I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their fanilies to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.

A North Carolina woman had her first birthday party at 105 years old. Although she is so old, she never realized her dream—she wanted to have a birthday party. She also wished to receive 105 birthday cards, the same number as her age.
Lorene Summey is an elderly person at Somerset Court, a nursing home in Cherryville, North Carolina. Two months ago, a worker in the nursing home asked Summey what she would like for her upcoming birthday.

She has never had a big birthday party before, so I asked her several months ago what she would like to do for her birthday. “She explained to us her experiences in her childhood. She said her sister could always go out to enjoy herself but she had to stay home most of the time to take care of the younger ones. It was 11 p.m. when Alex Conrad saw the woman on the Main Street Bridge. She was standing by the railing staring down at the rushing Chippewa River below. At her feet was what appeared to be a backpack.

He stepped out of this car and got a clearer picture of the scene. The woman was in her 20s, dressed in pants and a heavy coat. What he’d thought was a backpack was in fact a rope by her feet. One end was tied to a bridge post. The other, around her neck.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Conrad called out. He didn’t recognize the rope because he didn’t want to show her that he knew exactly what was going on.
She spoke in a silent voice, but he kept asking for more details, eventually learning from her that she was going through a particularly rough time. She was jobless, not doing well in school-in short, life wasn’t working out as she’d hoped.

I was backpacking and planned to climb a volcano called Volcan Baru. At 3,474m, it is the highest peak in the country and one of the only places on Earth from where you can see the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans at the same time. It is an active volcano, but last erupted around 1550.
I set off before sunrise. It was a little cold, so I had pulled on tights under my trousers.
