2 . Have you ever heard such kind of complaint from the parents that the child is so secretive and never tells them anything? But they seldom realize that they have brought this on themselves.

Parents are often upset when their children praise the homes of their friends and regard it as an evil speaking on their own cooking, or cleaning, or furniture, and often are foolish enough to let the adolescents see that they are annoyed. They may even accuse them of disloyalty, or make some spiteful remark about the friends’ parents. Such a loss of dignity and descent into childish behavior on the part of the adults deeply shocks the adolescents, and makes them decide that in future they will not talk to their parents about the place or people they visit.

Disillusionment(幻灭) with the parents, however good and adequate they may be both as parents and as individuals, is to some degree unavoidable. Most children have such a high ideal of their parents, unless the parents themselves have been unsatisfactory, that it can, hardly hope to stand up to a realistic evaluation. Parents would be greatly surprised and deeply touched if they realized how much belief their children usually have in their character and ability with no fault, and how much this faith means to a child. If parents were prepared for this adolescent reaction, and realized that it was a sign that the child was growing up and developing valuable powers of observation and independent judgment they would not be so hurt, and therefore would not drive the child into opposition by hating and resisting it.

The adolescent, with his passion for sincerity, always respects a parent who admits that he is wrong, or ignorant, or even that he has been unfair or unjust.

Parents in Victorian times believed that they kept their dignity by holding an unreasonable authoritarian attitude. The adolescent at that time tended to go to the other extreme though today we will bravely respond to the parents in some way. On the whole this is a healthier attitude both for the child and the parent. It is always wiser and safer to face up to reality, however painful it may be at the moment.

1. When adolescents feel disillusionment with their parents, it means they ________.
A.are developing into maturity
B.just want to hurt their parents
C.are expressing their dissatisfaction
D.feel disappointed with their parents
2. Adolescents in Victorian times ________.
A.showed more respect for parents than today
B.always answered back to deal with the problem
C.admired the authoritarian attitude of their parents
D.were too afraid to tell what they really thought
3. What is the tone of the passage?
A.Humorous.B.optimistic.
C.Serious.D.Uncertain.
4. What does this passage mainly discuss?
A.Children will become more and more mature when growing up.
B.Parents have to change their ways in educating their children.
C.The conflicts between parents and their children are unavoidable.
D.Parents have made mistakes in communication with children.

3 . One would have to be a fool to overlook the importance of using positive thinking for you rather than snowing negative thinking to work against you. In recent years, research in psychopharmacology (精神药理学) has proved what many people have known over the centuries: a positive attitude is good for you, good for your health, good for your wealth, good for everything.

Researchers have found that a positive attitude produces a specific chemical reaction which makes people feel better, while negative thinking results in a reduction of hormone (荷尔蒙) and shuts down the immune system. This leads to illness and depression. Positive thoughts will make you feel better. Even if you must begin by forcing yourself to be positive, it will become contagious and the positive thoughts will produce nice little chemicals and good feelings which will strengthen the positive thoughts.

For example, if you force yourself to smile or laugh, even when you "don't feel like smiling or laughing, if you keep at it for a few minutes, you will soon feel like it. Feelings can make thoughts alive, and thoughts can do it, too. Control your thoughts and you can control your feelings. Positive thinking is important in all aspects of our lives. There is probably no single factor more important in determining your success in achieving your career purposes than your own attitude.

It's often been said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. And in the office of militant (好战的) negativism, the positive workers shine like gold. You cannot control external events, but you can learn to control your reaction to those events and thereby have a positive attitude and be happy. This important key to success is totally within your control. Use it.

1. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.positive thinking can cure you of your diseases
B.positive thinking can easily be created by anyone
C.a reduction of hormone may cause you to be depressed
D.a specific chemical reaction is the cause of negative thinking
2. According to the passage, which of the following is true?
A.Feeling and thoughts can react to each other.
B.It's easier to control thoughts than to control feelings.
C.Your success depends wholly on your attitude.
D.Keeping smiling will surely make you successful.
3. Just like a one-eyed man in the land of the blind, you should ________.
A.take positive attitude in the office of militant negativism
B.be kind in your office
C.pay no attention to what is going on around you
D.control your feeling to what is happening to you
4. The best title to the passage is ________.
A.Thinking Benefits People
B.Why Should People Think
C.Positive Thinking and Negative Thinking
D.Thinking: The Important Way

5 . A team of scientists and entrepreneurs has announced a plan to bring back the woolly mammoth (猛犸象) — in the form of an elephant-mammoth hybrid (杂交动物) — within just six years. Texan technology entrepreneur Ben Lamm, and George Church, a biologist from Harvard Medical School, have set up Colossal, a new company that wants to bring several extinct species back to life — starting with the woolly mammoth, the last of which died around 4,000 years ago.

