3 . Pumpkins (南瓜) have all shapes and sizes and have colors of golden orange, white and green. Cooked in a pie, they are symbols of autumn that are grown in every county of Washington.
U.S. farmers grow more than a billion pounds of pumpkins every year, and many famers use sheets (膜) of plastic blocking the grass and preventing water loss to make their plants grow well. In the country, farmers use about a billion pounds of plastic every year. Unfortunately, that plastic is thrown away finally, and in some areas, burned in the fields.
For several years, Carol Miles has studied a new product—the soil-biodegradable (土壤生物降解的) plastic cover that can be left in the ground after harvest, then broken down by things in the soil. “You don't need to pull it out of the field and throw it away every autumn, saving time and money,” Miles said.
Most pumpkins grow along vines (藤蔓) that spread through the grass-blocking cover, and Miles wanted to see how pumpkin fruit performed over the plastic cover. That brought a challenge: the soil-biodegradable cover stuck to the bottom of the fruit.
“We have a lot of dew (露水) in the morning, and we found that if we let the fruit dry after harvest, the cover would stick more strongly to the pumpkins,” Miles said. “Nobody wants plastic stuck to pumpkins, even if it's biodegradable. But if you wipe the fruit before the dew dries, the plastic comes right off.”
Farmers who grow plants that don't set fruit on plastic covers won't meet this challenge. For those who do, it means an extra step that they'll have to weigh against advantages and disadvantages for the development.
“Challenges aside, working with this crop can bring on a happy picture,” the farmer Tymon said. “Pumpkins are great. They have bright colors, and are really fun to work with.”

4 . Louise Blanchard Bethune showed early promise in math. But Louise did not go to school. Instead, her father taught her at home until she was 11 years old. She also discovered a skill for planning houses. It developed into a lifelong interest in architecture and a place in history as the first professional female architect in the United States.
After graduating from high school in 1874, Louise traveled and studied. She hoped to prepare herself to attend the new architecture school at Cornell University. But then Buffalo's leading architectural firm of Richard A. Waite and F. W. Caulkins offered her job. She knew that architects gained their training from practical experience, not from school. She took the job.
Louise worked there as an assistant, 10 hours a day for five years. She learned and mastered the drawing and architectural design. She also met her husband, Robert A. Bethune. Their new firm, R.A. and L. Bethune, opened in October 1881.
Bethune appeared to be the strength of the business. At the turn of the 20th century, the city of Buffalo was rapidly expanding to meet the demands of growing industry. The firm received tasks to build hundreds of structures throughout western New York. The firm designed lots of schools, apartment buildings, department stores, churches and factories.
Bethune believed that being an architect meant being an artist, a scientist and a business person. She made a point of advocating for women in the profession. She became a member of the Western Association of Architects (WAA) in 1885. In 1888, she was the first woman to join the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Besides, Bethune took a firm stand on equal treatment for women architects. She insisted on equal pay for equal work.
Bethune left almost no papers or letters, and few people recognize her name today. But her legacy remains in the foothold she established for women in the field of architecture. She started her own firm and enjoyed a successful career.

6 . Everyone knows that the population of the world is the largest ever. As more and more people are born and grow to an older average age than previous generations, everyone on the earth has a responsibility to feed this ever-growing population.
One possible solution to this is vertical farming, While humans have farmed and worked the land as long as history has recorded events, how much humans' farming has changed! From hands to ancient tools to animals to advanced machinery, the agricultural scenes have changed greatly over the centuries.
Now new and improved farming methods have been considered and studied to keep up with demand. With vertical farming, food is grown vertically by using existing buildings or shipping containers.
Unlike traditional farming that relies on Mother Nature, vertical farming often relies on CEA technology, also known as Controlled Environment Agriculture. With this approach, humans affect light, temperature, gases and more, thus controlling the environment in which plants grow.
The technology used in vertical farming is just expanding into greenhouses, where light and temperature are man-controlled. The final goal of vertical farming is to produce the most possible crops with the least possible space.
Vertical farming has many advantages. There are some other benefits as well.
With more and more humans living in heavily populated areas, vertical farming allows humans to be prepared for the future with continued population growth and increased movements to cities.
In vertical farming, since the environment in which plants grow is controlled by humans, farming can happen all the year round and is not dependent on seasons and weather. It can possibly use 95% less water than traditional farming. Besides, it is easier to produce organic crops in such a controlled environment, and farm chemicals will not be needed to protect the plants. This means less pollution in the environment.

7 . Marie, an 85-year-old woman who had been bedridden (卧床不起的)for 10 years, was granted her biggest wish to look at the sea again with help from East Coast Radio and Netcare 911.
About 10 years ago, Marie had an unsuccessful back operation which left her bedridden. She then had to stay in an old age home and needed constant care. “The only time she could go outside was when she was taken to hospital over the years,” said Lucy, Marie's daughter.
Lucy wrote an e-mail to East Coast Radio in April asking them to help her take her mother to the beach because it was her biggest wish. She told them that her mother just wanted to go and look at the sea and go back again to the home, that's all. East Coast Radio did an interview with the family and agreed to make her wish come true.
Two weeks later, a team of Netcare 911 paramedics (医护人员) fetched Marie from the old age home and took her in a stretcher to Amanzimtoti Beach. One of the paramedics found a bucket and collected some sea water for her to put her hands in. She also got a chance to touch the sand.

9 . The third-generation hybrid rice which was developed by Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice”, and his team went through its first public yield (产量) and achieved high output. The final yield of the tested variety, G3-1S/ P19, came to 1046.3 kg per mu (about 667 square meters), based on two lands in Qingzhu Village in central China’s Hunan Province.
“Some previous (先前的) high-yielding hybrid rice in China took 160 to even 180 days from sowing to harvesting, while the period was shortened to around 125 days for the new type. This is one of the most important characteristics (特征) of the third-generation hybrid rice that can reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, thus reducing cost and improving production efficiency (效率).’’ said Qian Qian, the deputy director of the China National Rice Research Institute.
Unlike the previous two generations that required a large amount of water and fertilizers as well as demanding growing conditions and technological support, the third-generation hybrid rice is easier to be cultivated (种植) by ordinary farmers. So the soil, altitude and climate of the test site were not “ideal conditions” carefully selected beforehand.
At present, Yuan’s team has nine third-generation hybrid rice under trial, which are expected to achieve commercial (商业性的) seed production in the following three to four years and hope to apply the technology into the research of sea rice. The third-generation hybrid rice has the strength to promote a greener development of China’s rice production with higher quality and yield.

10 . Have you ever left a place knowing you have “visited” all the attractions in the guidebooks ,but feeling like you know no more about it than before you visited it? One way to make your travels more memorable is to seek out local food, people and activities.
Taste local food.
When we travel to a new environment, our senses are excited by the sounds, smells and tastes. Food is no longer just a necessity to maintain life — it's a tale and even a custom.
Stay with locals.
Go on cultural tours.
There's no better way to learn about a place than from locals. Some cities have free tours where local guides will take you on a tour of a city while sharing fascinating facts.
Context Travel, which is a small-group cultural tour led by scholars, is also a great choice.
The best way to explore a destination is on foot. The second-best way is by public transportation. When you go slow and let yourself wander, it's no longer a task to get from Point A to Point B — all the sights around you will become an unforgettable ink drawing in your mind.
A.Draw it in your mind. |
B.A hotel may be comfortable. |
C.All you have to do is tip them. |
D.Walk or take public transportation. |
E.They welcome you into their homes. |
F.By doing so, you'll learn more about a place. |
G.So stop going to the fast food chains you're familiar with. |
