文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。文章认为社交媒体会给用户带来各种影响,有积极的,也有消极的,人们应该理性使用社交媒体。

1 . By now, we are all aware that social media has had a tremendous influence on our culture, in business, on the world-at-large. Social media websites revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web. However, aside from seeing your friend’s new baby on Facebook, or reading about Justin Bieber’s latest conflict with the law on Twitter, what are some of the real influences?

Social networks offer the opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and acquaintances, make new friends, share ideas and pictures, and many other activities. Users can keep pace with the latest global and local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their choices. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their career and business development. Students can work together with their peers to improve their academic and communication skills.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides too to social networking. If you are not careful, immoral people can target you for cyber bullying and disturbance on social sites. School children, young girls, and women can fall victim to online attacks which can create tension and suffering. If you are a victim of cyber bullying, do not take it lying down, but try to take appropriate legal action against the attacker.

Many companies have blocked social networks as addicted employees can distract themselves on such sites, instead of focusing on work. In fact, studies show that British companies have lost billions of dollars per year in productivity because of social media addiction among employees.

Also, what you carelessly post on the Internet can come back to trouble you. Revealing (泄露) personal information on social sites can make users vulnerable (易受伤害的) to crimes like identity theft, stalking, etc. Many companies perform a background check on the Internet before hiring an employee. If a potential employee has posted something embarrassing on social media, it can greatly affect their chances of getting the job. The same holds true for our relationships too, as our loved ones and friends may get to know if we post something undesirable on social networks.

Social media has its advantages and drawbacks as each coin has two sides. It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。本文主要讲述了美国两位麦克阿瑟奖的获奖者Gupta和Sandefur分别通过为流浪者演奏音乐和为穷人争取法律援助来激励穷人的故事。

2 . Vijay Gupta is known to classical music lovers across the United States. He serves as the first violinist for the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In that job, he often plays to large crowds, including many very rich people. When he is not performing, he organizes concerts for homeless people. “They have reminded me why I became a musician.” He said.

Last week, Gupta was recognized for being a founder and the artistic director of Street Symphony. The group has performed at homeless shelters, jails and halfway houses for about eight years. Gupta is among the 25 winners of the 2018 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the “Genius Grant”. Each winner will receive $ 625,000 over five years to use as they wish. The money is coming from a private group, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It awards grants (补助金) to people whose work it considers exceptional and whose work “inspires hope in us all”. Gupta said he got the idea for Street Symphony while teaching Nathaniel Ayers, a trained musician whose mental illness led to his homelessness.

The 31-year-old winner said he did not know yet how he would spend the money. He has been a performer since the age of seven and the award will give him “space to breathe, plan and look ahead”.

Another winner is Rebecca Sandefur, an associate professor (副教授) of sociology and law in the University of Illinois. The Associated Press says her research actively supports new ways to involve poor communities in the U. S. justice system.

47-year-old Sandefur created the first national mapping of civil legal aid providers. It shows which states have the financial(金融的)resources to provide such aid and which don’t. She also found that the cost of legal services was only one of the things preventing poor people from getting lawyers. Among the others were fears of unfairness(不公平)in the legal system. Sandefur noted that a lot of attention had been paid to problems with the criminal justice system, but more attention must be paid to the civil side of the law, which also affected millions of people.

1. Why does Gupta win the award?
A.For his achievements in classical music.
B.For performing for large crowds.
C.For organizing a group playing for the homeless.
D.For the companionship with Nathaniel Ayers.
2. What do we know about MacArthur Fellowship?
A.It is founded by the government.
B.It offers $ 625,000 to 25 winners in 2018.
C.It allows the winners to use the money freely.
D.It awards people who make great contributions to society.
3. What was the extraordinary thing that Sandefur did?
A.She made it easier to get legal help for the poor.
B.She made the legal system fairer.
C.She paid more attention to the criminal justice system.
D.She offered legal aid to the poor freely.
4. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Grants winners, inspiring the poor

9 . Do you ever pull your phone out of your pocket, thinking it is vibrating (振动), only to find that it isn't?

This phenomenon, which scientists call “phantom (幻觉的) phone vibration”, is very common.Around 80% of people surveyed say they have imagined their phones vibrating when they were actually still.

