5 . We bought a Shamrock trailer (房车) in the fall of 2019 in anticipation (期待) of our three-month journey to Baja, Mexico. The camper (露营车) would be home base for all the fun and adventure our family, myself, my husband and our three teenagers, would have all the way.
It took three days to drive from Calgary to Las Vegas and the temperature went from negative 30 to 15 °F-a miracle! But by the time we made it to San Diego, California, we had visited two RV mechanics to fix water leaking from the water tank and a bed heater blowing up. Thankfully, while we waited for repairs, we could listen to waves lapping on the shore.
Eventually, we crossed the border into Mexico at Tijuana and pushed our way down the shore coast. While we swam, ate Mexican food and watched sunsets, the Shamrock kept throwing us surprises. We all learned to savor (尽情享受) the good moments while dealing with the bad.
Driving through Utah, our truck began making noises. The truck’s engine had completely broken, and we needed a new one. We holed up (躲) in St. George, Utah, to wait for repairs. One evening, we were heating up dinner when the oven let out a big WHUMP! The whole camper shook.
After a few weeks, we left our truck in Utah—the engine repair wasn’t going too well—and drove home to Calgary. There could not have been five travelers so happy to stay in their house for two weeks.
Eventually, we hired someone to drive our truck and the Shamrock to Calgary, but he arrived with just the truck. The camper was causing problems, and the keys got lost, so it was left in Idaho. It’s still there; we recently marked its one-and-a-half-year anniversary of storage.
This brings me to the point of this essay: For Sale: A lively 30-foot Shamrock camper. Keeps you on your toes! Sleeps five. $9,000. Pick-up is somewhere in Idaho. Bring some tools to break into it.

Chloe was 83 years old and lived by the ocean shore in a big beautiful house. She wished her son Steve would visit her, even if for only a day. Of course, the young man had a family of his own now, a darling little daughter Eva, and a business to take care of. Steve got on video calls with Chloe every other day. However, Chloe thought of her son and granddaughter, wishing she was with them. One day, Chloe heard sounds from the neighboring house. Chloe looked through the window and was delighted to see that she had new neighbors.
One morning, when Chloe woke up and walked along the shore, she heard the sounds of water being splashed and the sound of children laughing wildly. She followed the sound and was concerned on finding the twins from the neighboring house standing knee deep in ocean water. Something didn’t feel right. “Why would anyone leave their kids unattended on the shore?” Chloe thought. She grabbed the kids’ hands and walked them to their home. As Chloe opened the door, she found the young mother lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. Chloe didn’t waste a second in calling 911.
The first responders managed to revive (恢复) her consciousness on the spot. “My boys! Ralph! Ray!” the woman cried out to her kids as the ambulance took her away. Chloe said, “Don’t worry. Everything will be alright. I’ll take care of your sweet boys.” She kept her promise and looked after the kids like a grandmother. She took Ralph and Ray in and let them sleep in the bedroom that was specially made for her granddaughter Eva.
It was during these days that she knew that the boys’ father died of illness. Chloe knew that the neighbor, Phoebe, had been trying to make ends meet by selling sweaters and socks that she knit. Looking at Phoebe’s children eat and drink with such joy, she realized how much she longed to see her little Eva. By the time Phoebe came home from the hospital, the kids had already started calling Chloe “Grandma”.

8 . “Ice baths” are routinely used by professional athletes after sports events. Dipping into “icy” water, usually around10°c, for 5 to 10 minutes is claimed to improve muscle recovery and enhance future sports performances.
Johana Lanner is an expert in muscle physiology from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
What effect do ice baths have on exercise performance? As ice baths help muscles recover, it may follow that they can better sports performance.
To measure the effect of ice baths on exercise performance, different types of exercise should be taken into account, such as endurance or strength training. Another expert from Australia thinks that after strength exercise, cold water baths may in fact prevent the benefits of exercise.
A.Unfortunately it is not that simple. |
B.But what is the science behind these claims? |
C.So ice baths could help to extend this benefit. |
D.Effects on endurance training may be quite different. |
E.So ice baths are beneficial to all athletes to relax muscles. |
F.He says ice baths are effective at relaxing the painful muscles. |
G.Professional athletes usually use ice baths to help muscles recover. |
9 . When visiting a laboratory or museum and admire an eyeball or a tiny dead creature floating in a glass bottle, you see the preservation power of alcohol. Scientists have been relying on it since the 1600s to preserve their curious specimens (标本). And, if done correctly, it can sustain a sample for hundreds of years. But, how does it work?
“The long and the short of it is that it’s poisonous to certain kinds of microorganisms that would cause decay (腐烂),” said professor Bill Carroll or Indiana University Bloomington. He used wine as an example. It’s made as yeast (酵母) eats sugar from grapes and then releases alcohol. But the yeast releases so much alcohol that the concentration becomes poisonous and kills the yeast. And that alcohol content-around 14%-helps delay the growth of microorganisms for years.
“Preserving other organic materials-Such as DNA, tissues or even entire animals- requires a higher alcohol concentration,” said Katherine Maslenikov, the fish collections manager at the Burke Museum in Seattle. For example, Maslenikov might take a fish specimen. After some initial preparations, she puts the fish specimen in a bottle of 70% alcohol and 30% of water. “For long term storage, 70% alcohol seems to be that magic number,” Maslenikov said. “There’s enough water to help the specimen hold its shape, and enough alcohol to prevent the growth of microorganisms.”
Alcohol at even higher concentrations, for instance 95% ethanol (乙醇), works ns a dehydrant (脱水剂), meaning it removes and replaces the water in the cell, tissue or whole-body specimen with alcohol. This technique is a common way of preserving DNA.
It can be tricky to decide what percentage of alcohol to use. Using too much or too little can affect the sample’s shape and flexibility, or even lower its ability to preserve the sample. High concentrations of alcohol used to dehydrate a specimen will preserve it. But Maslenikov said this process can also cause a specimen to change in size (from the loss of water) and become easily broken (form the hardened proteins). Sometimes that’s OK; it all depends on what you are trying to preserve.
