1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

A couple, whom we shall call John and Mary, had a nice home and two lovely children. One day, John and Mary decided to go on a trip to another city, so they found a kind woman to look after the children and left.

Several days later, they returned home a little earlier than they had planned. As they drove back to their hometown, John and Mary noticed smoke and went to see what it was. They found a house was on fire.“Oh,well, it isn't our house. Let's go home,”Mary said.

But John drove closer and screamed in surprise,“That's Jordan's home. He works in a factory. He wouldn’t be off work yet. Maybe there is something we can do to help.”

“It has nothing to do with us,”cried Mary. “You have your good clothes on,so let's not get any closer.”

John didn't listen to Mary. He drove up and stopped. They were both shocked to see the whole house was on fire. A woman was crying in the yard, “The children! Get the children!”

John seized her by the shoulder and shouted to her, “Don't cry! Tell me where the children are!” “In the basement(地下室),”cried the woman,“down the hall and to the left.”

John used water to get his clothes wet and put a wet towel on his head before rushing to the basement. The house was full of smoke and fire, and it was very difficult for him to find the children. But he made it. He held one under each arm. As he left,he could hear some more crying. He took the two kids out of the house and into the fresh air,and then asked the women how many more children were still down there.

2 . 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was a few days before Christmas many years ago and it looked like it would not be a happy one for my family.

The factory that I was working at gave us a long holiday while their machinery was being repaired, that is to say, there is no need for us to go to work. In return for this, we didn't have much money.

My wife and I had managed to save some money to buy our young children some toys, but an unexpected car repair had taken most of our cash. We knew for sure that we could only afford to get one small gift for each of our children.

We arrived at the store and walked down the parking lot past people loading gifts into their cars. I saw the happiness on their faces and 1 heard them laughing and speaking happily. I envied them a bit, because it sure didn't feel like Christmas to me. We hurried into the store past old Tom, a beggar who had begged here for many years. To some extent, we had been "friends". I had always enjoyed putting something in his kettle before and he always held up his thumb to me. But today we passed him quickly with our heads down, pretending we didn't see him even though I heard clearly he was saying hello to me. I wasn't sure if I could afford gifts for my own family and I could not help others.

We searched all through the store hoping to find one thing each of our small children would like. Thankfully, we were able to get them each something sweet. We headed for the checkout and paid the bills for all the toys children selected. We found that we even had a few dollars left over.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

This past summer, I joined my sister's family for their annual Adirondack vacation in a rented cottage on a lake, the same place my family has stayed since I was a little kid. There are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy: swimming, fishing and sand castle building on the beach.

By the third day, I had noticed that my ten-year-old niece, Jannie, had spent most of her time watching cable TV and browsing through the gift shops in town. Not exactly the wilderness experience I remembered from my youth. So, at dinner, I told Jannie we should hike to the top of the mountain across the lake the following morning, which was called Rocky Point because the peak is bare and rock-covered.

"Well." replied Jannie, "Tomorrow there are some shows on the Disney Channel, so I'm going to be pretty busy."

"When your mother and I used to come here when we were your age, we were too busy swimming and hiking up mountains."

"Sounds more like punishment than a vacation." She shrugged her shoulders. "Besides, I don't think I can walk that far."

When I said it only took a half-hour of steady walking to get to the top. She grumbled, "Fine, I'll go." I knew she was agreeing just to shut me up, but I would take anything I could get.

The next morning was a perfect day for a hike, with sunshine and clear skies. I got up early and took some sandwiches and water bottles, which I tucked into my backpack along with the bug spray and the camera.

Jannie came shuffling downstairs, sighed dramatically, rolled her eyes and announced in a very unenthusiastic, robot-like voice. "I'm ready to go hiking, Uncle David." Anyway, we climbed into my car and drove to the trailhead about ten minutes away. As we stood at the edge of the parking lot and looked down the shaded trail that led into the woods. "I am still not sure this is a good idea, but if you and Mom could do it, I can too, I guess."

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Devi looked through the observation window at the kids below, all waiting in line to get into the pool. She turned to her mother with an angry look on her face. “Mom, they're all little kids! This is ridiculous!”

“I know, Devi,” replied her mother, “but you're a beginner, too, and you have to start somewhere!”

Devi had never been to a swimming lesson in her life. Between schoolwork and helping on her grandfather's farm, she hadn't had time for lessons. The closest Devi had been to a swimming pool was the inflatable (充气的) pool her mother bought her when she was five. Now that Devi was older, her mother had found a new job in the city, and Devi faced a new challenge—school field trips to the local pool.

