文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述的是快递员张裕习惯记下客户的习惯,乐于助人,在火灾中奋不顾身救人的故事,弘扬了正能量。

1 . Many people love online shopping. It’s the fastest way to buy the latest trends for food, clothes and games. But a life of convenience is not possible, however, without the combined efforts of the country’s massagers. Zhang Yu, a deliveryman in Wuhan, is one of them. For him, working is not only a means for survival, but also a chance for him to serve others.

After serving in the army for a few years, Zhang joined the SF Express Tangjiadun station in Wuhan in 2019. When Zhang distributes packages, he often carefully records the daily habits of the recipients. For example, he knows which clients have babies and need a longer afternoon rest, the households with only seniors, and the time that the office workers are available. He considers all of these factors when arranging for deliveries.

But what has put Zhang into the spotlight is his heroic acts, which led to him winning the China Youth May Fourth Medal in 2022. In December 2021, Zhang encountered a fire in a residential building while on his way to collect some deliveries. After squeezing into the crowd, Zhang found two adults and a crying child standing helplessly on a third-floor balcony, waiting desperately for rescue. At that moment, Zhang called on his military experience to climb up to the second floor. From there, he was able to save the family, bringing each member of the family down one by one.

When onlookers cheered for him, he simply rode off on his motorbike without any word. It was only after the video of his good deed went viral on Douyin that people knew it was Zhang Yu. Many people have since called him a hero. But talking about the event, Zhang simply said, “I’m not a hero. I just did what a kind man would do.”

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了Demetrio Aguila通过设立M25项目来帮助贫困的患者,让他们通过为社区服务的方式来抵扣手术费,这个项目得到了病人的支持。

3 . Jeff Jensen was troubled by painful nerve damage in his leg and foot. He needed surgery, but he doubted whether he could afford it, even with insurance. “There’s nothing more depressing than seeing a bill for 18, 000, 20, 000, 24, 000 dollars and going, ‘How much of this will my insurance cover and how much is mine to cover?’” Jensen told WWAY-TV.

Luckily for Jensen, his doctor is Demetrio Aguila. The nerve specialist gives patients the option to pay for surgery through volunteer work. He calls it his M25 Program, inspired by the Bible verse at Matthew 25: 40: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”

“We can’t ignore the people in our own backyard,” Aguila told CBS. “We want to be able to offer hope to patients who have lost hope medically.”

Using an algorithm, the clinic calculates community service hours based on the price of the surgery. In Jensen’s case, the $ 12, 000 operation equaled 560 hours of helping out at one of the local charitable organizations registered with the M25 Program.

Like 10 percent of Aguila’s patients, Jensen opted for the community service. And because hundreds of hours of community service can seem difficult, Aguila not only lets others help, but encourages it. “I had this hope that we would reawaken in our neighbors and in ourselves a sense of volunteerism,” he told CNN.

Jensen, whose surgery was completed in February 2020, was helped by more than 100 friends and strangers who volunteered at Orphan Grain Train, which donates food clothing, and medicine nationally and globally.

Count Dave Harvey, founder of the homeless aid organization Least of My Brethren, is one who is admired by Aguila. “He’s helping us by sending volunteers our way!” he told KMTV in Omaha. “What a cool thing.”

1. Doctor Aguila started the M25 program to help those who _________.
A.struggle against diseasesB.have lost their hope in life

2. Which words can best describe Doctor Aguila?

C.Skillful and smart.D.Hardworking and talkative.
3. What is Harvey’s attitude towards the M25 Program?
A.Positive.B.Negative.C.Objective.D.Doubtful.
4. What can we know from the passage?

5 . Next week, Pushpa Nagaraj will appear for her 720th exam. But she won’t be taking the exam for herself. Since 2007, she has helped hundreds of visually challenged students take exams by acting as their scribe (抄写员), reading them the questions and then writing down the answers they give.

When Ms. Nagaraj was growing up in Bangalore, the IT capital of India, her father lost his job after a back injury. The family suddenly found itself struggling. She thought she’d have to drop out of school. Luckily, her mother managed to raise enough money to educate her through high school. Today, she’s a project coordinator for an IT firm.

One day, as she was helping a few visually damaged children cross the road, it struck her how difficult even everyday tasks could be for them, let alone finishing their education. Ms. Nagaraj wanted to help those children.

In India, most children with sight challenges do not have access to specialized schooling. Even for those who attend mainstream classes, timed exams — key for Indian educational institutions, where scores are especially important — present additional difficulties. “Many of them balk at the thought of writing exams and drop out,” says Ms. Sundararaman, a local education expert. “And so, their education comes to a sudden stop, midway.” Having a scribe can be the difference between passing and failing.

Over the past 12 years, word about Ms. Nagaraj’s work has spread — so much that she now gets requests from people from all over India. She has also set up a network of volunteers that posts requests through a WhatsApp group.

Ms. Nagaraj is keenly aware of ongoing challenges, chief of which is that, every once in a while, she has to refuse requests from students to give them the answers during exams. Another challenge is to expand the circle of scribes. Despite these, she is very grateful for having the opportunity to help others. “I have no complaints. Actually, I feel very blessed,” she says.

1. What do we know about Ms. Nagaraj from paragraph 2?
A.She suffered from a back injury.B.She struggled to finish her high school.
C.She raised enough money from an IT firm.D.She had to work to help support her family.
2. What does the underlined word “balk” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Become hesitant.B.Feel unsatisfied.
C.Are hopeful.D.Are surprised.
3. What challenge does Ms. Nagaraj have to overcome?
A.The limited number of scribes.B.The large quantity of exams to take.
C.The request to copy answers in the exam.D.The building of a network of volunteers.
4. What’s the text mainly about?
A.An Indian woman breaking the record in taking exams.
B.The importance of setting up an organization for scribes.
C.The problems of students dropping out of school in India.
D.An Indian woman helping disabled children by being a scribe.
