Luckin Coffee Stock Collapses After News of Fake Data

The fast-growing Chinese coffee chain has suspended its chief operating officer Liu Jian and staff reporting to him.The decision came     1     the company's special committee conducted an internal investigation into issues in its financial statements for 2021.

Luckin Coffee, which has been described as a challenger to Starbucks, was one of China's few successful U.S. stock market listing last year. Founded in 2017,it was listed on the NASDAQ last May.It had set up some 4,500 stores in more than 40 cities across China by the end of 2019. Most of these stores are small "pick-up"stations     2     (locate) in office buildings or on college campuses that cater to online orders for pickup and delivery.

The Xiamen-based company said its own investigation had found that its fabricated sales figures,     3     had been reported starting from the second quarter of last year to the fourth quarter,     4     (amount) to about 22 billion yuan ($310 million). That's equal to about 40% of its estimated annual sales.

Luckin also said that it still needed to look into other costs and expenses that were considerably inflated during the same period. The company added that it is assessing the overall financial impact of the misconduct on its financial statements. At the same time, Luckin warned investors that they     5     no longer rely on its financial statements and earning releases for the nine months leading up to Sept. 30, which had indicated rapid growth. Its U.S.stock market value     6     (triple) since its IPO, topping S59 a share earlier this year. How to Sell Books in 2020: Put Them Near the Toilet Paper

If you want to sell books during a pandemic, it turns out that one of the best places to do it is within easy reach of eggs, milk and diapers.

When the coronavirus forced the United States into lockdown this spring, stores like Walmart and Target, which     1    (think) essential, remained open. So when anxious consumers were stocking up on beans and pasta, they were also grabbing workbooks, paperbacks and novels,     2     (push) the book sales up to a new level.

Warehouse stores do not generally reveal how much they sell of particular products, but people across the publishing industry say that sales     3     (increase) at these stores significantly, with perhaps the greatest rise at Target. In some cases, according to publishing executives, books sales tripled or quadrupled.

Some grocery chains and pharmacies saw an increase, too, even     4     books are far from the core of what they offer.

Stores like Target,     5    had the advantage of being open, were also able to step in when Amazon pulled back on delivering some products, like books and toys, so it     6    prioritize essential household goods and medical supplies.

“Covid-19 and the government stimulus check have increased the demand     7     books in a big way, particularly on the adult books side,” Leigh Stidham, a Walmart spokeswoman, said in an email. The fiction genre is strong despite some new title releases being pushed back to later in the year. Also, educational book sales have increased significantly since day cares and schools have been shut down.

The question for publishers is     8    this rise will continue. Have buyers been reconditioned to pick up books in different places, or will they go back to their old habits when running errands feels     9     (anxious)? Mr. Abboud of ReaderLink said the sales were expected     10    (fall), but not to previous levels. In the meantime, there are those who are starting to venture back out.

Previously, cross-cultural marriage were not accepted. However, most people now get married out of love for one another, not because of one’s race. Cross-cultural marriages, therefore,     1     (become) increasingly popular among the younger generations.

2     (enter) into a relationship with someone from another country can have a lot of ups and downs. The differences between the two cultures come into play as the relationship     3    (progress). Couples may have problems     4    (get) used to each other’s living style. It is important for the couples to see their partners as who they are, not     7     (base)on some common understanding of a culture.

A web-based survey conducted by Divorcees Club found that many of its members had been in unhappy cross-cultural marriages: Loneliness, custom differences and adapting to a new lifestyle were quoted as the main reasons. Most studies conducted on interracial marriages conclude     9    who are the same race tend to form a solid marriage. However, the results of some studies led to the opinion that factors like the age of marriage and educational qualifications had a greater bearing on the stability and longevity of such marriages     10     the racial identities of the individuals.

Walmart has a plan to tackle the climate crisis. Can it pull it off?

Every day a seemingly never-ending stream of toothbrushes, toilet paper, tape, thumbtacks, toys and     1       products criss-cross the globe from a network of suppliers to Walmart's more than 10,500 stores.

The retailer, which was for many years     2     (big) in the world until Amazon took

3     crown in August, has a supply chain almost unfathomably complex. And it comes with a huge carbon-footprint. In 2019 the company emitted 17.56m metric tons of greenhouse gases.

Walmart has declared its mission     4     (tackle) these climate impacts, which means focusing on every part of the chain-from the electricity sourced in its stores to the palm oil in the candy bars sold on its shelves. But     5     some experts celebrate the scale of the retailer's efforts, others wonder whether they go far enough.

Over the past years, Walmart     6     (come) out with a slew of climate promises. In 2017, it launched "Project Gigaton", pledging to cut 1bn metric tons of carbon emissions from its supply chain by 2030. Last year it announced a goal to reach zero emissions from its global operations by 2040 without relying on carbon offsets - where companies "cancel out" some of their impact by funding projects that reduce carbon emissions. It's also promised to be a 100% renewably-powered, zero waste and "regenerative" corporation that does more good than harm.

