“Now, parents and students separate into two groups. You will be reunited at the end of the campus tour.”

Groups of incoming freshman happily left their parents upon hearing this announcement. I was less than thrilled about starting college, let alone leaving my mother’s side to tour the campus with other freshmen; I felt a little anxious. We followed the senior tour guide. The other freshmen chatted and made causal introductions as I dragged behind. How could I have believed I was ready for this? After all, it had only been a few months since I left the hospital. I was feeling better for the first time in years. But college...?

My thinking was interrupted by a sweet female voice, “Hi, I’m Jennifer.” “I’m Lauren,” I replied. “Where do you prefer to live? At home or on campus?” she said. Before I could reply, the tour guide announced it was time to create our schedules and select the courses we wanted to take.

We crowded into the Student Activity Center. Three seniors handed out thick course bulletins (课程公告) and forms that needed to be filled out. All around me, the sounds of turning papers and writing sounded like those given by an alarm clock. Others seemed to be moving through the process quickly but I hadn’t even opened my course catalog (目录).

“Focus,” I told myself. “just read through the catalog and find the course you like and a schedule that works” psychology A or B, Geology 101, English, history, sections 1, 2, 3…The list went on and on.

I panicked and almost started to cry. How was I supposed to know how to complete it? I was just relearning how to live in the real world, and they wanted me to make a schedule. How I wished someone could help me.

Soon, other freshmen were handing in their forms.

A wealthy man and his son liked to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire these great works of art.

When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. Unfortunately he died in battle while rescuing another soldier. The father was in deep sorrow for his only son.

About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, “Sir, you don't know me. I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life.” “He saved many lives that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and killed him instantly.” “He often talked about you and your love of art.” The young man held out that package. “I know this isn't much.” “I'm not a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this.”

The father opened the package. It was a picture of his son, painted by the young man. He stared in surprise at the way the soldier captured the personality of his son in the painting. The father was so drawn to the eyes that tears welled up in his own eyes. He thanked the young man and offered to pay for the painting. “Oh, no, sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift.”

The father hung the picture on the wall. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of his son before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

The man died a few years later. There was to be a great auction of his art collection. Many influential people gathered, excited over seeing the great paintings and having the opportunity to purchase one for their collection.

My sister Priscilla and I just came back from a week-long vacation in Portugal with lots of photos.I'll remember so many wonderful things about my trip to the cities of Lisbon and Porto, but one experience in particular sticks out, something that happened on our last night in Lisbon.

Before the trip, I put together a very detailed route of places to see.One of the must-visit places on my list was Livraria do Simão, the smallest bookstore in Lisbon. On our very first day in Lisbon, Priscilla and I searched for it.We found the oldest bookstore in the world. But the smallest one was impossible to find! Back at the hotel, where we had Wi-Fi, I looked the bookstore up again, hoping we'd have time to find it on another day.But our schedule was delayed, and we probably wouldn't have time to look for it.

On our last full day in Lisbon, Priscilla and I took a day trip to Cascais, a coastal town outside the city.We decided, at the last minute, to visit a historic flea market (跳蚤市场).We walked for about an hour, up many steep hills. When we finally reached the market, completely out of breath, all the sellers were closing up.Not to mention that we were both tired and hungry.Priscilla and I argued over the directions.I insisted we turn right, which ended up being another had decision. We climbed up more steep hills, farther and farther away from any area we recognized. We made another right turn onto a random street and Priscilla stopped to check the map.Meanwhile, I looked up at the street sign, Rua da Madalena.I'd heard that name before. We continued a little farther up the street, and I spotted a few people hanging out in a lane. There was something particularly familiar about the scene.I looked closer. There was a small store practically hidden in the lane.It had books in its windows.

6 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I had the carriage on the train to myself up to Rohana, and then a girl got on. The couple seeing her off were probably her parents, they seemed very anxious about her comfort, and the woman gave the girl detailed instructions as to where to keep her things, when not to lean out of windows, and how to avoid speaking to strangers.

As I had become blind by then, I could not tell what the girl looked like, but I knew she wore slippers from the way they slapped against her heels.

“Are you going all the way to Dehra Dun?” I asked her as the train pulled out of the station.

I must have been sitting in a dark comer, perhaps because my voice amazed her. She gave a little scream, and said, “I didn’t know anyone else was here.”

I didn’t see you either at first,’’ I said. “But I heard you come in.” I wondered if I would be able to prevent her from discovering that I couldn’t see. I thought, provided I kept to my seat, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

“I’m getting down at Saharanpur,’’ the girl said. “Where are you going?”

“To Dehra Dun, and then to Mussoorie,” I replied.

“Oh, lucky you! I wish I were going to Mussoorie. I love the mountains, especially in October.”

“Yes, this is the best time.” I said, calling on my memories when I could see. “The hills are covered with wild flowers, the sun is delicious, and at night you can sit in front of a log fire and drink a little brandy.”

Most of the tourists have gone, and for a while we sat in silence.

She was silent, and I wondered if my words had touched her. “What is it like outside?” I asked. But I made a mistake. Had she noticed already that I could not see?

“Why don’t you look out of the window?” she asked quite naturally.

7 . Music died here last spring,or rather,it was killed by members of the school committee who ignored the importance of music and drama as part of the high school curriculum.

The committee decide that teaching students how to take a standardized test is more important than a curriculum in which students can explore their interests in the arts.Because the school system is running out of funding,it needs to make sure that students pass the test or even more money will be lost.If students fail the state standardized test,it is not the fault of drama and music classes. They are failing because the“academic”classes are in deficiency in a way.

It is painful to think of how many students will be discouraged from singing, acting, and playing instruments because school programs are no longer offered. Many families cannot afford private music lessons, and many potential musicians and artists may not find their callings if they are not exposed to the arts in school. The fact that the school committee thinks the arts are not worth the investment will certainly make some students believe the arts are not worth their time or support and the cycle will continue.

Teaching for a test does not shape students into well rounded people. It blocks the natural sense to create and express feelings through the arts—there is more to life than the analytical thinking that math and English provide. What happens after a test?Sure,a student might graduate, but they will have limited knowledge—certainly not a good preparation for the real world.

8 . National Geographic Exhibit "Titanic: The Untold Story"

The National Geographic Museum is always an interesting and educational place to visit. The admission isn't free but is definitely worthwhile for unique exhibits like this. We'll be taking a self-guided tour hut there may also he museum staff on hand.

About the exhibition

On this exhibition, you will be surprised to find that the sunken Titanic was discovered by Robert Ballard, who was then carrying out a top secret Cold War mission(任务). After concluding his successful investigations,Ballard used the final 12 days of his expedition to discover the remains of Titanic.

Not only are visitors exposed to the historical events that led to the ship’s finding, but they can hear the fascinating stories of some of the passengers on board the ship. In addition to items borrowed from families of the survivors that have not been reunited since the night the ship sank in 1912, the exhibition contains those from the rich collections of the National Archives and the 20th Century Fox Archives.
