5 . The Australian Outback town of Quilpie is home to 800 people. The town hoped its offer of free land might draw five new families to the community. In less than two weeks, the town has received more than 250 requests for information about the offer from around Australia and other countries around the world. The town leaders came up with the idea to deal with a housing shortage. The lack of housing made it difficult to fill jobs in the remote area of western Queensland state. People who buy land, build a house on it for less than 560,000 dollars, and live in it for six months can receive a 9,400 dollars payment, known as a grant. A block of land in Quilpie, about 1,000-square meters, sells for around the same amount as the grant. It means the town is effectively giving the land away.
The idea for the grant offer came from Justin Hancock, head of the town council. The 30-year-old spent six months in a retirement (退休) home when he first arrived in Quilpie this year because of the area’s housing shortage. Quilpie has recently needed workers in healthcare and education. It also needs people who can fix cars and prepare meat and many other kinds of workers. Questions about the free land program came from as far away as Britain, India, and New Zealand. But home buyers need to be Australian citizens or permanent (永久) residents to be a candidate for the grant.
Hancock said recently that getting five new families to the area would be a big success. “To see the interest,” he added, “it was a little overwhelming (难以处理的事情).” Real estate prices have increased greatly across much of Australia throughout the coronavirus crisis. Lockdowns in the largest cities, Sydney and Melbourne, and low interest rates have sent people to search for larger homes in smaller towns. Most of the interest in coronavirus-free Quilpie has come from the state capital, Brisbane, a city of 2.4 million on the Pacific Ocean 1,000 kilometers to the east. But there is also interest from Melbourne, Newcastle, and Western Australia state. Both young families and retired people are considering the Quilpie move. They have different reasons. “People who are coming out of lockdown (锁定) are saying I want wide open spaces, and we have plenty of that,” Hancock said.
The area that Quilpie is in, known as a shire, covers 68,000 square kilometers. Two grants will be received by Quilpie locals, one by council employee Tom Hennessy, 23, and his 24-year-old school teacher fiancee (未婚妻), Tessa McDougall. The couple bought a block of land in August. “I love Quilpie. It’s a great place. Everyone’s friendly,” Hennessy said. Hennessy was born in Quilpie and his fiancee came a year ago from Brisbane.

7 . The world’s largest radio telescope was finished on Sep. 25, 2017 in China.
FAST is a five-hundred-meter telescope. It is also called Tian-yan (“The Eye of Heaven”), with a dish the size of 30 football grounds, deep in the mountains of southwest China’s Guizhou Province. The giant dish is built on a howl-like valley.
The surrounding area has “radio silence” as there are no towns and cities within a 5-kilometer radius (半径范围) and only one county center within 25 kilometers.
FAST is made up of 4, 450 panels (面板). The second largest radio telescope is in Russia. The bigger dish will be able to pick up weaker signals (信号).
The radio telescope is like an ear, listening to tell meaningful radio messages from white noise in the universe. With the help of the telescope, we can receive weaker and more radio messages far away in space. It will help us to search for intelligent life outside of the Galaxy (银河系) and explore the origins (起源) of the universe. “Any of its discoveries will lead to a Nobel Prize, ” said Joseph Taylor, a Noble Prize winner.
The FAST project began in 2011. And the telescope is expected to remain the global leader for the next 10 to 20 years.

8 . A table-waiting robot cat built by a Chinese technology firm can carry plates of food, show customers around a restaurant, miaow at diners and even react to having its ears touched.
Making its first appearance at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the so-called BellaBot was built for Chinese restaurants lacking enough waiters.
It has four shelves in the centre of its tower-like body to carry plates. Having been loaded up with meals by its human workmates, BellaBot miaows when it delivers food to diners to encourage them to take their plates. If customers thank BellaBot by touching its ears, it will respond with a look of pleasure on its screen, which displays(展示)animations of a cat’s face.
“The owner’s hand is so warm, ”BellaBot has been programmed to respond.
However, much like a real cat, the robot’s reaction soon changes if it is petted for too long.
“It gets mad to remind you not to interrupt its job, ”the designers introduced.
In a real-world food-service setting, however, BellaBot may find it difficult to operate at the busiest times. Anyway, restaurants are expected to increase their relying on automatons(小型机器人)—whether in the form of robotic waiting staff or not.
Furthermore, improvements in technology will see consumer robot designs grow steadily better at communicating with humans and dealing with new activities.

However, Wang and her parents have stayed positive throughout. Since childhood, Wang’s parents have been telling her to regard herself as a normal person even if she is physically disabled.
She practiced performing daily activities repeatedly. With her parents’ help, she learned to live with her physical disability and aimed to be an outstanding writer. Before the age of 17, Wang completed nine years of compulsory education and acquired much literary knowledge. With the encouragement of her teacher, she became more determined to pursue her dream of writing.
Literature has become a medium for her to communicate with the world. Sitting in a wheelchair, Wang pursues her dream in her own way. Though she only has one movable finger on her right hand, she has managed to write eight books with a total of more than a million words. “For me, writing is not a tool to make a living, but my necessary life mode. Only when I am involved in writing can I feel complete,” she stressed.
Wang hopes that every disabled person can live without discrimination. “What I value most is the sense of value and dignity from the efforts of the disabled themselves, as well as from social recognition, acceptance and equal treatment.” She also hopes that readers can experience the strength of life, the warmth of family and the beauty of the times when they are reading her works.

10 . The Chongyang Festival falls on the 9th day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, so it is also known as the Double Ninth Festival.
The festival is held in the golden season of autumn, at harvest-time. The bright clear weather and the joy of bringing in the harvest make for a festival happy atmosphere. The Chongyang Festival is usually perfect for outdoor activities. Climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood (茱萸) and drinking chrysanthemum (菊花) wine have become the traditional activities of the festival.
The dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance(香气), and is often used as a Chinese herbal medicine. People in ancient times believed it could drive away evil spirits and prevent one from getting a chill (寒意) in late autumn. So its history as a medicine goes back many centuries. But the custom of carrying a spray of dogwood during the Double Ninth Festival is slowly dying out and many people in the cities do not even know what a dogwood spray looks like.
Early in Han Dynasty, about 2000 years ago, people used to climb a high platform outside the capital city of Chang’ an on the occasion of the Chongyang Festival. For many, it was the last outing of the year before the onset of winter. The custom evolved (发展成) into present form, when people go climbing to get some exercises as well as enjoy the autumn scenery.
But what about those people who live in plains far from any mountain? The problem is solved by going for a picnic and eating cakes. The Chinese word for “cake” is “Gao”, a homonym (同音异义词) of the Chinese word for “high”. Mountains are high, so eating cakes can, by a stretch of the imagination, take the place of going for a climb.
1. Why do people carry a spray of dogwood on Chongyang Festival?A.Because the dogwood is a plant with a strong fragrance. |