"It's extraordinary," said Michael Vandenbergh, co-director of the Climate Change Research Network at Vanderbilt Law School,     7     we're talking about is one of the largest and most conservative companies in the world     8    (make) a range of commitments     9       government is not requiring them to make."

Yet it's an uphill task for a retail giant with a business model based on providing tens of millions of low-priced products to a growing number of customers. The big question will be     10     this type of business model can persist in a way that aligns with climate science, said Simon Fischweicher, head of corporations and supply chains for environmental nonprofit CDP North America.

In the presence of animals

A professor of public health at UCLA says that pet ownership might provide a new form of health care. As far back as the 1790s, the elderly at a senior citizens’ home in England     1     (encourage) to spend time with farm animals. This would help patients’ mental state more than the cruel therapies     2     (use) on the mentally ill at the time. In recent years, scientists have finally begun to find proofs     3     contact with animals increases a sick person’s chance of survival, and has been shown     4     (lower) heart rate, calms upset children, and gets people to start a conversation.

Scientists think that animals’ companionship is beneficial     5     animals are accepting and attentive, and they don’t criticize or give orders. Animals have the unique ability to be more social. For example, visitors to nursing homes get more social responses from patients when they come with animal companions.

Not only do people seem     6     (anxious) when animals are nearby, but they may also live longer. Studies show that a year     7     heart surgery, survival rates for heart patients were higher for those with pets in their homes than those without pets. Elderly people with pets make fewer trips to doctors than those without animal companions, possibly because animals relieve loneliness. Staying with animals is believed to create a peaceful state of mind,     8     (result) in a favorable environment for everyone.

Research confirms that the findings concerning senior citizens can be applied to restless children. They are more easy-going when there are animals around, with     9     company they tend to calm down more easily. They involve    10     in playing with animals and the presence of animals comforts them greatly.

Craftsmen enjoy their brush with success

NANCHANG — Zhou Pengcheng, 76, has dedicated his life       1     the centuries-old intangible cultural heritage of making writing brushes.

Zhou, who hails from Wengang township in East China's Jiangxi province, has been engaged in this ancient handicraft for more than six decades.

Wengang's long-standing tryst with brush pens dates back to 1979. Over the decades, the town has grown into one of the country's biggest brush-pen markets,     2     (attract) tens of thousands of buyers from across China.

In Chinese culture, writing brushes     3     (count) among the "four treasures of study", and Wengang is known as the "hometown of China's writing brush".

More than 400 brush-making enterprises and over 2,200 brush workshops are located in     4     township. And almost every family in the town makes     5     living through the brush manufacturing industry.

Zhou     6     (work) in the sector since he was 8 years old. "In the 1970s, writing brushes made in Jiangxi were not so well recognized by people in China and the rest of the world,     7     spurred me on to improve and adjust brush-making techniques according to the needs of customers," says Zhou, adding that he finally succeeded after about eight years of hard work.

The craft of making writing brushes in Wengang involves 128 steps. The local brushes have proved popular in overseas markets, such as Asia, Europe, and the United States, and particularly in Japan and the Republic of Korea.

"I found calligraphy     8     (fascinate), especially the power and visual impact of Chinese calligraphy," says Alister Inglis, professor of Chinese language and literature at Simmons University. The foreign teacher takes an interest in     9     the shape, length and bristles of the brush reflect the type of written characters.

In June, Wengang's brush-making skills were listed as a national intangible cultural heritage, says Wu Shaoyun, Party chief of the town.

"Since the beginning of this year, we have mainly focused on how     10     (transform) the brush-making industry into a cultural industry. We have been working hard to improve the techniques and further inherit this craft," says Wu.

Currently, the town is eyeing a new boom in the digital era. It has launched tailored services to better meet customer needs in areas of culture, tourism and e-commeice.

What should you take in with you     1     you take an exam? Pen, pencil, eraser, ruler ..., and don't forget a bottle of water!

According to a study at the British Psychological Society Annual Conference held in London,     2     (bring) water into exams may help students improve their grades by up to 10 percent.

Scientists at the University of East London and the University of Westminster, UK, did a study on 447 students. The students     3     (study) for different degrees(学位)at the University of East London at that time. Only 25 percent of them entered the exam hall with something to drink.

Scientists then compared their exam results     4     their normal schoolwork grades. They found that those who     5     (bring) drinks with them got better grades     6     between 2 and 10 percent.

It is unclear why drinking water improves exam results,     7     scientists say having enough water in our bodies and not feeling thirsty could have a helpful effect on our brains. Drinking water may also cut down on anxiety, which has a good effect on exam performances, according to Chris Pawson, PhD, of the university of East London. "Whatever the explanation is,     8     is clear that students should try hard to stay hydrated(含水的)with water during exams," he said.