Church and Lamm believe an elephant-mammoth hybrid could help restore the Arctic tundra and slow climate change. The animals could do this by knocking down thin, low-oxygen trees, allowing the growth of grasslands that would trap carbon and reflect sunlight, keeping the ground cool.

To create the new elephant-mammoth hybrid, the team hopes to edit the embryo (胚胎) of an Asian elephant to carry mammoth-like DNA. Another possible plan involves taking skin cells from elephants and turning them into stem cells with mammoth DNA, which could then be developed into an embryo in the lab. The embryo would then be placed into a female elephant or an artificial womb.

"Our goal is to make a cold-resistant elephant, but it is going to look and behave like a mammoth," Church told The Guardian.

However, while similar techniques have been used with pigs and sheep, they have never been used with elephants, much less woolly mammoths. And even if the team succeeds, many experts are skeptical about their objectives. Victoria Herridge of the Natural History Museum in London told The Guardian that trying to improve the Arctic environment using a herd of mammoths isn't realistic."The scale at which you'd have to do this experiment is enormous. You are talking about hundreds of thousands of mammoths," she said. Gareth Phoenix from the University of Sheffield also said that trees and moss protect permafrost (永冻土层), so if they are destroyed by mammoths, it would have the opposite of the desired effect.

1. What is the purpose of bringing woolly mammoth back to life?
A.To restore the environment.
B.To save endangered animals.
C.To increase wildlife species.
D.To change the climate.
2. What will the scientists do to create the new hybrid?
A.They will make an elephant carry mammoth DNA.
B.They will take DNA from the stem cells of a mammoth.
C.They will change an elephant embryo with mammoth DNA.
D.They will preserve the DNA of an elephant and a mammoth.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The intention of bringing the mammoth back to life is challenged.
B.The conditions of bringing the mammoth back to life are not good.
C.It is impossible to bring the mammoth back to life in 6 years.
D.It is dangerous to bring the mammoth back to life.
4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Culture and Entertainment.B.Language and Education.
C.Economy and Business.D.Science and Technology.

6 . When Ada Lovelace walked into a party in 1833, she probably had no idea that a chance meeting there would influence her life in such a drastic way.

Lovelace was 17 at the time. She was intelligent, well educated, and fascinated with mathematics and foreign languages. Interestingly, Lovelace was the daughter of the Romantic poet Lord Byron, but she never really knew him. In an effort to make Lovelace less like her father, her mother encouraged her daughter to study science and math, not literature—and especially not poetry. With the help of her tutor, Lovelace’s intellect in mathematical theory flourished.

So when introduced by a mutual friend at the party to Charles Babbage (a leading mathematician of the day), Lovelace was able to talk with him on equal terms. Charles was struck by Lovelace’s knowledge and interest.

At the time of the party, Ada Lovelace was especially interested in one of Charles’s inventions: the difference machine, which was created to perform basic mathematical calculations. Up until this point, all math problems had always been solved by hand. The difference machine meant that some calculations could be automated.

Later, in 1843, Charles needed help. An engineer from Italy had written an article about Charles’s latest invention, the Analytical Engine. Who could both understand a complex article containing advanced mathematics and translate it from Italian into English? Ada Lovelace! This opportunity enabled her to show her academic talent for mathematics. Lovelace didn’t just translate the article — she came up with many of her own ideas about how the machine could be adapted to solve even more complex equations. Her notes were the first time that steps to solve certain equations had ever been written down. In other words, Ada Lovelace wrote the very first computer program! Her notes helped clarify for others how to approach difficult mathematical concepts.

Today we depend on computers to accurately make thousands of calculations per second. Lovelace’s pioneering work in mathematics and computer programming transformed the world. Without her contributions or her chance encounter with Charles Babbage, we might still be doing extremely complex mathematical calculations with a pencil and paper!

1. What does the underlined word “drastic” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Desperate.B.Additional.C.Powerful.D.Instant.
2. What in her early life significantly influenced Ada Lovelace’s achievement ?
A.Her education was focused on science and math.

