Finally, the bell rang. “Don’t forget to practice your class presentation at home!” Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain so rt of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn’t want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water...”Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain so rt of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic about it.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily, “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Facing the heavy snowfall and thick layers of ice on the road, David was rushing to get to another city. He had little choice. He was heading there for a job interview as he needed a second job to be able to afford a good lawyer for himself, for he had recently been stuck in a legal battle about his house. Afraid of losing the chance, David risked his life and decided to drive miles away in a snowstorm to another city where the interview was.

However, as he approached the crossing, David suddenly came to a stop. He saw a little girl appear terrified with fear. David knew he’d most likely miss the interview, but he couldn’t leave the young girl alone in the heavy snowstorm, so he got off his van and asked what was the matter. “My mommy is in danger! Can you please help us?” she cried, “Mommy is just so hurt, and I am so scared and so cold!”

David took off his coat and placed it on the girl’s shoulders. “Can you take me to your mommy?” he asked. “I can call the ambulance and help her.” The little girl nodded, pointing her finger away. So, after rescuing the 5 years old girl named Mia from the snowstorm, David took her to his van, and through her directions, a mile later, he noticed a car crashed into a pole. Before getting out, David called 911. Then he dashed to the car, where he discovered Mia’s mother, unconscious and severely injured in the driver’s seat.

David helped her out of the car and onto the van. When 911 arrived, he locked his van and accompanied Mia and her mother to the hospital. Thankfully, a couple of hours later, he received word from the doctors that Mia’s mother, Laura, had regained consciousness and was out of danger.

How a Powerful Dream Taught Me to Respect My Sister

It was Friday about 4: 15 pm. I had just gotten back from school; I sat down on a table to do my homework. “Hi, Mom.” “Daniela, I need to talk with you.” “About what?” “Your dad and I have been thinking really hard about this, and you are getting a new sister.” “What, but what about me?” I asked. “I don’t want a sister. Don’t you love me?” “Yes, but...”

Without letting her finish, I rushed to my room crying. I closed my door and went to my bed. I had so much anger that I threw my glass cup on the floor. “What happened here?” Mom asked to herself. My mom came in a few minutes later. She said that the way I was acting wasn’t the right way to act. My mom started talking about how my new sister was having a really hard time. She said that her parents had unfortunately died in an earthquake, so she had to go to a foster(寄养的) home. A few days later, she got adopted(领养) by a family who treated her badly. They didn’t give her enough food or water and she had to do all the housework until one day she got tired of being treated poorly and escaped to a shelter, and that is where they found her. But whatever she said, I just couldn’t agree.

That night I had a terrible dream. I dreamed an earthquake happened and when the shaking stopped, my house and parents were nowhere to see. I became homeless and was brought to a farm, staying there with a horrible woman who never gave me food. Later I found an opportunity to run away from the farm. Then the woman ran after me and I ran harder till suddenly I opened my eyes, finding myself still on the bed. “OMG! What just happened?” I asked myself, full of fear.

For most people, adopting (收养) a pet is one of the best decisions that they can ever make in their lives. In addition to giving an animal a home and a loving family, the owner will find the company of a pet brings more happiness than expected.

For someone like Maria, having a pet was very suitable. She was all alone after moving to a new apartment in Brazil, which made her feel lonely.

So when she found a cute black puppy named Chips, she knew she had to take him home. Maria thought that Chips would be able to fill the emptiness that she had been experiencing from living all alone.

Maria was right. Once she took the puppy home, they immediately bonded. However, as Maria had to work during the day, she was worried about leaving Chips home alone in her apartment. She was also worried that his crying would upset her neighbors.

One night, when she returned home, outside her door was a package with a folded note attached to it. Maria knew that she was in trouble. She hoped that she would not be evicted (驱逐) from her new apartment because of Chips. She loved Chips so much, and she was afraid that she might have to get rid of him because he made too much noise whenever she was away. Maria was frightened and wondered who could have left it at the door because she had little contact with the people in the building except her neighbor, Angelia. In fact, they only said hello few times.

However, when she noticed the names on the folded note, she found that it wasn’t addressed to her but to her dog, Chips, and that it was “written” by another dog named Corote. Maria opened the package first and found a few toys for pets.

