Take Off with Historic Hiring Growth

A message from Kate Gebo

Welcome aboard!

We are so happy to have you fly with us. I’m sure you’ve thought about United as a way to travel, and with over 95,000 employees and growing, our company is also the center for rewarding careers.

I could not be prouder to lead Human Resources at United during this exciting time for our company, while we’re building the biggest and best airline in the history of aviation. Earlier this year, we announced that we are on track to hire at least 15,000 new employees by the end of this year.

When people think of career opportunities at United, they often think of being a pilot or flight attendant. In reality, our organization has a wide variety of roles in addition to our fantastic pilots and flight attendants, with jobs and functions to keep our airports running and our planes flying.

Whether it’s for operational roles, such as ramp service employees, customer service representatives, and aircraft technicians, or for corporate roles in human resources, digital technology, and social media, we’re hiring across every function of the airline, seeking strong talent that will take us to new heights.

A role at United is not just a job; it’s a career. Many of our employees have taken on new roles in different departments throughout their tenure (聘用期), which we support to develop and invest in our workforce. In the past seven years, more than 1,500 frontline employees were promoted to management roles, and 78 % of our senior leaders were promoted internally.

Beyond the traditional career paths, we’re proud to create new paths to help our talent pipelines fulfill some of the industry’s most critical job functions. Aviate, our pilot career development program, offers aspiring and established pilots a path to the United flight deck. Calibrate is our full-time, paid apprenticeship program for those wanting to go into aircraft maintenance and other technical operational roles. Our newly launched Innovate program helps provide the skills and experiences needed to succeed in a technology career at United.

We’re hiring from coast to coast, at our seven major hubs and across a broad range of positions. If you’re ready to join me and 95,000 of the industry’s best and brightest at United, I encourage you to visit careers.united.com today to see what opportunities await you. Your career is cleared for takeoff.

United with you,

Kate Gebo

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章介绍了四款符合人体工程学的小鼠标。

3 . It’s easy to blame an achy neck and stiff shoulder on bad posture. But on many desks, experts agree, the quiet culprit is your mouse.

“There are a lot of delicate body parts involved in mousing,” explains Cameron Stiehl, a San Francisco-based ergonomic assessment specialist. “When you’re at the computer for hours at a time, having a mouse that doesn’t fit properly or is positioned incorrectly can cause soft-tissue injuries in the fingers, wrists, hands, elbows and even in the shoulder.” Countless ergonomic mouse models promise improvement. If you’re ready for a level up, here are four mice that will give you a hand.

1 | Semi-vertical mice like the Logitech MX Master 3S have a 30 to 45-degree slant, which can help reduce stress on the forearm muscles. It can help relieve discomfort from epicondylitis (or ‘tennis elbow’) or help a sore wrist. At 141 grams, the MX Master 3S is a bit heavy but is designed to be especially responsive so that you needn’t move it too much. You can also custom-program the functions of the mouse’s seven buttons and two scroll wheels, letting you avoid certain repetitive motions that can cause injuries. $100, Logitech. com
2 | Look past their uncanny resemblance to Kubrick’s HAL 9000. Trackball mice can be particularly helpful for treating shoulder discomfort by limiting most of your mousing movement to the fingers and wrist. For the most natural motion, Stiehl suggests the Kensington Orbit Trackball. It has both the namespace feature for moving your cursor with little effort and a ring-style scroll wheel encircling it. Unlike traditional scrollers, you use it like a dial. This, Stiehl says, makes the mouse “especially good for people who have issues like trigger finger” (when bending your digits causes them to painfully click and pop). The Orbit also takes the ergonomics a step further, with an included, detachable wrist rest. $50, Kensington. com
3 | A vertical mouse lets you position your hand not flat but tilted sideways as if you’re shaking hands with the device. This position, reduces wrist and forearm movement and can be soothing. The Logitech Lift version’s small footprint and light weight (125 grams) make it a good fit for small hands. “It’s not a long vertical, so I think it can be very comfortable if it fits the hand,” said Stiehl. Six buttons allow for control customization, and it comes in three colors (including a very cute rose), and is made of mostly recycled material. $70, Logitech. com
4 | Working away from your desk doesn’t mean you can’t cast an eye toward ergonomics. The Lenovo Go Wireless Vertical Mouse is a compact vertical mouse, powered by a single replaceable AA battery, which the manufacture r promises will last a year. It also features a handsome cork thumb divot. But the selling point is its smaller footprint, which makes it easy to pack with your laptop. $50, Lenovo. com
1. According to the description, which product chart is Logitech Lift?
A. B. C. D.3
2. Sam is an office lady with loads of paperwork to complete, which results in severe neck-shoulder problems. Which of the following mice is highly recommended?
A.Logitech MX Master 3S.B.Kensington Orbit Trackball.
C.Logitech Lift.D.Lenovo Go Wireless Vertical Mouse.
3. Which of the following slogans is the most suitable for Lenovo Go Wireless Vertical Mouse?
A.Suited for smaller hands.B.A universal upgrade.
C.Trigger finger treater.D.Ergonomics can go everywhere.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要讲述的是广告是如何影响着人们的。

4 . The effects of advertising often work in tricky ways. Many people don’t even realise they are being marketed to when they change their behaviour after encountering advertisements. Advertising is such a powerful psychological tool that an entire field of study devoted to unlocking how advertising influences consumer behaviour has been developed.