So, what leads to this universal behavior? According to the BBC, the explanation lies in your brain's ability to discover signals from the outside world.

When your phone is in your pocket, there are two possible states: It is either vibrating or not.   Meanwhile, you also have two possible states of mind: the judgment that the phone is ⅵbrating, or that it isn't. Ideally, you match the four states correctly. However, sometimes your brain decides that the consequences of missing a call are more serious than a “false alarm”. Therefore, you become more sensitive to vibrations so that you don't miss anything.

This is just like the fire alarm in your home—it can be annoying when it goes off in response to just a tiny bit of smoke. But that's a small price to pay compared to a fire really breaking out because the alarm fails to alert you. Now, you might still ask, why can't our brains just make every judgment correctly without being too sensitive to false signals? The answer is that your brain bears a heavy burden every day. “You get a large amount of sensory information that's coining from your eyes, ears and skin, and you can't deal with all that information all the time,” Michael Rothberg, a researcher at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, US, told Live Science.

For example, the rustling (沙沙声) of clothing or the growling (咕咕声you’re your stomach may both lead your brain to believe that they come from the vibration of your phone—it is like trying to hear your name being called in a noisy room.

So, perhaps you should just check your phone whenever you think it’s vibrating, lt isn’t too much trouble to do that, is it?

1. According to this passage, phantom phone vibration ________.
A.is common among people with mental problems
B.happens when our brains react too sensitively
C.can measure people's ability to collect information
D.helps our brains to make decisions quickly and accurately
2. Why did the author use the example of fire alarm in this passage?
A.To help us understand the cause of phantom phone vibration better.
B.To tell us the phone vibration usually happens when a fire breaks out.
C.To show us the fire alarm is as sensitive as the phone vibration.
D.To convince us it’s important to check our phones like checking a fire alarm.
3. According to Michael Rothberg, which mainly accounts for phantom phone vibration?
A.A lack of much attention.B.A noisy background.
C.An overflow of sensory information.D.A heavy burden every day.
4. What does the author suggest we do about phantom phone vibration?
A.We should always fully believe our own sense of hearing.
B.We should just check our phones when we think they're vibrating.
C.We should ignore the vibration bothering when our phones are actually still.
D.We should think of the vibration carefully before we make correct judgments.

10 . Stuart Bee prayed that rescue would come before his ship slipped completely under water. The 62-year-old sailor had been washed out of his boat by a wave while he was sleeping at about midnight on Saturday, leaving him fighting for survival in the Atlantic, 86 miles off Florida.

Mr. Bee set out at 4 pm on Friday and was reported missing on Saturday by friends. On Sunday morning, 11 hours later, he was found by a container ship. “What day is it?” he asked Lacruiser Relativo, the container ship’s second officer who threw him a lifebuoy and helped him aboard.

“My ship suffered engine failure. There were long and sharp noises and I was asleep when the water gushed in the back and forced me up the front,” Mr. Bee told the US coast guard after his rescue. He said he swam in jeans and heavy work boots through the boat’s forward hatch (船口) and surfaced, with no life jacket or any flotation. Mr. Relativo said later, “He stuck to the only part of his boat that was not sunk. He told me that he thought maybe that it was to be his last night and that if it was, had he lived his life well enough? He said he realized he had a beautiful life, out there watching the moon on the open water. It was dark but he found an inner peace as he looked at the sky.”

Leisa Bee, his niece, said, “Another half hour and his boat would have completely sunk and no one would have found it or him. I keep looking at the pictures of his rescue and I can’t stop crying. My uncle lived on that boat, so his home is gone now and all his possessions, though he did manage to keep his wallet. When he called my family, he said, ‘Hey, you’ll never guess what happened to me!’ I had no clue of the thousands of people who’d been praying for me.”

1. Who first found Stuart Bee missing?

2. How did Stuart Bee feel while waiting for the rescue?
A.Peaceful in mind.B.Satisfied with his career.
C.Depressed in heart.D.Hopeful to his future.
3. What would happen if Stuart Bee waited for another half hour?
A.He would have saved his wallet.
B.He wouldn’t have been rescued.
C.He would have been found by his niece.
D.He wouldn’t have reached his family.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
