A man came to a restaurant one evening to have a meal. The restaurant owner struck up a conversation with him and learned that he was saving money to bring his family to the city for a chance at a better life. He had recently arrived in the city and found work at a nearby scrap metal (废弃金属) site. This meal at the restaurant was going to be his only meal of the day, and he could only afford to spend a few cents. Touched by his story, the restaurant owner took his order, informing him that it would cost 50 cents.

Several years passed, and the man continued to visit the restaurant every evening to have his one meal of the day and chat with the restaurant owner, who always encouraged him and asked about family, and how his plans were going.

Finally, one evening, the man arrived at the restaurant with a happy smile on his face. He had bought an average-sized house in a good neighborhood with a good school for his boys, and he had just sent for his family to join him in the city. 2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

For the past three years, I had worked tirelessly as a waitress at Lester’s Cafe during weekends and vacations, saving every penny I could for my $500 tuition (学费) bill for St John’s College of Nursing. But fate (命运) had other plans in store for me. Just days after my high school graduation, my father fell ill and needed an expensive operation to recover. My family, already struggling financially, was in urgent need of funds. With a heavy heart, I offered all my savings to help cover the medical bills.

But as the days went by, panic set in. How would I pay for my tuition? No bank would lend money to an eighteen-year-old with no hope of repayment for three years, and none of my friends had that kind of money. I felt lost, unsure of what to do.

I thought of Lester, but he always put the profits back into his little cafe. Five hundred dollars was a large sum of money then. There was only one person who came to mind — Mr. Smith, the successful engineer and a regular customer at Lester’s Cafe. He came into Lester’s early every morning for breakfast. Despite having barely exchanged more than pleasantries (客套话) with him while waiting tables, he was the only person who ever tipped me in the little cafe. Would he even remember me? And wouldn’t Lester be upset if I asked his customer for a loan?

On Saturday afternoon, I took the courage to call Lester and explain my difficult situation. To my surprise, he understood and encouraged me to approach Mr. Smith for help. “Mr. Smith still eats here every morning. And he asked about you yesterday. Come here on Monday and you’re welcome to ask him. And good luck, Jeanne,” he said to me.

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In March of 1994, I was 25 years old, poor and pregnant. It was 10 days past my due date. I was dependent on public transportation to get to my prenatal (产前的) appointments. That day I was going with my husband to the hospital for an ultrasound (超声波) scan.

We were excited and happy, thinking a new life would come into our world soon. To reach the bus stop, we had to cross a busy street. While we were standing on the opposite side of the street waiting for a break in traffic, we saw the bus coming. There was a huge rush of traffic just then, and no way to cross the street in time.

We began shouting loudly and waving wildly trying to flag down the driver. But the driver didn’t notice us, since her face wasn’t turned toward us. She drove quickly past the stop and down the street. Traffic cleared up immediately after this and we were able to cross the street. But it was a moment too late.

We were very anxious because this was the last bus we could have caught to get to my appointment on time. The hospital was very strict about its appointment policy— if you were ten minutes late, you had to reschedule. Rescheduling meant I had to wait a day or more. I was close to tears, about to say “Let’s go home” when a police car stopped in front of us. The officer had apparently seen the whole process, and said with a smile “Hop in- let’s catch the bus!”

We’d never been in trouble nor were we thieves, but we naturally felt uneasy about most authority figures like policemen. So it was a shock to receive this offer of help from an unlikely source! Should we accept such help? We hesitated for a second. Then we got in the car, and the officer sped toward our runaway bus.

5 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

In a world where bad news seems to be everywhere, it’s always refreshing to hear stories of kindness. One such story comes from a small town in the United States where a 25-year-old man named Jeremy McGreen went above and beyond to help a neighbor in need.

Jeremy McGreen, the owner of a roofing and construction company, had been eyeing Jane Goodall’s roof for quite some time. The tiles were cracked and worn, and it was only a matter of time before they would start to leak. Every time he drove past her house, he assumed that another group of repairmen had taken on the job. However, as weeks wore on, the roof continued to worsen without any sign of repair.

“I had it in my mind that if no one steps up to help this lonely lady in our community, I’d love to,” said McGreen to his wife.

One day, Jeremy stopped by Jane’s house. He knocked on Jane’s door and introduced himself, explaining that he had noticed the state of her roof and and was concerned about the potential damage it could cause. He offered to repair the roof for free and promised her that he would do an excellent job, and he even offered to show her some of his previous work as proof of his expertise.

However, Jane Goodall politely turned him down because she did not like to accept charity and told McGreen that she had applied for a government grant (补助金) to fix the roof. She promised to hire him once the grant application was approved.

