文章大意:这是一篇说明文。肯尼亚制作了一款免费的手机应用程序,帮助跟踪野生动物,他们使用应用程序中的信息来帮助保护动物。

2 . Kenya is home to nearly 400 species of mammals. Officials say it is getting more difficult to protect them, as climate change and human activities damage their natural environments. The free mobile phone app, Mammal Atlas Kenya, or Makenya, lets any user who sees a wild mammal identify it and give its location. Users can also give other details.

“You can also add the behavior,” said Dr. Simon Musila, a researcher at the National Museums of Kenya, Musila said there is a need to have many people use the app to get more information about the animals. This can help the small number of mammal specialists in Kenya. The specialists have kept records of the animals’ changing environments and survival conditions.

Many people, including safari guides, visitors, students, or anyone who goes out and sees the animals, could use the app, Musila said. They can upload images and add details, such as the number of mammals and their exact locations.

Samson Onyuok uses the Makenya app to help protect animals in his country. “I think as a Kenyan, that is my little way of contributing to the conservation initiatives,” Onyuok said. Users like him have reported more than 2,500 mammal sightings since August.

Experts say that while Africa is not the cause of much climate change, it is badly affected by it. Dr.Philip Muruthi, vice president of the African Wildlife Foundation, said that the birth rate of rare mammals and the survival rate of young ones are dropping.

“It is very hard to benefit or manage what you don’t know,” he said. “That is why this app is so important. It is going to tell us which species we have, where they are, and maybe which ones are highly endangered, what we need to do about them. And especially not just the big things but also the small things, like the bats.”

Wildlife officials say Kenya is home to at least a third of the mammal species in Africa and are hopeful app users will help protect them.

1. What can be known about Makenya?
A.It helps keep track of wild animals.
B.It requires professional training to use.
C.It is only available to mammal specialists.
D.It is affordable with all entertainment functions.
2. How did Onyuok feel about what he had done?
A.Incredible.B.Regretful.C.Proud.D.Stressful.
3. Why is it important to use the Makenya app?
A.Approaching endangered animals is forbidden.
B.Fierce animals are too dangerous to get close to.
C.Expert skills are needed to manage wild animals.
D.Managing animals is based on access to information.
4. What is the suitable title of the text?
A.New Functions Are Added to Mobile Phones.
B.Kenya Uses Mobile App to Help Protect Animals.
C.Mobiles Users Enjoy Animal World through App.
D.Kenyan Animals Are in Urgent Need of Protection.

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Now one foot, now the other

Bobby was named after his grandfather, Bob. Bob was the one who helped Bobby learn to walk. “Hold on to my hands, Bobby,”his grandfather said. “Now one foot, now the other.”

One of the best things Bob and Bobby did was to play with the old wooden blocks that were kept on a shelf, in the small sewing room under the front stairs. The blocks had pictures of animals on them. Bob and Bobby would put the blocks one on top of the other very slowly, building a tall tower. Sometimes the tower would be almost finished. “Just one more block,” Bob would say.“And that’s the elephant block.” And they would carefully put the elephant block on the very top. But Bob would sneeze and the tower would fall down. Bobby would laugh and laugh. Then Bob would sit Bobby on his knee and tell him stories.“Bob, tell me the story about how you taught me to walk,” Bobby would say. And his grandfather would tell Bobby how he held Bobby's hands and said, “Now one foot, now the other. And before you knew it ...”

Then one day Bobby came home from school and his grandfather wasn’t there. “Bob is in the hospital,” Dad told Bobby,“He’s had a stroke (中风) and he is too sick to see anyone.” Months later, his father told him that Bob was coming home.

“Now, Bobby,” Dad said, “Bob is still very sick. He can’t move or talk. And he can’t remember us.”Bobby just nodded and didn’t say anything.

One day, Bob tried to say something to Bobby, but the sound that came out was awful. Bobby ran out of the room.“Bob sounded like a monster!” Bobby cried. “He can’t help it, Bobby,”Mom said. So, Bobby went back to the room where Bob was sitting.

“I didn’t mean to run away, Bob. I’m sorry,” Bobby said. “Do you know who I am?” Bobby thought he saw Bob blink (眨眼睛) his eyes.

“Mom,” Bobby called. “Bob knows who I am.”

“Oh Bobby,” Mom said. “Your grandfather doesn’t recognize any of us.”

文章大意:这是一篇说明文,文章主要介绍了一个美化照片的计算机程序和关于美的讨论。

5 .

Is the woman pictured on the right more attractive than the woman on the left?

The photograph on the right was changed using a new “beauty making” computer program, which uses a mathematical formula involving 234 measurements of distances between facial features to get a theoretically more attractive version, while keeping the basic appearance of the face unchanged. Unlike changes done in fashion magazine photos, wrinkles were not smoothed and hair color was not changed.

The program is the latest attempt to combine beauty and science, a subject that has drawn increasing academic interest in the last decade.

Studies have shown there is surprising agreement among people of different cultures about what makes a face attractive. Most important is symmetry(匀称), along with youthfulness, skin smoothness and vivid eyes and hair color. Yet, like the many other scientific or mathematical attempts to define beauty, this software program raises complex and difficult questions about the understanding of beauty.

