote. Other members of the team studied Beethoven’s notes and sketches, and attempted to find out what Beethoven was planning to do.

One early test told the team they were on the right track. They took a few minutes of music created by the AI based on Beethoven’s sketches, and played it for Beethoven experts, musicians, and reporters. No one could tell which parts had been written by Beethoven and which parts the AI made up. Finally, the AI connected the little musical bits into a symphony. It took the team over two years to complete Beethoven’s 10th Symphony-40 minutes’ music.

So Beethoven now has a 10th Symphony. And though Beethoven didn’t write it all, the team feels sure that the music is very much like what he might have written, if he’d had the chance.

1. What is the purpose of the team?
A.To train an AI to create music.B.To finish Beethoven’s 10th Symphony.
C.To celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday.D.To find out what Beethoven wrote.
2. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The challenge of the team.B.The functions of the AI.
C.The technology the team used.D.The great efforts the team made.
3. What do we know about the 10th Symphony from the last two paragraphs?
A.It’s created by the AI entirely.B.It’s played for the public at first.
C.It’s like Beethoven’s original.D.It took two years to practice.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Science.B.Sports.C.Health.D.Education.

4 . In June of 2021, during the pandemic, the hospitals in New York City were crowded with healthcare workers and a group of nurses flying from the West Coast to lend a hand. One of the young nurses was assigned a mother of six children. She was on a ventilator (呼吸器), quarantined (隔离) from her husband and frightened. The young nurse, Carly, decided to cheer her up by bringing a group of nurses together to sing “My Girl.” With a tube in her throat and needles in her arm, the young mother cried and raised a few fingers to say thank you.

With a simple hand gesture, the mother expressed her gratitude. “That little thank you changed me forever,” Carly says. “I went because I wanted to make a difference. I came home, grateful for what I learned.”

Gratitude moves us to be kinder. A woman who lost her husband during the pandemic felt lonely. Her neighbors, grateful for over 50 years of friendship, expressed their gratitude by delivering a box of fresh produce to her house every Monday during lockdown. It’s our gratitude that becomes the power to create good acts.

In the early morning quiet, when we are awakened by the uncertainty of the coming day, we can find peace by mentally listing the things we are grateful for. And we reach a new place in our life that we accept and appreciate. What’s next is to share. Send a thank-you note. Make a call. Look around. There is always someone to thank. By doing so, we become something new that makes a difference to someone’s life.

1. Why did the nurses sing a song?
A.To remove the fear.B.To cheer the mother up.
C.To relieve their stress.D.To encourage workers.
2. What changed Carly?
A.The mother’s thank.B.Patients’ pain.
C.Horrible pandemic.D.Kind nurses.
3. What does the story in paragraph 3 imply?
A.Time tests friendship.B.Friendship defeats pandemic.
C.Gratitude leads to kind acts.D.Good acts tie all together.
4. What does the author expect us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Thank someone.B.Accept our life.C.Find peace.D.Change ourselves.

6 . “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for,” said John A. Shedd, an early 20th century author. Throughout the Covid-19, we’ve all become used to assessing risk in new ways. We’ve come to understand, though we can never get rid of risk altogether, we have great power to make choices both large and small to protect ourselves.    1    It stops us from stepping outside of our comfort zones and trying new things.

Developmental psychologists talk about “positive risks” — socially acceptable risks that our lives can benefit from.    2    But what about these, who develop into adults? Researchers have found that happiness for older adults is being able to choose how they spend their time, including ways that are adventurous, new and even-like hiking or other outdoor activities — mildly risky.

One guide to positive risk management lists ways that people can make sure their risks are on the “safe" side of risk range. For example, to ensure a successful bike ride, you should in advance equip yourself with a fully-charged cell phone and a full water bottle.    3     Or if you are, concerned about your physical capacity, consult a certified trainer or medical professional before departure.

4    This means adapting to changing situations. In response to the deadly virus, people choose to step back into normal life only after they are vaccinated. In this way, people could be confident that the risk is tolerable.

Nobody wants to be needlessly risky. But using our newly-acquired risk assessment tools, we can once again learn and grow in our lives.    5

A.Take risks in a positive way.
B.But the self-protective mind state carries its own risk.
C.Overall happiness is one benefit of positive risk-taking.
D.Remember to tell one of your friends or family your destination.
E.Besides taking preventive steps, flexible thinking is also encouraged.
F.Like a ship sailing away from its harbor, that is what we were built to do.
G.For teenagers, this means risks like running for monitor or trying out for a team.

8 . Accidents happen almost daily. Some accidents are minor and some are serious but others may be fatal. We read about such accidents nearly every day in the newspapers. It is wrong for people to think that accidents occur only on the roads or highways, or even at worksites. Home accidents are just as common. Because very few home accidents are reported, people tend to think that there are few accidents which happen in homes.

There have been many cases where people fall to their deaths from high-rise flats. Children often fall from staircases while coming down the stairs. Old people may slip on wet or slippery floors if they are not careful.

Nowadays there are a lot of modern electrical appliances such as rice-cookers, electric irons, and kettles which make life easy for the modern housewives. These appliances can kill if they are not used in the proper way.

Gas stoves used for cooking are also dangerous if they are not properly handled. They may cause burns or, in more serious cases, they may even cause fires.

But all such accidents can be prevented if we are careful and obey simple rules of safety. For example, it is unwise for people to try repairing their own electrical appliances if they do not know how. It is safer for them to get their faulty appliances repaired by a qualified electrician.