Unfortunately, the approval never came.

6 . 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.

My uncle suggested that I do a work placement(实习) to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.

I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel of how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easygoing work surroundings.

The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.

I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement, but studying and training were difficult. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.

Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

7 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Twenty years ago, I drove a taxi. Once, I was called at 3 a. m. to pick someone up. When I arrived, the building was completely dark except for the light in a window. Many drivers would wait a short while, and then drive away. But I always went to the door to find passengers. They might need my help.

So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute.” answered a weak and elderly voice. I could hear the sound of something being dragged across the floor. After a long time, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before me, with a small suitcase. “Would you carry my bag out to the car?” she said. “I’d like a few moments alone. Then, could you come back and help me?”

I took the suitcase to the cab, and then returned to help the woman. She took my arm, we walking slowly toward the cab. She kept thanking me for my kindness “It’s nothing,” I told her. “I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.”

When we got in the taxi, she gave me an address. Then she asked, “Could you drive through the downtown?”

“It’s not the shortest way,” I answered. “I don’t mind,” she said. “I’m in no hurry. I’m on my way to the nursing home.” I saw her eyes shining with tears. “I don’t have any family left,” she continued, “The doctor says I am too old to live alone.”

I quietly turned off the meter (计价器). “Which road do you want me to take?” I asked. “Take me to Sunrise Street, please. That’s where I was born,” replied the old lady.

For hours, we drove through the city. The old lady talked a lot about her good childhood life in Sunrise Street happily. But sometimes, she also sighed about her tough life now. I determined to do something for her. Soon, we arrived at the nursing home before we realized it.

Eight-year-old Kayzen Hunter visits Waffle House every weekend to have breakfast with his family. They always choose to sit in Devonte Gardner’s section, because they get the best care from their favorite waiter.

The family instantly felt close to Gardner, who would greet Kayzen with a high-five every time they entered the restaurant. Kayzen never needed to say his order again, because Gardner already knew it by heart. The family really believes he’s the nicest person ever, which is why they were eager to help him when they learned his story.

One day, while dining at the restaurant with his grandfather John Donofrio, Kayzen discovered that behind Gardner’s kindness and warmth were a lot of personal struggles. At the time, Gardner asked the pair if they knew where he could buy an affordable car to use to get to work. It turned out the waiter had been walking a long distance to and from work every day. He and his family, consisting of a wife and two young daughters, were living in a motel (汽车旅馆) room after their apartment became unsuitable to live in. They had been living in a motel for months.

Kayzen couldn’t erase his friend’s story from his mind, so he immediately told his mom about it when he got home. “We have to start a GoFundMe page and help Gardner get a car!” he kept saying. He didn’t give up on the idea until his mom Vittoria gave in. Their goal was to get $5,000 in donations so Gardner could purchase a car. Vittoria and her husband were eager to help their son achieve the goal, especially since they had the same experience years ago. It took a long time to rebuild their lives, but they were able to bounce back. Now, they wanted to help Devonte do the same.

Dora is a seven-year-old girl. One day, when she visited her friend Alice, she saw a beautiful bird in a cage on the balcony of the house. Alice told her it was her new pet. “How beautiful it is!” said Dora. “I also want to have such a bird as my pet.”

That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird?” “Of course, you can,” said her mother. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to visit a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room. In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” said her mother “Thank you, Mom. I love it so much!” said Dora excitedly.

The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day. Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.

Sadly, a few weeks later, Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to say at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She’d better stay alone. Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn’t seem to be happy either.

10 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

What Goes Around Comes Around

One day something was wrong with the car of an old lady from St. Louis. She was trapped on the side of the road in the dim light. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Then a man looking poor and hungry pulled up in front of her car and got out. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why not wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.”

Bryan crawled (蜷缩) under the car looking for a place to put the jack (千斤顶), skinning his fingers a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he got dirty and his hands hurt.

The old lady told him she already imagined all the awful things that could have happened if he had not stopped. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid and asked how much she owed him.

Bryan just smiled and told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. Bryan added, “And think of me.” He never thought twice about being paid. He had lived his whole life that way.

Then the old lady started her car and drove off. A few miles down the road the old lady saw a small dirty-looking restaurant. She went in and ordered a simple meal priced at 5. The waitress was to give birth to her baby in a month but she was still busy clearing tables, filling sugar bowls and serving people. Obviously she must have lived a hard life.

At that moment she remembered Bryan. After finishing the meal, the old lady paid for her food with one 100 bill. The waitress took over the money, saying “Thanks” politely and told her to wait a moment for the change.

注意:
1.续写词数应为80左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位登作答。
