1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get at the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea: the piggy bank would help save my money so that, at the end of the year, I might have enough for that bike I dreamt about. He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised that I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.

Whenever he gave me a little bit of money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clearly for saving in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.

Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful pens, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about ice-creams or pens went away. So for almost six months, I only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake (地震) had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了交友的重要性和策略。

3 . “I feel unlikable, lonely and hopeless,” said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. “It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What’s wrong with me?”

Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character experience loneliness at least sometimes. It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. We all need others in our lives.

Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection (拒绝), many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we’ve got to get beyond this.

If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider the following two.

Be willing to take the initiative (主动权). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non-aggressive (无攻击性的) way that you are interested in being friends with her.

Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with “yes” or “no”. For example, don’t ask “Do you have a dog?” Instead, say “So, tell me about your pets.” Avoiding asking “yes” or “no” questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one-word answer.

1. Why does the author begin the text with Lisa’s worry?
A.To set a sad tone.B.To share Lisa’s pain.
C.To introduce the topic.D.To teach readers a lesson.
2. What can be a risk caused by reaching out to others according to the passage?
A.Being refused by others.B.Putting ourselves in danger.
C.Being treated in a rude way.D.Losing interest in communicating.
3. What can we know from Paragraph 5?
A.Shy people are hard to talk to.B.Popular people are often easy-going.
C.Just waiting for chances will waste our time.D.A proper way is important in making friends.
4. Why does the author suggest not asking “yes” or “no” questions?
A.It is considered unfriendly.B.It will leave a bad first impression.
C.It shows the poor quality of the speaker.D.It isn’t good for keeping a conversation going.

Eleven years of dance and going on twelve that year, she doubted it would end up like any other year. She might be stuck in any empty spot and didn’t know what to do with her next dance move. Little did she know that year would change her completely.

That year, Lily felt lucky that Shanda would choreograph (编舞) for her dance, Lily expected to work with Shanda, a young talented dancer, to have an okay dance, but she never expected she would have such an impressive impact on her way to dance.

The moment Lily walked into the marble floored, wall-to-wall mirrored rooms, she already felt like Shanda had faith in her. Shanda smiled at her with appreciative eyes. In the following days, Shanda always encouraged her, “Work to the best of your ability and keep going.” When she wanted to give up, Shanda told her that the real importance of dance was to love it.

Throughout their hard work and devotion, not only did Lily’s ability to dance grow, but also their friendship grew. Shanda became more than a teacher to Lily. She was also a close friend that Lily could turn to for anything. Shanda gave her encouragenent when Lily needed edit the most, and Shanda was always there to cheer Lily up when she felt down.

As the year quickly came to an end, it was high time for Lily to show her dance to the audience. As she walked to the backstage filled with other dancers warming up and expecting their performance, she prayed for a good performance that would convey her improvement. The rhythmic music before her rang in her ears. She waited anxiously for her turn. Finally, after what seemed like days, the hostess announced “Lily”.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了现代技术(AI和VR)怎样应用在文化遗产的保护上。

5 . Wherever we go, we are surrounded by history. Across the globe, cultural heritage is passed down through generations. It is in the buildings and structures around us. It is in the arts and artifacts (手工艺品 ) we treasure. It lives in the languages we speak and the stories we tell. But today, it is under attack as never before. Not only is the damage of time intimidating our cultural heritage, but wars, climate change, globalization and tourism are all exacting a heavy price. Technology is now the most important weapon in the battle. Here’s how technology is preserving our cultural heritage.

As you can imagine, creating the replicas (复制品 ) via crowdsourced 2D images is extremely time-consuming. Increasingly, artificial intelligence (AI) is being used to do all the required sourcing, allowing millions of images to be stored in a matter of hours. AI will also make restoration-and-preservation of existing cultural heritage far easier and much better than former methods.

Virtual reality (VR) technology will play a leading role in preserving our cultural heritage in the coming years. Many of the most important sites and architecture are easily damaged. Human interaction with these locations is doing a great deal of harm. Wastes left could be seen everywhere, causing many problems. As more cultural heritage sites and objects are digitally mapped and recorded, VR technology will increasingly become the way that people experience them. We’ll all eventually be able to walk through places, look at and touch artifacts and works of art without ever seeing them with our own eyes.

Finally, our cultural heritage will be preserved via technology. Efforts in research, innovation (创新), data sharing and project work will help promote and preserve the cultural heritage of countries all across the world.

1. What does the underlined word “intimidating” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Fading.B.Preserving.C.Recording.D.Threatening.
2. How does VR help to preserve cultural heritage?
A.By recycling huge amounts of waste.
B.By stopping visitors touching artifacts.
C.By reducing human effects on the sites.
D.By educating people about the sites’ importance.
3. What is the author’s attitude to technology in preserving the cultural heritage?
A.Positive.B.Unclear.C.Doubtful.D.Unsupportive.
4. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A.How Technology Changes Arts
B.What Cultural Heritage Means to Us
C.Prepare for an Innovation in Technology
D.Preserve the Ancient with the Advanced

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了丽兹·默里如何通过自己的努力从无家可归到考入哈弗大学,最终取得成功的故事。
7 .

From homeless to Harvard … it’s an unlikely turn of events. Liz Murray’s life is a triumph (胜利) over misfortune, and an amazing example of the importance of Dreaming Big. Murray’s upbringing in the Bronx, as the child of addicted parents, was filled with severe challenges. There was never enough food in the house, the apartment was dirty and drugs were everywhere. By age 16, Murray’s mom had died and she was homeless — sleeping in parks, riding the subway all night, and living as a high school dropout on the streets of New York City.

Suffering this pain, Murray always imagined her life could be much better than it was. “I knew I had to change my situations for the better, and that no one could do that for me. But, I quickly found that I also could not do it alone. I had to take responsibility first, and then I had to find help — a community of caring people to help me get there.” Determined to change her life, Murray finished high school in just two years, and with the help of devoted mentors (导师) and teachers, she was awarded a full scholarship (奖学金) by the New York Times to Harvard University — all while camping out in New York City parks and subway stations.

Her story sounds like a Hollywood movie — and it practically is. Lifetime Television produced a movie about Murray’s life story entitled Homeless to Harvard, which was nominated (提名) for three “Emmy Awards”. Murray received the White House “Project’s Role Model Award” and Oprah Winfrey’s first-ever “Chutzpah Award”. Her memoir (回忆录), Breaking Night, landed on the New York Times best-seller list after it came out and it quickly became an international best-seller published in twelve countries, in eight languages.
