1 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

One morning, Ann’s neighbour Tracy found a lost dog wandering around the local elementary school. It was a beautiful dog, which attracted Tracy a lot. So Tracy thought the owner of the dog must have been worried about it and looked for it around, she was a warm-hearted woman, so she decided to help the lost dog. In no time, she asked Ann if she could keep an eye on the dog. Ann said that she could watch it only for the day.

Tracy took photos of the dog and printed off 400 FOUND flyers (传单), and put them in mailboxes. Meanwhile, Ann went to the dollar store and bought some pet supplies, warning her two sons not to fall in love with the dog. At the time, Ann’s son Thomas was 10 years old, and Jack, who was recovering from a heart operation, was 21 years old.

Four days later Ann was still looking after the dog, which they had started to call Riley. They began to love the dog, which was so clever and cute that every member of the family loved it. One day, when Ann arrived home from work, the dog threw itself against the screen door and barked madly at her. As soon as she opened the door, Riley dashed into the boys’ room where Ann found Jack suffering from a heart attack. Riley ran over to Jack, but as soon as Ann bent over to help him the dog went silent.

“If it hadn’t come to get me, the doctor said Jack would have died,” Ann reported to a local newspaper. At this point, no one had called to claim the dog, so Ann decided to keep it.

Paragraph 1:

However, the next morning Tracy got a call.

The meeting had come to an end. Bob started to stand up, spilling his coffee over his notes. ''How embarrassing. I am getting so clumsy in my old age.'' Everyone had a good laugh, and soon we were all telling stories of our most embarrassing moments. Someone said, ''Come on, Frank. Tell us your most embarrassing moment.''

''My embarrassing moment? '' I said and began to fall into the memory of the past, ''Honestly, it is the most regretful one for me in my life.''

I grew up in San Pedro. My Dad was a fisherman, and he loved the sea. He had his own boat, but it was hard making a living on the sea. He worked hard and would stay out until he caught enough to feed the family.

I wish you could have met my Dad. He was a big man, and he was strong from pulling the nets and fighting the seas for his catch. When you got close to him, he smelled like the ocean. He would wear his old canvas, foul-weather coat and his bibbed overalls. His rain hat would be pulled down over his brow. No matter how much my Mother washed them, they would still smell of the sea and of fish.

When the weather was bad he would drive me to school. He had this old truck that he used in his fishing business. That truck was older than he was. As he would drive toward the school, I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. Half the time, he would slam to a stop and the old truck would belch a cloud of smoke. He would pull right up in front, and it seemed like everybody would be standing around and watching. Then he would lean over, give me a big kiss on the cheek. It was so embarrassing for me. I was twelve years old, and my Dad would lean over and kiss me goodbye.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker called, as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated reading aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary. Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the comer, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jenny knew she should just pick it up and return it to Lee, but she didn't want to run after him. Jenny bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jenny put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised that it fitted her so well. She walked to the mirror and started practising her speech. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I've won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magic.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jenny slowly raised her hand. Before Miss Walker could say something, there was a shout from behind. “She’s stolen my watch!” Lee said angrily. “It went missing at school yesterday. ”

4 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On July 8, 2017, eight members of a family in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach in Panhandle, Florida. As the sun sank lower on the horizon, the two boys Noah, 11, and Stephen, 8 swam into the waves without the grown-ups noticing. Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea. After trying and failing to swim back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had been off duty for the evening.

The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha, a couple from Georgia, heard them. They dived into the water and soon reached the two brothers. But after a few minutes, they were all trapped in a rip current (离岸流) — a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea! By then, some teenagers had heard the cry. One of the teens rushed into the water, grabbed Jacky, and pulled him back to shore. Meanwhile, Tabatha could feel herself being pulled farther out. She was already exhausted and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone.

Onshore, Jacky was terrified. A man stopped. ''What’s wrong?'' asked Shaun, who was heading back to his car. ''My wife is drowning!'' Brittany said. Shaun immediately strode (大步跨) into the water. But several minutes later, a gaping 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys. He knew that if he continued, he'd become another victim. He turned around to seek help.

