文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。语言和音乐在我们的文化中都扮演着重要的角色,两者有着多个相似之处;有书写系统,依附于各自的文化、能分享情感。

1 . How similar are language and music?

Language is part of our daily lives, no matter where we live in the world.     1     Both language and music play a huge role in our culture and here are some of their similarities.

Both language and music have a writing system.

In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters. Similarly, we use notes (音符) to keep a record of music. Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music.     2     By writing pieces of text or music, we are able to share experiences through time. We can read the ideas or hear the composition (作品) of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.

    3

You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language he uses. In the same way, we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.

Both share emotion.

4     Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words. Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy. Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness.     5     I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics (歌词).

A.Both are expressive.
B.Both vary with culture.
C.How do you know that I am angry?
D.We use language to express our thoughts.
E.Similarly, music is part of many people’s lives.
F.So just as you read English, you can read music.
G.In contrast, you probably also listen to sad music when you are feeling down.

5 . “Be proud of what you do,” my father always told me, “whether you are a boss or a cleaner.” When I was 15, I got a summer job in a hospital. I was told that my duties would include sweeping floors. I smiled and remembered Dad's words. Even though my job was the lowest, it made me feel excited. I saw it as a challenge because it was my first job. I learned to be on time and tried to do everything well. In return, I was treated with respect by doctors, nurses and patients. Each morning I imagined that the dirty dishes would make patients more sick if I were not there to wash them clean. After breakfast was done, I started sweeping the floors of all patient rooms and cleaning the toilets. Though I was tired, I wanted the job to be done well. Hearing people say “That young boy really does a good job”, I was filled with pride.

Working in the hospital taught me that being proud of one's job is important. It does not matter whether the job is sweeping floors or managing a large business. 7 . Exposure to different cultures is one of the main reasons I enjoy visiting other countries. There are other types of food, interesting people, new experiences.     1

A country usually has its own money, such as RMB in China, rupee in India, and rufiyaa in Maldives.     2     This can make travel among such countries much easier and more convenient. In my opinion, however, I like having different kinds of money to use and get used to that while I travel.     3     When I visited Thailand and Vietnam last month, getting used to the fact that ₤1 is equal to over 42 Thai baht and 27,000 Vietnamese dong was also quite a good test for my maths skills!

If you’ve ever been to the U.K., you will know the Queen’s head is on every banknote and every coin. I was living in the Quebec province of Canada last year and money there surprised me greatly.     4     This is because she’s also Canada’s Head of State. Images on the Canadian money are various, including former prime ministers, as well as Canadian wildlife like the beaver, caribou and polar bear.

5     Wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill appears on ₤5 banknotes and writer Jane Austen ₤10 banknotes. The banknotes are also made of a material called polymer rather than paper. In Canada, they are already using polymer banknotes and some people even think that the money smells of maple syrup (枫糖浆),probably the country’s most well-known food!

A.There are new historical figures on the pound notes.
B.They have the British Queen on their $20 banknotes.
C.Money represents preference and development of a county.
D.Of course, there’re many countries using euros or US dollars.
E.You will also be amazed by the images on the money.
F.One more thing to mention in a new country is a different currency.
G.It’s part of the cultural experience to hold money with a foreign figure.

Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese festivals. It    1     (call) “Lunar New Year”,   because — as part of the lunisolar (阴阳的) Chinese calendar — the date is partially determined based on lunar phase (月亮或行星的相位). The festival traditionally     2     (begin) on the first day of the first month in the Chinese calendar and ends with Lantern Festival    3     is on the 15th day. Chinese New Year's Eve, a day when Chinese families gather for their annual reunion dinner, is known as Chu Xi. It literally means “Year-pass Eve”.

According to    4     (tale) and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against    5     mythical beastv(神兽)called Nian.   Nian would come on the first day of New Year to devour livestock (牲畜), crops, and even villagers,     6     (particular) children. To protect    7     (them),   the villagers would put food in front of their doors at the beginning of every year. It was believed that after the Nian    8     (eat) the food they prepared, it wouldn't attack people any more. One time, people saw that the Nian was scared away by a little child wearing red. The villagers then understood that the Nian was afraid    9     the colour red. Therefore, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns and red spring scrolls on windows and doors. People also used fireworks    10     (frighten) away the Nian. From then on,   Nian never came to the village again.

9 . There are many interesting science experiments out there for young kids. You can surprise your friends and teachers with them. All you have to do is to put a little effort into it and you should have no problem coming up with an interesting science experiment. One such experiment is to show your friends and teachers that you can make mothballs (樟脑丸) dance!

If you want to do it, first, be sure that you have got all the necessary science kits for your science experiment.

What you need for this experiment is a glass filled half full with water. Add a little bit of vinegar (醋)   to your glass of water, about 1/3 or 1/4 of a cup (60 ml), and one teaspoon (10 ml) of baking soda, and then carefully stir the mixture. Drop a few mothballs into the glass and have your audience watch. As long as the surfaces of the mothballs become fairly rough, they should begin to bounce up and down in the glass.

You can also do a similar experiment with raisins (葡萄干) and pop, such as Coca Cola. In this experiment, all you have to do is to fill a glass with Coca Cola and drop a few raisins into it. The raisins should begin to bounce up and down in the glass of Coca Cola. You can also replace the raisins with mothballs and you should get the same effect in the Coca Cola. This project works because the irregular surfaces of the mothballs and the raisins hold some CO₂ bubbles (气泡) , causing them to bounce up and down in a dancing motion.

1. The writer writes this passage to________ .
A.teach kids how to do an easy and interesting science experiment
B.encourage people to spend more time on science
C.tell us how good he is at doing science experiments

4. From the last paragraph we can know________.
