1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Brady was a recently retired search and rescue dog. He was not happy and missed his owner Al because Al had gone out on a rescue mission without him. Al’s nephew Steve took Brady along when he and his friend Zach went on a overnight hike. But suddenly Steve and Zach smelled something burning and they realized that lightning had set the woods on fire. Wind-blown flame had leaped from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer had turned the forest into a tinderbox and the thunderstorm wasn’t helping much. It had more wind and lightning than rain. Zach pulled Steve’s arm.“Let’s go! We can make it back to the river we crossed today.” Steve pulled Brady’s leash and their heads down against the strong fire-wind, they hurried down the path they had followed earlier. The air was full of smoke, and pine branches broke from burning trees with a crisp sound. Steve kept his eyes on the route. All they had to do was to make it down to the river…

Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead of them lay a dense curtain of smoke across the path. They’d never make it through that. They would have to find another escape route. The dog was pulling at his leash trying to draw them away from the smoke. This was what Brady was trained to do, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed to him they were moving away from the river.

Brady lifted his head and smelled the smoky wind. Suddenly, the dog ran away and disappeared. The boys yelled and shouted for him,but he didn’t come back.

They had no choice but to leave him behind. Heartsick, Steve and Zach went up a slope. He couldn’t blame Brady for panicking and escaping. He himself wanted to run even though he didn’t have a clue which way. They hadn’t gone far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came running toward him.

2 . A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in the UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who make calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.

The system cannot tell the difference between a driver and a passenger on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phones. Using a directional antenna (天线),the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of duration (持续时间) long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands-free devices which, when picked up, will prevent the activation.

While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice- and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a "future development".

Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement (执行) technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.

1. Why is the roadside system used according to Paragraph 1?
A.To send out cellphone signals to drivers.
B.To detect drivers' illegal use of cellphone.
C.To monitor people's use of phones while driving.
D.To warm people against using pones while driving.
2. How does the detector of the roadside system work?
A.It measures the length of the phone.B.It warns drivers with a phone in hand.
C.It picks up radio waves from handsets.D.It activates the vehicle's Bluetooth system.
3. What does the text suggest drivers do with the road warning sign?
A.Swift to Bluetooth while driving.B.Have a close watch of road signs.
C.Avoid being picked up by detectors.D.Stop using a hands-free mobile phone.
4. What will the county council probably do in the future?
A.Share the devices with the police.B.Make the system more advanced.
C.Replace the police with the new system.D.Take steps to settle road safety problems.

3 . It has always been thought that when it comes to tornadoes, the most peaceful place is the centre: the eye of the storm. But a photo taken this week in the small Canadian town of Three Hills, Alberta, suggests that there is perhaps no place more peaceful than inside the calm mind of Theunis Wessels.

It all started when Mr Wessels’ wife, Cecilia, was warned by their nine-year-old daughter that he was cutting grass in their yard when a violent tornado appeared in the distance. When her husband refused to come inside, saying it was moving away from them, Mrs Wessels took a photo to show her parents the storm. The photo, which has been shared widely on social media, is a masterclass in calmness.

In it, the sockless Mr Wessels, dressed casually in summer shorts and sunglasses, is seen never being upset by the disastrous column of cloud. “I took the picture just to show my mum and dad in South Africa, ‘Look, there’s a tornado,’ and now everyone is like, Why is your husband cutting the grass?” Cecilia told the Times Colonist.

When asked later about the tornado’s approach to him, Mr Wessels responded, “I was keeping an eye on it,” seeming as cool as his gardening style and attracting more than a little respect. “Alberta, Canada,” wrote one admiring Twitter user, “where men face the elements and do what needs to be done.” A writer for Esquire magazine struck a pensive note: “I can understand Theunis,” Peter Wade admitted, “sometimes when the world is raging outside, the only thing you can do is keep your small area of it.”

1. How is Paragraph one developed?
A.By listing theories.B.By giving examples.
C.By analyzing causes.D.By making comparisons.
2. Why did Cecilia take the photo?
A.To post it on social media.B.To record her husband’s heroic act.
C.To inform her parents of the tornado.D.To prove what is the most peaceful place.
3. Which may make Mr. Wessels respected?
A.His way of gardening.B.His calmness in the face of a tornado.
C.His bravery in fighting the tornado.D.His rich knowledge about tornado.
4. What is the main idea of the passage?
A.A man ignored a tornado in Canada.B.There are some features of tornado in Canada.
C.A man survived surprisingly from a tornado.D.A picture caused heated discussions.

8 . My love for dogs goes as far back as my first memory. As a little girl,I collected dog toys. At 5 years old,I was ready and willing to run away with the family dog after the threat of giving him away when he chewed up the sofa. Luckily he stayed and my affection for man's best friend continued. As an adult,my reasons for wanting to adopt a dog were purely selfish. I wanted a companion. I wanted a young, energetic dog that would need long walks or runs to help keep mc active to stick to an exercise routine.

Little did I know that my four﹣legged friend and love for dogs would help me feel more at home in and fall in love with my Shanghai community. It seemed to me that being a tall blonde didn't already attract a lot of curious stares;add a 12﹣kilogram black dog that believes everyone is his best friend to the picture and locals seem even more intrigued. The decision to adopt Xiao Hei definitely fulfilled those early selfish desires, but the experience has also brought me closer to my neighbors and made me feel more at home.

A few months after I first brought Xiao Hei home,I spotted the group of elderly Chinese people who gather at the park. After realizing they go there most weeknights,I decided it would be a good way to help Xiao Hei socialize with other dogs. After a few visits,it was not only an opportunity for him to play but also a chance for me to practice my Chinese. "Most Chinese give their dogs English names, but you've given him a Chinese name. Very interesting,"they laughed. With that simple laugh,it seemed that barriers were broken and with each visit I felt more a part of the community.