C.Charles Babbage was impressed by her.
D.She never really knew her father.
3. What did Charles Babbage’s difference machine make easier?
A.Solving math problems.B.Recording conversations.
C.Creating computer programs.D.Translating text into other languages.
4. How did Ada Lovelace contribute to computer programming?
A.By translating an Italian article into English.
B.By solving more complex math problems.
C.By writing the first computer programme.
D.By working with Charles Babbage.

8 . I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me. I remember that I could not bear the thought of never hearing again the radio program for school children to which I listened every morning.

I do not remember myself crying for this reason again. In fact, I think I cried very little when I was saying goodbye to my friends and relatives. When we were leaving I thought about all the places I was going to see—the strange and magical places I had known only from books and pictures. The country I was leaving and never to come back was hardly in my head then.

The four years that followed taught me the importance of optimism(乐观), but the idea did not come to me at once. For the first two years in New York I was really lost—having to study in three schools as a result of family moves. I did not quite know what I was or what I should be. Mother remarried, and things became even more complex for me. Some time passed before my stepfather(继父)and I got used to each other. I was often sad, and saw no end to “the hard times.”

My responsibilities in the family increased a lot since I knew English better than everyone else at home. I wrote letters, filled out forms, translated at interviews with immigration officers(移民局官员), took my grandparents to the doctor and translated there, and even discussed telephone bills with company representatives.

From my experiences I have learned one important rule: Almost all common troubles go away at last! Something good is certain to happen in the end when you do not give up, and just wait a little! I believe that my life will turn out all right, even though it will not be that easy.

1. How did the author get to know America?
A.From radio programsB.From books and pictures
C.From her motherD.From her relatives
2. For the first two years in New York, the author ________.
A.often lost her wayB.did not think about her future
C.studied in three different schoolsD.got on well with her stepfather
3. What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 4?
A.She worked as a translator.B.She attended a lot of job interviews.
C.She paid telephone bills for her family.D.She helped her family with her English.
4. The author believes that ________.
A.her future will be free from troublesB.it is difficult to learn to become patient
C.there are more good things than bad thingsD.good things will happen if one keeps trying

9 . Imagine the feeling of swinging at a baseball going 100 miles per hour—without leaving your living room, or being in race car as it roars down the track, while you are sitting on the couch.

These are just some of the ways that sports business leaders say virtual reality (VR) will revolutionize how people train for and experience sports. Virtual and augmented(增强的)realities are together known as mixed reality (MR). “American footballers are already using VR to better train their minds and read the field,” Ludden said. “This can allow players to perfect their skills without risking injury.”

Canadian company D-BOX Technologies designs and produces moving seats found in cinema and theme parks. It is now moving into sports, and shows its Formula One (F1) racing simulator (模拟器). The seats stimulate the force of gravity, speed and every shaking as Fl champion Lewis Hamilton zips around city streets.

A simulation seat uses pre-programed data now. Someday, though, it could use real-time information sent by the car. “They could broadcast live content through a network in pop-up theaters around the world,” Ludden said. Say you want to experience the true stress of a batter being up against major-league baseball pitcher. “You can have a heartbeat added to the sensation on the seat and then you can feel it, boom, boom,” Maheu explained. “When he swings and hits the ball, you can have an impact.”

One day, fans around the world could physically experience every game from their favorite player in real time. Ludden said that current and near-future technology could create “augmented stadiums” for live audiences. Panasonic launched its “Smart Venue” plans which included the overlaying of graphics, advertisements, player statistics and replays on the field of play at a pro football game. “If you are seated in the cheap seats, you can see this really useful.” “Fans may someday join in stadium wide games, using the field as a virtual gaming platform,” Ludden added.

1. What does the underlined phrase “read the field” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Get off the playing field.B.Build up a football court.
C.Judge the situation on the field.D.Ask players to play on the spot.
2. What does Maheu think audiences can do in the future baseball game?
A.Enjoy live content in any theater.
B.Program the simulation seats in advance.
C.Control the force and speed of the baseball.
D.Experience the real time game with the player.
3. What does Ludden mainly describe in the last paragraph?
A.The origin of VR.B.A future stadium.
C.An advertisement platform.D.The expectations of audiences.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.VR can improve players' skills for sports.
B.VR increases fans' joy in the baseball game.
C.VR can improve sports experience for players and fans.
D.VR promises a new future for football players and games.