During the 25 years we’ve lived in our home, many cats have appeared on my porch (门廊), gazing through the glass door, silently begging for food. Well, what can I do? Certainly not ignore their lovely faces. Even as my husband says “Don’t feed these cats, Caren,” I am opening the door, with cat food bag in hand. These cats usually stay a few days, maybe a couple months before disappearing into the woods.

One evening while feeding the horses, I saw something move. I turned just in time to glimpse a black tail disappearing under our shed (小棚). Later, I saw a skinny young cat sneak around and finish the leftovers. The next time I saw her, she had a companion, a black male cat. I made sure to put out enough food for the both of them.

Pretty soon, they were appearing at dinnertime with our other cats. I named them Minnie and Freddy. I would give them food in separate containers, but they would walk up and down until I went back inside. Then, with no human near, they would devour their meals. This went on for a couple of weeks. One day, Freddy didn’t show up. We never saw him again.

But Minnie kept sticking around our room, dividing time between the shed and the porch. She was no longer skinny and looked quite nicely. I congratulated myself on her newfound health. However, she kept gaining weight —especially around her middle. Yup, she was pregnant (怀孕的).

Every time I think of the card attached with a picture, it reminds me that success is important, but why not sometimes just admit the journey, regardless of success or failure, and show our approval? Our approval may bring us another story, while for others, another chapter of life.

One month ago, I was temporarily appointed to be in charge of a class, when they just finished an important exam. A boy walking out of the classroom with his friends greeted me happily. The sunny smile on his face showed his confidence in the exam. He was Mark, a top A student. During the following days, Mark impressed me with his optimism in class and after class.

One Monday morning, as I rushed towards my office, I encountered Mark. We greeted each other, but his “good morning” face wasn’t as bright as usual. “Maybe he doesn’t like Monday as much as I do.” I thought jokingly.

At the office, Mark’s less-than-enthusiastic look reminded me of his sunny smile. Recalling the first time we met, I drew a boy with a broad smile and sparkling eyes. As a new teacher, pupils like Mark were my favourite. Personally, they learned by heart, and always met our expectations. Moreover, they were easily satisfied. Even a simple “Well done!” could brighten their day. To encourage students, I had my own award system, including empty cards, where I would write three or four sentences of encouragement based on students’ individual situations.

As I enjoyed the pleasure of getting a new idea, I heard a knock at the door. It was Mark, dragging his feet with his head down, “Madam, I’m upset.” His words amazed me. What could make such an excellent student so down? I asked if he had problems with his friends, but he shook his head. Concerned, I inquired if he was being bullied, but received the same response.

“Do your parents put pressure on you?” I wondered. As for this question, Mark’s voice began to tremble and he lowered his head again, whispering, “They trust me and expect me to get better and better. I had been doing my best but I got the third place in the exam.”

Sarah was never a morning person. The alarm ringing at 6: 30 a. m. was her daily terrible sound. But one thing made the horrible early hours acceptable —the comforting pleasant smell of fresh coffee moving through the air. Her favorite coffee shop was just a few minutes from her apartment, and it became her morning call.

One sunny morning, after turning off the alarm clock, Sarah rushed to get dressed. She was going to have an important presentation at work, and she needed the caffeine (咖啡因) more than ever. She grabbed her keys, rushed out of the door, and made her way to the familiar coffee shop.

As she joined the line of cars in front of the coffee shop, Sarah couldn’t help but feel the familiar rush of expectation. The smell of roasted coffee beans and the thought of that first drink was her little daily enjoyment.

The line moved slowly forward, and soon, Sarah found herself near the window. She reached for her wallet to pay, but before she could hand over her bank card, the waiter smiled and said,” Your coffee has been covered by the car ahead of you.”

Sarah was confused. ”Really? “she asked, both surprised and thankful.

The waiter nodded. ”Yes, the woman in the car ahead wanted to pay it forward today. Enjoy your coffee!“

With a warm smile. Sarah took the free coffee. The unexpected act of kindness put a smile on her face, making her presentation feel a little less frightening. Before she drove away. Sarah, in her outside back mirror, saw a car approaching from behind.

Alex was a friendly boy, but he had a bad temper and often found it challenging to control his anger. Whenever something didn’t go his way or if he felt upset, a fiery anger would build up inside him like an angry monster.