The first day that Devi went with her class to the pool, she had no idea what she was in for. What could be so difficult about swimming? Devi confidently slipped into the water and held onto the side of the pool, expecting to be able to touch the bottom with her feet. But when Devi let go of the side of the pool, she slipped under the water—the whole pool was one big deep end! Devi moved her arm with a lot of force toward the side of the pool and grabbed the cement ledge(壁架), taking quick deep breaths with open mouth.

“I really can't swim! Everyone's going to laugh at me!” she thought to herself in a panic.

On the next field trip to the pool, Devi sat on the side on a bench, paralyzed with fear. She huddled(蜷缩) with a towel over her shoulders, too embarrassed to try again. When she came home, her mother noticed right away that Devi was upset. “Honey, I made a call to the local pool, and you start lessons this weekend, so you'll learn how to swim just like everyone else,” she told Devi confidently. Devi felt doubtful that lessons would help, but she had to overcome her fear.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文.

Oliver sat up in his sleeping bag, feeling glad. On a low-hanging branch a few yards away sat a great gray owl (猫头鹰)! Its face was so noticeable that he recognized it immediately. Great grays were rare and endangered, and he might never see one again. Oliver was still staring when he realized his dad was sitting up too. “See that?” His father nodded, a look of wonder on his face. “A great gray owl……I never thought I'd actually see one.”

In the morning, Oliver wandered around the campsite with his binoculars (望远镜). Then he saw a big nest in an Oregon ash. He climbed up the tree and looked inside—four smooth white eggs! He fished out an old digital camera and took a bunch of photos. Back at the campsite, he showed the photos to his dad, who agreed: owl eggs.

Then Dad handed him a cellphone, “Read the news.” Oliver read the headline: “New Shopping Mall Under Discussion.” The new mall would have Oliver's favorite sporting goods store. Sweet, But when he read its location, his smile faded. "That's right where we saw the owl. They can't do that!” Oliver said. “I don't think they should build that mall there.” He looked down at the news again. “On Tuesday there's a town council meeting to vote whether to build it there. Can I go?” “That's an excellent idea,” said his dad.

But when Oliver biked over to the meeting, no one took him seriously.

“That's nice that you're interested in birds,” said the town council president. “Why not write a paper for your science class?” The president was treating the 14-year-old like he was 5.

“I have photos of a nest,” Olive insisted. “With eggs in it. Owls are breeding (繁殖) in that area.”

The president glanced at the photos. “The date stamp on these says 200; that's 15 years ago!”

“How could that be? I just took them!” said Oliver. But he knew the camera was old. Something must have gone wrong with it.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.

He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.

I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.

The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

A long time ago, there was a happy prince and princess in a country. They took care of and loved each other very much, and their country was happy, too. Therefore they didn't envy anything else. There was one thing they worried about. They wanted to make sure they could live happily forever like this.

One day, one of the officials found out the couple's worry and told them, “Prince, I heard that there is a magic charm(吉祥饰物),and it can protect you from any unfortunate event. If you always carry the magic charm with you, your fear and worry will disappear.” “Is it true? Where can I find that charm?” The prince asked him joyfully. “There is an old man in the forest, and he knows about everything. You can ask him.”

The couple visited the old man, and asked for help with their worries and fears. The old man nodded his head as if he knew everything and said, “Travel all around the world. Then, when you meet a very happy couple, ask them to cut a piece of their underwear. If you keep the piece of the underwear, your fear and worry will go away.”

The couple appreciated the old man's kindness and set out on the journey. The couple wandered around everywhere and heard about a happy knight (骑士) and his wife in a town. They went to visit the knight. “Are you really happy like the rumor?” Then the knight answered. “Of course, we are, Prince. But our only worry and problem is that we didn't have any children.”

They had to find an absolutely happy couple, so they continued their journey. They visited a happy couple who were famous for their happiness in the next town. And they asked the couple if they were really happy. The couple answered. “Yes, we are very happy. But we have too many children. A mother with a large family of children never has a peaceful day. We worry too much about our children.”

They could not get a magic charm this time too, and kept going on their trip. It was very hard to find the happiest couple in the world.

One day, the prince couple met a shepherd(牧羊人)and his wife in a big field.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On the way back from work every evening, more often than not there would be a homeless man standing at the exit of the freeway. He looked to be in his late 40s but was probably a lot younger. He had shoulder length straight black hair and a short beard, and he was of average stature.

