4 . Frances Stevens Reese Wooldland Trail Guide
The Woodland Trail was opened to the public on October 21, 1997. Boscobel’s Board of Directors adopted a formal decision of naming the Woodland Trail in honor of former Boscobel board member, Fances Stevens Reese (1917-2003), one year after his death.
The trail(小径) is approximately 10 miles in length, leading down to Constitution Forest. When the West Point Glass Factory was operating during the Civil War, trees for miles around were cleared to provide firewood. Walking out of the forest, you will find a large mass of native hard rock about three billion years old.
Throughout this country path, you will find picture boards identifying birds and plants local to this region. You will also find signs with historic and environmental information written by area specialists.
When you take a walk through this “undiscovered” forest land, please be a considerate guest.
Before walking the trail, please purchase a pass in the Carriage House. Plan ahead, so you will be back by closing time.
Follow the trail markers and remain on the trail. Besides protecting the fragile forest ecosystem, you will reduce the risk of poison plants and snakes.
Leave rocks, plants, animals and art works where you see them so that the person behind you can have the same experience.
Carry out whatever you carry in because there are no rubbish containers on the trail. If you happen to see a piece of litter, be a good guest and pick it up.

Nha Trang to Quy Nhon (Vietnam)
Visitors can enjoy beautiful sea views with golden beaches on the ocean side of the road. Every two years, there is a week-long festival where visitors drive the route together and take part in a large celebration. If you want a memorable experience, consider joining in that celebration
The Karakoram Highway (Pakistan and China)
Every year, there are many people who travel long distances to be able to drive or ride a motorbike over the Himalayas on this road connecting China and Pakistan. There are some areas with beautiful lakes and mountains along this road.
The Hokkaido Scenic Byway (Japan)
Hokkaido is one of Japan’s four main islands. Driving along the Hokkaido Scenic Byway will take you through a series of routes around the island that offer beautiful sights. Consider rolling down the window as you drive through the fragrant lavender(薰衣草) fields or stopping at one of the hot springs along the way.
Golden Road to Samarkand (Uzbekistan)
Uzbekistan is a country that is unknown to many tourists, but it's a fascinating place to explore. Elephant Reserve Country: Thailand This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre. Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks. Daily tasks Gather the elephants at 6:30 am. Take them to look for food in the forest. Clean the enclosure(围场). Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon. If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch satellite television. How this vacation helps If these elephants hadn’t been rescued, they would still be living on the streets of Bangkok. The rural environment is much better for them than the urban environment where there is lots of pollution. Your Comment “I love working with these huge gentle animals.” |
Gorilla safari(观赏野兽的旅行) Countries: Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda Departures(出发): 2—3 departures per month from Aug. to Dec. Extras: permit £220 If you’re lucky, you’ll see lions, elephants and rhinos during this safari. The highlight(最好的部分) of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health — if a gorilla caught a cold, it would be extremely harmful to its whole family. How this vacation helps There are only about 600 gorillas left in the world as human activity has reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a permit, this will pay for the protection of the national park. Your comment “I’ll surely go back as soon as I have enough money!” |
Polar bear watching Area & Country: Arctic, Canada Departures: sixty trips between Oct. 1—Nov.19. Every October and November groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay. As they are normally lonely creatures, this is unusual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so that they can hunt for seals, so this is the perfect opportunity to see them. Extra activities include dog sledding(狗拉雪橇) and a night trip to see the Northern Lights. How this vacation helps If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits(利益) to the charity that protects polar bears. Your comment “These terrible bears get all the liquid they need from their food.” |

8 . My Favourite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列) of lifestyle books. Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl’s writing and it gave me a new appreciation for his strange and delightful words. Matilda’s battles with her cruel parents and the bossy headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, are equally funny and frightening, but they’re also aspirational.
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
It’s about two sisters—Eri, a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student. In trying to connect to her sister, Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse “night people” who are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Fynn
There was a bit of me that didn’t want to love this when everyone else on the planet did, but the horror story is brilliant. There’s tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It’s a real whodunit and the frustration when you realise what’s going on is horribly enjoyable.
The Stand
Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes out 99.4% of the world’s population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those left. Randall Flagg is one of the scariest characters ever.
1. Who does “I” refer to in the text?A.Stephen King. | B.Gillian Flynn. |

9 . Britain’s Beautiful National Parks Offer Lots to See
Many visitors to the UK go straight to London and never explore outside the capital , which is a pity, for there is a huge variety of landscape only a few hours away, in any one of Britain’s largest areas of protected countryside, its national parks.
The Cairngorms
The biggest is the Cairngorms in northern Scotland, with some of the country’s highest mountains and the best place for skiing. Climbing and fishing are also popular, along with Scotland’s national game, golf. Wildlife enthusiasts are well rewarded this is the home of
the red deer, red squirrel and golden eagle.
The Lake District
Over the border in England is the Lake District, originally made famous by local Romantic poet William Wordsworth two hundred years ago. Crowds of people have been travelling here since 1847 when a railway was built to its biggest lake, Windermere. Children’s writers have found inspiration here too, and the mountains make for excellent walking, with breathtaking views.
Snowdonia
Wales also has its fair share of very impressive landscape Snowdonia was one of the
first national parks to be created in 1951. You will find the road signs in two languages and hear Welsh spoken in the local shops. If mountain climbing is not your thing, try visiting a castle built by a 13th-century prince, or check out the nearby beaches.
The Jurassic Coast
Covering 95 miles of the coastline from East Devon to Dorset, the Jurassic Coast is just as amazing, with rocks recording 185 million years of the earth’s history. The first underwater dinosaur(恐龙) remains were found in the high rocks here in the early 19th century.
The Giant’s Causeway
For the strangest coastal scenery of all, cross the Irish Sea to the Giant’s Causeway. Created 50-60 million years ago, the Giant’s Causeway has been a source of respect, fear and wonder through the ages. So it’s not surprising that all kinds of imaginative stories come from it.

His workmates on board must keep an eye on him so that they can tell the pilot in which position to keep the helicopter. Another man is in the water now to help calm the woman down and get her ready to be airlifted. The pilot must slowly control the helicopter sideways and aim carefully. Once the net is full, the helicopter slowly flies to the beach.
