3 . Modern life is impossible without traveling. The fastest way of traveling is by plane. With a modern airliner you can travel in one day to places which it may take a month or more to get to a hundred years ago.

Traveling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages. You can see the country you are traveling through. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. They make even the longest journey enjoyable.

Some people prefer to travel by sea when possible. There are large liners and river boats. You can visit many other countries and different parts of your country on them. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but traveling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.

Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles a day, just as you like. You can stop wherever you wish where there is something interesting to see, at a good restaurant where you can enjoy a good meal, or at a hotel

To spend the night. That is why traveling by car is popular for pleasurable trips, while people usually take a train or a plane when they traveling on business.

Last Sunday,while eating in a restaurant,I noticed a bowl of dumplings on the table next to ours，They must have left by someone．Just then，a old man in rags entered into the restaurant．Judge from his clothes， he must be poor．He saw the dumplings left on the table．Looking shyly，he sat down and started eating．The other around looked at him, puzzled，and some even laughing. However，after finishing the dumplings，they went up to the donation box on the counter and put one hundred yuan in it，leaving us all shocked but ashamed．

We shouldn't judge a person just from his appearance．A person with a loving heart is the richer in the world．

2019 marks the 31st anniversary of World AIDS Day,which falls on December 1．

First    1    （observe）in 1988，World AIDS Day was initiated by health ministers from around the world    2    called for a spirit of social    3    （tolerate） and a greater awareness of HIV/AIDS on an international scale．

Every year，World AIDS Day focuses on a single theme．This year，with the theme of Communities make the difference,the Day aims    4    （recognize）the essential role that communities play in the AIDS response．The message of 2019 calls on local communities worldwide to continue delivery of HIV services，and asks for help in    5    （defend） human rights on behalf of those diagnosed with the disease．

Located in the Indian Ocean， the Maldives are among the most beautiful islands in the world with sandy white beaches，clear water，and amazing coral reefs （珊瑚礁）．The country relies on tourism，fishing，and shipping．But the rising sea level and the carbon pollution causing warming oceans are threatening their existence．Heavy storms，more widespread and more frequent flooding sea water flowing into fresh water，beach erosion （侵蚀） and death of coral reefs， and the reduction of fisheries are changing the ways the Maldivians see their world．

The Maldives have asked for international help． They are a tiny country．The big polluters of the world ate responsible for climate change and the rising sea level． The World Bank， the United States， the European Union，and many other groups have offered money to develop safeguards against climate change．

To protect the islands the Maldives have built sea walls and increased the altitude of important buildings and services such as the two international airports，which lie just 165 feet from the coastline．

They're also building up islands such as the Huhumale．The new island is surrounded by nine﹣foot sea walls． More than 40，000 people live there． The plan is to house 240，000， providing new opportunities for jobs．The goal is an excellent planned community with sustainable housing and buildings sensitive to the environment and needs of the people．

The government will relocate people living on smaller，lower﹣lying islands to the new built﹣up islands It's reported that one in three of the 185 islands will have to be given up．The new islands offer free houses，new schools，health hospitals，fresh water，and waste treatment．Depending on tourism，the country hopes to build 50 more tourist islands．

"Climate change is happening，but we are not leaving the Maldives to the sea"，said Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim， The Maldives will protect their islands，people and tourism with new islands and ongoing island development against rising sea level．

7 . Thanks to artificial intelligence，cars are beginning to drive by themselves machines can recognize people's faces and people can ask for information and even talk to a smartphone system such as Apple's Siri that uses a human voice．

They have been used to create advanced prosthetics for people who have lost their limbs （肢）．More smart machines are in the making，said Arthur Lupia of the National Science Foundation Today's exoskeletons （人形机甲） help human beings，transport very large objects and navigate impossible situations． But this project is about tomorrows exoskeletons．The device that you see here is not just an exoskeleton of the body， it's an exoskeleton of the mind． Scientists say everyone can benefit from using AI． But the general public has questions， said congresswoman Hailey Stevens．As AI powered robots become more common，the question we ask is how we can ensure worker safety alongside these robots．

Well，artificial intelligence is routinely used to monitor workers as some companies do today． For most workers the vital question is whether the intelligent machines will take away our jobs． Experts say very few jobs will be fully automated by the new wave of technologies．While machine learning is now superhuman in many tasks that involved mapping a particular set of inputs into outputs，humans perform better than machines in most other cognitive （认知的） tasks．

But jobs will go through major transformations,says a science professor Erik Brynjolfsson． The challenge is to ensure that no worker is left behind in the process．Experts say well over a half of the children entering elementary school today will end up working in the types of jobs that do not yet exist．They say it is important to reform education to focus on developing skills that machines cannot match，such as creativity and interpersonal skills．

8 . Sometimes the very thing that we think is wrong with us is actually our greatest gift．That was especially the case for Clint Pulver when he became a 10﹣year﹣old drummer．

When he was 10 years old，he struggled so much in school．He just could not stay still in class． He tried so hard to focus，but he could not stop tapping．It annoyed his classmates so much that they would also yell at him and beg him to stop tapping．Clint's teacher gave him several warnings，but he would unconsciously start tapping again．

Clint's constant tapping was such a problem to the class that he was sent to the head teacher's office．The head teacher figured that whenever Clint felt the urge to tap，sitting on his hands would solve the problem．So，Clint tried it．Whenever he wanted to tap，he quickly sat on his hands．It didn't work at all．

Then one day，while Clint was tapping away in one teacher's class，the teacher told him to stay after class．Clint thought he was in trouble．But after class，his teacher，Mr．Jensen，was very kind to him． Instead of giving Clint tips on how to refrain from tapping，he asked Clint if he ever thought of drumming．He opened the drawer of his desk and handed Clint his very first pair of drumsticks，Mr．Jensen's ability to recognize and encourage Clint's gift changed his life．

Since that moment，Clint never put those drumsticks down．He practiced and practiced and developed a skill that enabled him to get opportunities to tour and travel as a drummer．Clint was even able to have his college time paid for because of drumming．He still has a very successful career in drumming，and it is all because one person believed in him．

9 . I didn’t grow up in a very loving family. In fact, there are few, if any, _________ memories I have of my childhood involving my family members. 10 . Train yourself, save a life

On Friday afternoon, a male passenger with a heart attack on Beijing’s Line 2 subway died about one hour later. That’s the third heart attack death in 10 days that aroused public attention, with the other two being actor Godfrey Gao and Xu Yong, a senior journalist at Xinhua News Agency.

They are only three of the 550,000 people in China who suffer from sudden cardiac (心脏的) shock every year, of which only about I percent are saved. Actually, many more of these victims could have been saved if Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR心肺复苏) are popularized. When someone suffers a heart attack and falls unconscious, people nearby have a good chance of saving him with CPR.

CPR is really not so hard to learn. All one needs is to learn how to observe and decide if a person is unconscious, where to press on the patients chest, and how to blow air through the mouth and into the lungs. Besides that, public facilities such as airports, high-speed railway stations, and big subway stations could install the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED自动体外除颤器), a device that proves effective and easy to use in saving the lives of people suffering heart attacks. All one needs is to pick it up and follow the instructions.

Unfortunately, neither of the two is popular in China. According to data, the total number of AEDs in China is slightly higher than 2,000, of which most are located in metropolises, such as Beijing and Shanghai. On CPR, less than I percent of adults can master the skill, while many have never heard of it.

Both need improvements to save those 550,000 lives every year. The cost of installing AEDs might be high, and it does take time and resources to train more people in CPR, but it is really worth the effort because every life counts and should be saved in an emergency. It’s time to train everyone and equip more public facilities to save more lives.