So next time, when you are going to have a big exam,     9     (try) bringing a bottle of water with you. Who knows -- it     10     help you pass the exam!

How TV impacts children

Dr. Heinrich Applebaum recently completed a study on the effects of television on children. In his case, though, he wasn’t concerned     1     violence , but how television gives children a false sense of reality.

Dr. Applebaum told me,“One of       2     (great) dangers of television is that it presents a world to children that doesn’t exist, and raises expectations that can never be fulfilled. ” “ I don’t understand, Doctor, ”I said. “Well, let me cite one example. Have you ever seen a television show       3       a person in an automobile doesn’t immediately find a parking2 place on the very first try?” “Come to think of it, ”I said,“I haven’t. ”

“Not only is there always a parking spot available but the driver doesn’t even have to back into it. There are two parking spaces available       4       someone in a TV show needs one . Children     5     (lead) to believe that when they grow up they will always be able to find a parking place when and where they want it.     6     you discover in real life is that you can drive around a block for three hours and still not find a place to put your car?”

“ I never thought of it but it’s true . What else do they show on television which gives a       7     (distort) picture of the real world?” “Have you noticed that whenever a character walks out of a restaurant or office building or apartment and says to the doorman,‘Get me a taxi, ’the taxi immediately arrives? Millions of children are under the impression5 that all a doorman has to do is blow his whistle and a taxi will be there. I have never seen a show where the doorman has said, ‘ I’m sorry. I can’t get you a taxi. You better take the bus. ’” “Of course , ”I said.“I never knew before what bothered me about those TV action programs, but now I do. There is always a yellow taxi waiting off screen. ” “Now, ”said Applebaum,“ have you ever said to a taxi driver,‘       8     (follow)   that car and don’t lose him’?”

“Not really. ” “Well, if you had, the driver would have told you to blow it out your ear. No taxi driver is in a mood     9     (do) because that means he ’s going to get involved.

But on TV every cabdriver looks as if he ’d like     10     better to do than to drive 90 miles an hour through a rain-swept street trying to keep up with a car full of hoods. And the worst thing is that the kids believe it. ”

Are you a moviegoer? If, like me, you're a fan of film, then there's no better place to watch something than on the big screen at the cinema. You enter the dark auditorium and take your seat, ready to    1    (entertain). But while you engross yourself in some movie magic, now many others are     2    (get) their film fix at home.

Over the last few years, cinemas     3    (see) a resurgence. Customers have been enticed by comfortable seats, and lots of choice of things to watch. Multiplexes in particular can screen up to twenty films at the same time,     4    (cater) for all different tastes. In addition, 3D and even 4D movies can give the audience an extra immersive experience. So, what's not to like about a trip to the cinema?

One answer to that question is convenience. Rather than     5    (go)out, it's so much easier to stay in and    6    (watch) a romcom or action movie on a high-definition TV screen via a streaming service such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. There's plenty of choice, and it's relatively cheap as well. But, personally, I find there are too many distractions, and watching at home is not such an event. I miss the trailers too!

But the coronavirus pandemic    7    (put) the future of cinemas under the spotlight. Some have had to close because of reduced ticket sales. And in the UK, it's brought about a surge in TV watching and online streaming, according to media watchdog, Ofcom. It also found that half of UK adults will keep and continue    8     (use) their new streaming subscriptions.

This isn't great news for cinemas. They rely on the release of a big blockbuster to bring the crowds back, but the launch of new films, such as James Bond: No Time To Die,    9    (delay). And Disney has released its $200m blockbuster, Mulan, online instead of in movie theatres. But John Fithian, from the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Variety magazine: “This idea of waiting out the pandemic to make your movies more profitable     10    ( make) sense to me. There won't be as much of an industry left to play your movies in if you do that.”

The first Black Woman in the Congress

Being the first black woman    1    (elect) to Congress has made me some kind of phenomenon. There are nine other blacks in Congress; there are ten other women. I was the first     2    (overcome) both handicaps(障碍)at once. Of the two handicaps,     3    (be)black is much less of a handicap than being female.

If I said that being black is a    4     (great)handicap than being woman, probably no one would question me. Why? Because "we all know" there is prejudice against black people in America. That there is prejudice against women is an idea    5    still strikes nearly all men-and, I am afraid, most women-as strange.

Prejudice against blacks was invisible to most white Americans for many years. When blacks finally started to "mention" it, with sit-ins and freedom rides, Americans could hardly believe it."Who, us?" they asked     6     injured tones. "We     7    (prejudice)?" It was the start of a long, painful reeducation for white America. It will take years for whites-including those     8    think of themselves as liberals-to discover and eliminate the racist attitudes they all actually have.

How much harder will it be to eliminate the prejudice against women? I am sure it will be a longer struggle. Part of the problem is     9    women in America are much more brainwashed and happy with    10    roles as second-class citizens than blacks ever before.