It was about that time that Roberta, the boys' mother, returned from the bathroom and looked around for her children. She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go. She fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them, but she quickly discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction. Looking around, Roberta sighed with relief to see some more people coming to help.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Shoes can tell you a lot about a person. Winston was a firm believer in this, being someone who looked at many shoes himself. Although he had grown up hearing that eyes were “the windows to the soul.” he couldn't find anything they could expose. He just felt awkward when he had been caught staring into someone else's eyes for too long. On the other hand, staring at someone's shoes rarely made him awkward. Few people noticed a small man in the corner watching their feet, and Winston liked it that way.

Winston was able to judge a person by his shoes. He could fit most people into basic categories simply by the brand, color, and condition of whatever was on their feet. At this point- the world, couldn't surprise him any more, he believed that he had seen it all.

Winston was seated in his regular spot, a bench in the back corner of the Alewife train station watching People pass by. No one was found wearing worn shoes. He sighed; a bit bored with the predictability of the station.

That's when he noticed something different two bare feet walked past, making anunfamiliar sound as they made contact with the floor. Strange. Winston looked closer with interest. In all his years sitting at the train station, he had seen many strange feet, but no bare ones. He wondered what kind of a man couldn't afford to buy himself shoes? A dangerous man, perhaps. A man who was of questionable intelligence. Certainly not the kind of generous and lovely man Winston wanted to be anywhere near shoes.

He moved a little on the bench and curled in on himself, turning his eyes downward and his shoulders in toward his body to avoid any possible social interactions. The stranger, however, took the space made free by Winston.

“Sorry. it has been a rough day,” the shoeless person offered apologetically, placing a plastic bag down on the bench. Without the man noticing, Winston glanced at the bag and noticed inside it was a birthday cake.

A really rough day. He seemed to be speaking to no one in particular. “Are you curious why I am not wearing shoes?”

Rebecca stretched her tired back. “That’s the last seedling(种树苗), Pa. Have we planted enough?” Pa walked to the end of the row of cottonwood seedlings. “No,” he said. “We have to plant trees all the way to that rock over there. We’ll need about twenty more seedlings.”

“I’ll get the seedlings,” offered Rebecca. She longed to cool her feet in the shallow river running through the cotton field. “You’d better let me go,” teased her twin brother, William. “There are dangers all over this prairie(牧场). “You may both go,” said Pa.

They went across the shallow river to a sandbar where small cottonwood seedlings grew. Gently, they pulled the seedlings from the sand. “There! That’s twenty, with a few to spare.” said Rebecca. “OK,” said William. He led the way to the riverbank, then stopped.

“Look! There’s the dugout(防空壕)we lived in when we moved here last year.” He pointed to a hole in the grassy river bank. “Come on, let’s go inside.” “No,” Rebecca said. “Then you start back.” said William, handing the seedlings to Rebecca. I’ll catch up.” He ran to the dugout and stepped inside.

Rebecca tied the seedlings into her long apron(围裙)and began to walk. Suddenly she froze in her tracks. A huge prairie rattlesnake(响尾蛇)moved along the river bank. It stopped right in front of the dugout and lay still, coiled up on the warm sunny bank. “William!” Rebecca shouted. “Don’t come out!”

“Huh?” William's face appeared at a tiny window beside the door of the dugout. Rebecca pointed toward the rattler. William's face paled when he saw the snake blocking the doorway. He turned desperate eyes toward Rebecca, then he glanced behind himself.

Rebecca’s mind raced, trying to think of a way to get William out of there. An idea popped into her head. It was their only hope. It was risky, but it was the only hope. “Don’t move,” she said to William in a soft voice. “When I say NOW, you run out of there as fast as you can.” Rebecca removed the skirt-like petticoat(衬裙)from beneath her dress, then dipped it into the river. She squeezed out some of the water, then climbed to the top of the bank, directly above the dugout’s opening.

Paragraph 1:

"Get ready to run, William,” she said, keeping an eye on the motionless snake.

7 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Carl lost his job. He tried to find another one but it wasn’t easy. As a result, the poor fellow couldn’t pay his bills and he couldn’t even find anybody to lend him any.

Carl spent most of his days at home. Sometimes he looked out of the window and watched his neighbor’s house. An old professor lived there alone. Strangely, he hardly talked to his neighbors. Carl could see into the professor’s house because he never drew the curtain. The rooms were full of antique(古董) furniture and vases. Carl thought, “If I got an antique vase, I could sell it for a lot of money.”