“How can they prove something is more or less beautiful?” said Lois Banner, a history professor at Chicago University, who studies changing beauty standards. “There can never be a single standard of beauty because so much of it is culturally influenced.”

After viewing “before” and “after” photographs of different people, Banner said the original faces were more attractive. “Irregular beauty is the real beauty,” said Banner, adding that attempts to measure beauty are driven by the media's efforts to define beauty and who is beautiful.

Martina Eckstut, the woman whose photo was beautified for this article, said she was struck by how different she looked. “I think the ‘after’ picture looks great, but it doesn't really look like me at all.” She added, “I would like to keep my original face.”

For centuries people have tried to define a universal ideal of beauty. “The first reaction we have to faces will be based on face symmetry.” said Alexander Nehamas, a professor who has written about beauty. “But in real life we don’t just see a face. We see faces as people express their emotions and ideas, and all those aspects of the face are essential to our deciding whether a face or a person is beautiful.”

1. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.shocked because her face looked ugly
B.prefer to get her face changed although it didn't look like her at all

4. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A.criticize the attempts to create artificial beauty
B.introduce a beauty program and a discussion about beauty
C.discuss what makes a person beautiful
D.to encourage people to change their appearance

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了George Lam开发的一款名为“家庭协会”的应用程序。该程序将华裔美国人的声音联系起来。

8 . Composer George Lam has always liked writing music inspired by places.

“There are all these places in Chinatown that are both hidden and meaningful” he says stepping out of the way of passers-by while leading a tour of the neighborhood. “To uncover some of those hidden things in a city walk that you might not ordinarily notice—l wondered. is there a piece in that?”

It turns out that there’s not just a piece but a whole app Lam interviewed five Chinese Americans from around the country; asking them about their experiences in Chinatown: plus questions about their ancestors. their families and their memories. He then set the answers to music the instruments drawing attention to each person’s distinct pattern of speech.

Lam created the app Family Association. He calls the piece—the free app—Family Association, after the important folk groups that line the streets of the neighborhood Chinese family associations have been a bridge between new immigrants and more established ones since the late 1800s. In Chinatowns across the country they’re a place to find resources or an apartment, talk business or polities, maybe get a COVID shot. But they’re also a place to socialize with people who share similar experiences.

Five of the neighborhood’s associations are anchors (锚点) for the app. Visitors use the build-in map to see locations of the associations. As they walk closer to one of the family association buildings, the focus is on one of the five oral history participants, telling their stories. These stories aren’t about the family associations instead they’re about the Chinese-American experience and how they’ve felt supported by Chinatown.

But Lam thinks of the app itself as a kind of virtual family association. connecting these Chinese-American voices with each other, even if they’ve never met. And he hopes to connect with visitors too—at the end of the soundwalk,   users are given a chance to record their own memories.

1. How did Lam deal with the interviewees’ answers?
A.By setting them apart
B.By organizing them in order.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。研究人员研发了一种电子筷,使食物尝起来更咸,有助于减少食盐摄入,同时不会影响食物的口味。

10 . Cutlery (餐具) including chopsticks, knives, forks and spoons which delivers an electric shock to change the taste of food could help cut down salt in fast food. Scientists have developed a pair of chopsticks, which can make food taste saltier, sour or bitter without the need for extra seasoning (调味). They are also working on a spoon and fork that could make food taste spicier or sweeter. This “digital seasoning” technology could help food manufacturers and restaurants to reduce the amount of salt they put into food without relinquishing taste.

They work by delivering pulses of electricity to the tip of the tongue to stimulate the tastebuds(味蕾). Dr Nimesha Ranasinghe, an assistant professor who led the work on the electric cutlery, said, “This technology is aimed at creating a virtual taste sensation.”

Some Chinese takeaway food and ready meals were recently found to contain up to 11 times more salt than a bag of crisps — more than half of an adult’s daily allowance. Salt is known to be linked to serious health problems like heart disease and stroke.

But using a pair of electric chopsticks could help cut salt levels without influencing the taste, said Dr Ranasinghe. The technology, which Dr Ranasinghe initially developed while at the University of Singapore, works by installing two electrodes (电极) into each chopstick or the end of a spoon. These electrodes send a weak current through the tip of the tongue when they touch it to stimulate the taste buds.

By controlling the frequency and strength of the electric current, the researchers can stimulate either sourness, saltiness or bitterness. They say up to 80% of people experience changes in saltiness and sourness with the devices and 70% can sense changes in bitterness.

Dr Ranasinghe said he was also working on ways of imitating sweetness and spiciness by rapidly heating and cooling the tongue. It could lead to a spoon that allows desserts to taste sweet while having lower sugar levels or a fork that can give a curry extra heat without the need for extra chilies (辣椒). Dr Ranasinghe said: “We have some early findings of imitating sweetness, a mint-cool sensation and hot or spicy sensations.”

1. What seasoning cutlery has been developed?
A.Chopsticks.B.Knives.C.Forks.D.Spoons.
2. How does the seasoning cutlery work?
A.It cuts down salt in food.
B.It adds extra seasoning in food.

A.Removing.B.Attracting.C.Acquiring.D.Compromising.
4. What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A.Give yourself an electric shock to make takeaways healthy.