His eyes were what struck me the most about him, they were brown and they had a sparkle. Like an inside light that was beaming out of his eyes. His eyes, I thought, represented the man in general. People say they can tall a lot from a person’s eyes. It was certainly true in his case. He always waved at every car, he was always happy and smiling and sometimes almost dancing.

Every day after work I would remember to gather any spare change, and put it aside to give to him if I saw him. A feeling of joy would come over me every time I saw him, while coming off the ramp. He had that effect.

I’d quickly roll down my window and give him the coins. Occasionally the red light would be on for a minute and we would ask each other about our day. His answer would always be the same, “I’m blessed!”

I knew what his answer was going to be every time, yet I would still ask. It amazed me that even in his situation of being homeless he was so positive, and his answer would remind me of how blessed I was. A single mother of four amazing kids, with a place to call home and with a job to provide for my kids.

Then one day I was called into my boss’s office and was told that I was being laid off due to the economy. A feeling of worry overcame me, and for the rest of that day all I could think of was “How am I going to provide for my kids, how am I going to pay rent, what am I going to do?”

A few years ago,a child was lost in the woods. He was out with his brothers and sisters gathering berries, and was accidentally separated from them, and lost. The children, after looking in vain for some time in search of the little wanderer, returned, just in the dusk of the evening,to inform their parents that their brother was lost and could not be found.

The woods,at that time, were full of bears. The darkness of a cloudy night was rapidly coming on,and the alarmed father, gathering a few of his neighbors, hurried to search for the lost child. The mother remained at home almost distracted with suspense(心神不宁)。

As the clouds gathered, and the darkness increased, the father and neighbors with highly excited fears went across the woods in all directions and raised loud shouts to attract the attention of the child.

But their search was in vain. They could find no trace of the wanderer and as they stood under the branches of the tall trees and listened, they wished they might hear his weak voice. However,no sound was brought to their ears, but the strong wind as it swept through the thick branches of the forest.

The gathering clouds threatened an approaching storm, and the deep darkness of the night had already enveloped them.It was difficult to imagine what were the feelings of that father. And who could imagine how deep the worry which filled the heart of that mother,as she heard the wind and looked at the darkness in which her child was wandering!

The search was continued in vain till nine o'clock in the evening. Then, one of the parties was sent back to the village,to collect the villagers for a more extensive search.Every heart sympathized in the sorrows of the anxious parents.Soon groups of the people were seen climbing the hill. Before long, the rain began to fall, but no news came back to the village of the lost child.Hardly an eye was that night closed in sleep, and there was not a mother who did not feel for the parents.

10 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Theo stood at the microphone. Silence settled over the hall. "Your word is onomatopoeia," said Mr Ramirez, the announcer. I got this! Theo thought. Spelling was sort of his superpower. He wasn't a math or science guy, but he had a gift for spelling.

Theo's brain fast-forwarded to the spelling bees ahead: first the county championship, then the state championship, and finally the national spelling bee. "Your answer, please, Theo?" He glanced back at Alexa, another fourth-grader, sitting on the edge of her chair. She wanted another chance at winning. If he missed his word, she'd be back in the game. But that wasn't going to happen. Theo got the right spelling.

Theo's sister, Deandra, who had also competed but missed her word, applauded with the rest of the crowd. Mr. Ramirez presented the trophy(奖杯)to Theo. He lifted both arms into the air. "I'm the alpha-best." Then he raced toward his sister. "Ha!" Theo said, making the trophy dance in front of Deandra's nose.

She rolled her eyes. "You're a terrible winner."

"What's wrong with celebrating my victory?"

Deandra crossed her arms and made a sour face. "You know, it wasn't cool the way you ignored Alexa onstage. She tried to shake your hand."

Theo shrugged. "I didn't notice. Anyway, county bee, here I come!"

"You might want to crack open the dictionary before counties. In two weeks, you'll be facing the best of the best."

"And they'll be up against me,the alpha-beast."

Deandra shook her head. "Well, good luck. I think you're going to need it."

Two weeks passed in a blink. At the county bee, students from different schools gathered around onstage, some looking more worried than others. Finally, it was time for the contestants(选手)to take their seats.

After six rounds, the group of more than 100 students decreased to just seven. This was no regular spelling bee. Theo had barely made it through the last round with a lucky guess on conscience. And if he'd had to spell aerospace or conical, he'd be out already. His sister's advice suddenly made sense.