Every day Carl saw the professor. He left at 10 o'clock in the morning and came back home at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. He had a dog. Carl often went to the fence and played with it or gave it a piece of meat.

One day Carl thought, “I will go into the professor’s house and steal a vase. I will break the window and climb in. The dog is not a problem.”

There was an old gun in the cellar(地下室). It had been his great grandfather’s favorite thing a long time before. Carl didn’t want to use the gun but he thought, “Anything could happen.”

He wanted to hide the gun under his coat but it was too long so he had to cut the end off with a saw(锯).

The next morning he watched the professor leaving home at 10 o'clock. Carl climbed over the fence. The dog ran to him and Carl gave it a big bone. He threw a piece of stone through the window, which broke. It wasn’t high. He could climb into the house easily.

He looked around inside. There were paintings on the walls, small figures and vases on the shelves and the floor. Carl didn’t know much about arts. He couldn’t choose. He reached his hands towards a big vase when he heard a noise. The front door opened and someone entered the house.

8 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I woke up earlier than my brother as every other day of the week. I jumped out of the bed, got dressed, brushed my teeth, and had breakfast. Saying good bye to my mother, I got in the car no later than 7:05. I got to school on time, even though my brother came out of the house late as he used to.

It was a Thursday. I was walking to the chemistry rooms when my phone in my left pocket vibrated(震动). I took it out and looked at the shiny screen. As soon as I saw my father’s name on that screen I realized something was not right.

He would not call me in the middle of a school day just to talk. He would want me to focus in school and do well. I answered the phone, and my father sounded worried. He told me to find my brother as soon as possible, walk with him to the school picking-up zone and get in the car with my brother. Our driver would take us back home where my father was.

When I was in the car with my brother my dad called the driver and told him to take us to the hospital. We were going to meet him and my mum there. As soon as my brother and I found about the change in plans, we looked at each other in the eyes. I immediately noticed the fear in brother’s eyes.

To be honest, I was really scared too, probably more than he was. But I did not say anything. We arrived at the hospital. I saw my dad on the phone waiting for us at the entrance. He was smoking. Seeing my dad smoking made me more worried. I had never seen him smoke before. He hated it. As soon as he recognized the white car, he threw the cigarette away. I looked at my brother; he was looking out of the other window. I did not tell him what I just saw. I did not want him to worry.

We were three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. We were short of money, so we had two goals today:

1. Try out our new “Smile!” signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread in Pike Place Market.

2. Raise at least $80 by doing street performances. Singing, drawing or storytelling. This would be enough for gas to Portland and a small hotel room.

We weren’t sure how people would react to our signs. It’s so easy to walk past a busy crowd, lost in your own world, refusing to make eye-contact with strangers, and feeling alone despite being surrounded by hundreds of people just like you. Finally, I gathered courage to raise our signs and shouted, “Hi here!” to a young couple. They looked over, confused for a moment, read my sign and broke into smiles. Then we saw more smiling faces in the crowd.

Before long, our signs were wildly popular. Tourists wanted photos with us. Strangers stopped to ask us about our signs. We told them the story of our acts of kindness road trip and listened to their stories, too.

Sometimes I’d see unfriendly faces and feel particularly nervous to show them my bright sign. But I was always rewarded with a big smile whenever I did so. Suddenly they were no longer faces of strangers but those of neighbors and friends. This world is full of good people we just don’t know yet. We got so wrapped up in our wonderful “Smile! ” project that we forgot the other goal. Before we knew it,the sun was setting, and we had no money for our trip to Portland.

One of my sisters who had worked abroad for 10 years returned home for her vacation.

All the family members were happy. My parents gave her a simple celebration and prepared food for us to share.

While staying with them, an idea came to me. We could have a family outing on the beach! All of my siblings (兄弟姐妹) agreed! It had been a long time since we went outing last time and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.

The weather was nice and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coldness of it. My siblings placed our things in a big cottage (村舍). They brought many foods and planned to cook fish and pork meat. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing for food while the children went to swim. I couldn’t swim though I was already a teenager. That was why I just played in the shallow part of the sea.

On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to take a ride on the boat. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman for using his boat and started to push it towards the sea. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. A few minutes later, I made it float on water and I enjoyed it! I made it move forward and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly, the seawater became disturbing and large waves surrounded me. I couldn’t control the boat anymore.

Paragraph 1:

My boat was pulled towards the deeper part.