One sunny afternoon, Alex went to the playground with his friends, Sarah and Ben. They were excited to play on the swings, slide, and monkey bars. As they started playing, Alex’s turn on the swing was interrupted by another child who cut in line. Alex felt his anger rising inside him, and without thinking, he shouted at the child very angrily, demanding his turn back. Sarah and Ben looked at Alex with surprise, scare and depression. They didn’t like it that their friend lost his temper like a monster and yelled. They stopped playing together.

Alex’s anger not only ruined his own mood but also spoiled (破坏) the fun for his friends and the other children at the playground. Feeling ashamed and realizing the consequences of his actions, Alex slumped (跌坐) down on a nearby bench. He saw his friends playing happily without him, and he felt upset at losing control.

Alex’s memories flooded back when his friends and family were often taken aback by his outbursts. When his best friend, Emily, wanted to play a game he didn’t like, he would shout and throw a tantrum (发脾气), refusing to play with her. His little sister accidentally knocked over his tower of blocks, he would explode in a fit of rage, yelling and stomping his feet.

He had lost a lot of fiends and hurt his family because of his anger. Now he might lose these friends too. He realized that his mean words constantly hurt the people he cared about. He didn’t want to be like a monster anymore, so he decided to find a better way to handle his anger.

It was Tamika’s turn to tell her class where she went this summer. She stood up proudly. “This summer I went to Bradley,” Tamika announced. “They have a big market there. My mom bought a painting and I got second-hand inline skates. We had a great time there. ”

“That’s not a trip,” Jeremy whispered loudly to his partner. “It’s only half an hour from here. My dad and I often go to Bradley to buy tools for his repair shop.”

“Jeremy, no interrupting,” said Miss Snowdent, their teacher. “And Bradley has a fine market. I’m glad that Tamika can tell us about it. Go ahead, Tamika.” Miss Snowden smiled warmly at her, encouraging her to continue.

But Tamika didn’t feel proud of her family’s trip to Bradley any more and she just felt embarrassed. Tamika dropped her head and said in a low voice that she was finished, and then hurried back to her desk. She hoped that the other kids didn’t notice her face turning red.

Tamika listened as Peter talked about his cruise to Jamaical. She heard about Mary’s trip across the Atlantic to Ireland. She heard about John’s horseback ride through the Grand Canyon. It seemed as if everyone but her had taken a big trip over the summer. “I never get to go anywhere. ” Tamika thought to herself. A sense of sadness clouded her the whole day.

After school things got worse. One of the wheels on Tamika’s skates came loose. Now she couldn’t even skate. Sitting on the sidewalk, Tamika tried to fix her wheel but did not know how. Then Miss Snowden happened to pass by. She walked up with a smile on her face, asking. “You look unhappy, Tamika. Why are you sitting here?” Tamika lowered her head, tears building up inside her eyes. “Want to talk about it?” Miss Snowden asked kindly. Tamika nodded, trying to avoid Miss Snowden’s eyes! Bending down, Miss Snowden said in a whisper: “You know, Tamika, actually we don’t always have to travel far to learn anything.” Tamika looked up with watering eyes and wondered what Miss Snowden meant.

To act with honesty was a habit with Susan who always follows the Golden Rule: “Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you.” But when she thought over her past conduct, a blush of shame appeared on her cheeks, as many little acts of selfishness and unkindness came back to her memory. She was determined that for the future, both in great things and small, she would remember and follow the Golden Rule.

It was not long after this that an opportunity occurred, which tried Susan’s principles. One Saturday evening she went, as usual, to Mr. Thompson’s store, to receive the money of her mother’s washing for him, which amounted to five dollars. When she arrived, she found Mr. Thompson extremely busy. As Susan made her request for the money, he simply pressed a bill into her hand.

With the bill in hand, Susan happily went out of the gate. Pausing to put the money safely in her purse, she discovered that he had given her two bills instead of one. She looked around; nobody was near and her first reaction was joy at the unexpected prize.

“It is all mine,” said she to herself. “I will buy my mother a new coat with it, and she can give her old one to my sister Mary, and then Mary can go to school with me next winter. I wonder if I can buy a pair of shoes for my brother Tom, too.”

At that moment she remembered that he must have given it to her by mistake. But again the voice of the tempter whispered, ‘‘He gave it, and how do you know that he did not intend to make you a present of it? Keep it! He will never know it.”
