文章大意:本文是说明文,文章介绍了如何确保你旅途愉快的几个步骤。

1 . How to Make Sure You Enjoy Your Trip

A trip is a planned destination where one arranges in advance in which the main purpose is to search for adventure and to create a memorable moment.     1

●Plan it well. Trips are ideally planned for them to go well. Take your time, a day or a week ahead to make a plan for your trip. A check list is helpful, making sure you’ve got all your needs.

●Pack necessities. Bring what you need. Trips are short journeys and belong to the sub-level of traveling. Pack only the things you need.     2

●Be safe. To be cautious is smart. No matter what you are up to, surfing, cliff diving, snow-boarding, scuba diving..., it is always recommended to be safe.     3     Don’t be stubborn and put yourself in harm when there are precautions.

4     You may see delays, a different culture, lifestyle, food, and even a shortage of cash sometimes—these are all what travel is about—experiencing things with a new perspective (视角). Once you expect to experience new things, you'll be a happy traveler and free from stress.

●Save the memory.     5     This is not one of those regular days so you ought to save the moment. It will make your trip more enjoyable after all that craziness; you get something to review the good times.

A.Go with your friend.
B.Travel with an open mind.
C.Get prepared for everything new.
D.Seize the moment by taking pictures.
E.It is important to wear protective equipment when advisable.
F.Here are the steps on how to make sure your trip is enjoyable.
G.It is easy to get tired if you have too many things in your package.

2 . It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned. Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners, why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say, they hear only what the speaker does say. If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no one will be any the wiser. When such moments occur, don’t worry about them. Just continue as if nothing happened.

Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech — “I have a dream”, you may notice that he stumbles over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making. People care a lot about making mistakes in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly. Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.

As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect. Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.

1. You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ________.
A.you find the way of speech-making more important
B.you don’t fully understand the speech
C.you attention is on the content
D.you don’t know what the speaker plans to say
2. What does the underlined phrase “stumbles over” in Paragraph 2?
A.Walks wrongly.B.Makes an error with.
C.Misunderstands.D.Forgets.
3. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
B.giving a speech is like giving a performance
C.the listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D.the more mistake a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
4. Which of the following statements is true?
A.If you are careful enough, you can make a perfect speech.
B.Listeners are not judges and they pay more attention to the message.
C.Speech-making is a kind of performance.

4 . One of the pleasant things about having an apartment is having neighbors. You may develop personal friendships with some of your neighbors. There may also be times when you have a conflict(冲突)with your neighbors. There may be neighbors you just don't get along with at all. So how can you get along well with your neighbors?

Your neighbors have the right to maintain their living space as you do. Your neighbors have their own lifestyle and their own responsibilities. When you first move into an apartment, show respect for your neighbors. If you see them outside, say "hello". Introduce yourself to them and tell them you just moved in. Be pleasant. Early conflict with neighbors can cause you a bad reputation(名声).You should avoid that. Don't turn up your radio loud. Don't speed up your car on the streets of the neighborhood.

If your neighbors or your landlord(房东)feels that you are causing a problem at any point, be-have responsibly. It is not fun to suddenly be blamed for something, and it is easy to get defensive if this occurs. However, you need to accept that something you are doing has dissatisfied either your neighbors or your landlord or both of them. Listen to their stories carefully. Try to imagine yourself in their situation. Apologize for the problem you have caused.

If you feel your neighbors are causing a disturbance, be dispassionate. For example, suppose that it's two o'clock in the morning and you are awakened by loud noise from neighbors who are having a party, what will you do?This is annoying. You need to recognize that this is the first time that such kind of thing has happened. Recognize that your neighbors are human beings that make mistakes. Realize that there is time to resolve your discomfort with your neighbors. With cool heads, proper communication, patience, and consideration, you can solve this problem with your neighbors.

1. Paragraph 2 mainly suggests that we should be _________
A.careful and calmB.friendly and considerate
C.kind-hearted and patientD.responsible and easy-going
2. How should you react if your neighbors blame you for something?
A.Be defensive.B.Don't take it seriously.
C.Ask the landlord for help.D.Listen and try to be responsible.
3. The last paragraph mainly tells us what to do when _________
A.neighbors try to anger usB.we are blamed for something
C.neighbors cause a disturbanceD.w e are woken up by neighbors
4. What does the underlined word "dispassionate" in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Calm.B.Concerned.C.Relaxed.D.Curious.

5 . Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January,1942.He went to school in St. Albans-a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. As he later wrote, “Before my illness had been diagnosed(诊断),there had not seemed to be anything worth doing. He also went to do some of the most important scientific research ever carried out.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了我们日常生活中的食物浪费现象以及华盛顿DC中央厨房的首席执行官科廷为解决食物浪费而采取的努力。

7 . Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula (芝麻菜)was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.

In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away — from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.

Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”

If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time — but for him, it's more like 12 bones of donated strawberries nearing their last days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.

Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.

1. What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?
A.We pay little attention to food waste.B.We waste food unintentionally at times.
C.We waste more vegetables than meat.D.We have good reasons for wasting food.
2. What is a consequence of food waste according to the test?
A.Moral decline.B.Environmental harm.
C.Energy shortage.D.Worldwide starvation.
3. What does Curtin’s company do?
A.It produces kitchen equipment.B.It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.
C.It helps local farmers grow fruits.D.It makes meals out of unwanted food.
4. What does Curtin suggest people do?
A.Buy only what is needed.B.Reduce food consumption.
C.Go shopping once a week.D.Eat in restaurants less often.

8 . The morning had been a disaster. My tooth was aching, and I’d been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt, “ The trouble with you is that you won’t put yourself in my place. Can’t you see things from my point of view? ” I shook my head stubbornly-and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.

“ If you come by right now, ” the receptionist said, “ the dentist will fit you in. ”

I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?

In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my icecold one.

When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “ Don’t worry. The dentist is very good. ”

“ How long do I have to wait for him? ” I asked impatiently.

“ Come on, he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork, ” the assistant said.

“ The artwork? ”I was puzzled.

The chair went back. Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.

What a relief!

A.Strike while the iron is hot.B.Put oneself in other’s shoes.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述闲聊的作用。

10 . Small talk. Chitchat. These are the short conversations we have at parties, while we wait in line at the store, at family events or work.     1     Often we have to make small talk with complete strangers.

Many people find these small conversations about random topics difficult. Some people say they hate it.     2    They may even call it idle chitchat or idle chatter, meaning it doesn't do anything. They consider small talk not important.

3     These exchanges can open doors that may lead to larger, more meaningful conversations. When you first meet someone or talk to someone you don't know well, it would be awkward to begin a conversation about a really deep topic such as war, politics or the meaning of life. Small talk also gives you the chance to decide if you want to know that person better-or not. Let's say you make small talk with someone at a party.     4    You may not want to build a friendship with them unless you really, really love cats.

Chitchat can also increase your feeling of understanding, or empathy, toward people you know but not well. Chatting with a colleague about their child may help you to understand more of their life outside the office.     5

A.However, small talk is important.
B.And small talk may make us happier.
C.But they only want to talk about cats.
D.Others say small talk is a waste of time.
E.This could help build healthy work relationships.
F.However, some people are not good at small talk.
G.Sometimes we make small talk with people we already know but not well.
