1 . An artistic student from a school near Rochester, New York decided to get down to a photography project of a different kind.

Each day, Chaz Rorick from Rush-Henrietta High School decided to upload an Instagram photo of himself imitating(模仿) a US president alongside a photo of the actual president.

Many would agree the impressions are quite familiar.

Rorick’s project started when he realized the set of clothes he wore looked like that of President Harry Truman while watching a documentary. He took a photo of himself, placed it next to one of Truman, and posted it on Instagram.

He had an instant fan: his father. “The next day I did Roosevelt for fun, but by the third picture I did one a day, no matter how busy I was. My friends enthusiastically encouraged me to carry on with such strange and unusual things,” the high school junior told Mashable.

According to Rochester Homepage.net, Rorick said of his project, “It was not too much work, maybe half an hour a night doing it, except for the ones with wigs(假发) and mustaches. I cut out paper for it. I taped cotton to my head.”

“It was fun though,” he added. “All my friends supported it. My parents supported it. History teachers are crazy about it.”

4 . For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smart phones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 13 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.

Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents if something is wrong,” Julian says.

Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.

Have you ever had to enter a parent’s e-mail address when signing up for a website? That safety net is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sits for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, unless their parents agree.

This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 when there were no smart phones. “The nature of the way kids get online has changed,” FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said. When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs and services that give user location.

COPPA doesn’t cover everything that can go wrong online. That’s why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online. “There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. “It’s important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it also can be dangerous if you are not careful.” he adds.

1. Julian’s parents check his web use to make sure ________.
A.he doesn’t watch too many videosB.he doesn’t play computer games
C.he stays safe on the InternetD.he controls his online time

5 . We tend to take holiday colors for granted, since they’re so deep-rooted in our culture. It’s usually pretty clear what colors go with what holidays. But what might be less clear is why certain colors are associated with certain holidays. For instance, as black and orange begin to take over department store corridor as decorations, we wonder how these colors became so popular for the holiday. Is it just because of black cats and pumpkins, or is there a deeper meaning to it?

To learn how black became associated with Halloween, we’ll have to explore the history of the holiday itself. Halloween can date back to a pagan celebration called Samhain, a ceremony that the ancient Celts celebrated in late October and early November. The purpose of the celebration was to welcome in the time of harvest, and with it, “the dark half of the year”.

But the true symbolic significance of black had to do with death, as did the holiday. The ancient Celts believed that during Samhain, the boundaries between the living and the dead were weakened. So the celebration would also include offerings to dead ancestors, and celebrants would wear deep black mourning dress.

Orange is a little self-explanatory. But it also has to do with the particular time of year. Again, Samhain was introducing the harvest time; people would have seen the trees turn orange after months of greenery. But the orange also has to do with another important component of the ancient Samhain celebrations: fire. The ancient Celts would light community fires while leaving the fires in their own fireplace to burn out. The fires could also be ceremonies to help defend against devils(魔鬼) while the gateway between the living and the dead was weak. And those fires certainly would have been orange!

1. Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?
A.Getting together and enjoying feasts.B.Mourning ancestors.
C.A celebration of Samhain.D.The weakened boundaries.
2. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Orange trees brought harvest to people.B.The meaning of Orange is difficult to explain.
C.People left the fire to burn out to keep warm.D.The color of fire was believed to drive away devils.
3. What could be the best title for the passage?
A.Connections between black and orange
B.The most popular colors of Halloween
C.Certain colors are associated with certain holidays
D.The ways for ancient people to celebrate Halloween

6 . My First Marathon

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.

The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. I was all about the batter against my own body and mind. A test of will!

The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.

Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!

At mile 3.1 passed sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.

By mile 21, I was starving!

As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.

The other day after work, I was walking down the street while I saw a boy riding a nice bicycle, one of those bicycle with only one wheel. Dressing in pink from head to toe, he was singing a song which was sounded like a children’s song. I thought he must be total crazy. Just then, a lady dropped 20-dollar bill on the ground, but he didn’t realize it. The guy in pink picked out the money and gave it back to her. After that, he rode on but soon disappeared before the lady could thank him. How a strange and good guy!

10 . What do you usually do to comfort your friends when they are feeling sad or depressed? You probably pat them on the back or shoulder, or maybe you give them a big, warm hug.

We used to think that knowing when and how to comfort others was an ability that only humans have. But scientists have discovered that apes (猩猩)have this ability, too. Two researchers from Emory University in Atlanta, US, went to an Ape Protection Centre in Congo to study bonobos (倭黑猩猩),which are closely related to humans.

The researchers analyzed the bonobos' reactions after more than 370 cases of stressful situations, such as fights and losing temper, and found that some bonobos rushed to hug those that were screaming after being attacked, just like humans would have done.

However, researchers said that not all bonobos were able to comfort others. In the protection centre, many bonobos are orphans (孤儿)whose mothers were killed by hunters. They were found to be more anxious in times of tension and have greater difficulty controlling their own emotions, malting them worse at reaching out to help friends in need.

"Orphans, who have not had the benefit of a mother helping them handling their emotions, are much worse al comforting others,” Professor Frans de Waal, one of the researchers, told The Telegraph. "Bonobos with moms were able to curb their negative emotional reactions more quickly. Therefore, they pay more attention to others.” This pattern mirrors the way that human children have been found to react. Those who seem more capable of handling their own emotions—for example, the ones who can calm themselves down more quickly after upsetting experiences—are usually better at expressing their concerns for others .