Another effect of advertising is educating consumers about specific products or services. This can be part of the persuasion written in an ad. In an advertisement, a company can influence potential buyers by showing how the product works and how it can solve the problems they face. For example, a dog owner who previously thought there was no solution to his dog’s anxiety can learn through a dog vest ad that there actually is a solution, and that solution is the gentle pressure provided by the vest.

Advertisements generally use similar language. Many advertisements are designed to make the viewers take immediate action. Words and phrases often used in such ads include “Buy now!” “Get started!”   and “Try now!”. Specifically, the part of an ad that pushes for immediate action is called “call to action”, which is important to any ad because it drives the viewers or listeners to take action. Besides, companies usually use persuasive language in the rest of the advertisement. This can be a recommendation from a previous buyer, a chart showing the product’s benefits, or a list of the product’s benefits.

Advertising is part of marketing. Although the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably (可替换地), they aren’t the same thing. Marketing is the broad process of researching consumers needs, collecting and evaluating data related to those needs and developing various strategies for attracting consumers. Advertising, on the other hand, strictly refers to the process of attracting potential customers to make a sale.

1. Why does the author tell the story about the dog owner?
A.To show consumers learn about products for pets from ads.
B.To show consumers’ problems are the inspiration for advertisers.
C.To show consumers are affected by ads offering solutions to their problems.
D.To show consumers’ needs can be satisfied by companies devoted to advertising.
2. What’s the text structure?
A.B.C.D.
3. What’s the author’s attitude towards advertisements?
A.Subjective.B.Negative.C.Supportive.D.Objective.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How Does Advertising Influence People
B.What Are the Advantages of Advertising
C.How Does Marketing Differ from Advertising
D.What Are People’s Attitudes towards Advertising

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了电视互动广告的发展近况以及人们对它的看法。

6 . Interactive television advertising, which allows viewers to use their remote controls to click on advertisements, has been pushed for years. Nearly a decade ago it was predicted that viewers of Friends, a popular situation comedy, would soon be able to purchase a sweater like Jennifer Aniston’s with a few taps on their remote control. “It’s been the year of interactive television advertising for the last ten or twelve years,” says Colin Dixon of a digital-media consultancy.

So the news that Cablevision, an American cable company, was rolling out interactive advertisements to all its customers on October 6th was greeted with some skepticism.     1     Cablevision 8 hopes to allow customers to buy things with their remote controls early next year.

Television advertising could do with a boost. Spending fell by 10% in the first half of the year.     2     Some are turning to the Internet, which is cheaper and offers concrete measurements like click-through rates — especially important at a time when marketing budgets are tight. With the launch of interactive advertising, “many of the dollars that went to the Internet will come back to the TV,” says David Kline of Cablevision. Or so the industry hopes.

In theory, interactive advertising can engage viewers in a way that 30-second spots do not. Unilever recently ran an interactive campaign for its Axe deodorant (除臭剂), which kept viewers engaged for more than three minutes on average.

3     Magna, an advertising agency, reckons it will be worth about $138 million this year. That falls far short of the billions of dollars people once expected it to generate. But DirecTV, Comcast and Time Warner Cable have all invested in it. A new effort led by Canoe Ventures, a coalition of leading cable providers, aims to make interactive advertising available across America later this year. BrightLine iTV, which designs and sells interactive ads, says interest has surged: it expects its revenues almost to triple this year. BSkyB, Britain’s biggest satellite-television service, already provides 9 million customers with interactive ads.

4     Click-through rates have been high so far (around 3%—4%, compared with less than 0.3% online), but that may be a result of the novelty. Interactive ads and viewers might not go well together.

A.The popularization of digital video recorders has caused advertisers to worry that their commercials will be skipped.
B.But it seems that less viewers are attracted to the new version.
C.During commercials, an overlay will appear at the bottom of the screen, prompting viewers to press a button to request a free sample or order a catalogue.
D.The amount spent on interactive advertising on television is still small.
E.What’s more, it may not be a wise choice for advertisers to keep adding more new elements.
F.Yet there are doubts whether people watching television, a “lean back” medium, crave interaction.

7 . As a reliable travel agency, we really do try to describe our centers and accommodation ad realistically as possible. All our Super Centers and Main Centers have been extensively investigated during the winter season 1975-1976. As a result we have first-hand information on the way in which hotels, life networks and ski schools, etc. operate during the season. We have not been able to investigate, at first hand, all our Independent Centers during the last season but all have been visited during the past three seasons. Should you need any more information about these centers we will try to get it for you. Our American centers have been investigated on our behalf by United Airlines Tours Department and by the U. S. tour operators who are assisting United and ourselves to offer you this novel program to the United States.

Where possible we have eliminated the use of superlatives from the text (possibly making our brochure (小册子) less attractive to read than it might be) and have concentrated on as accurate a description as possible. Nevertheless you should bear in mind that your opinion and the opinion of our investigator might differ and there may be changes between the time of a visit by our investigator and the visit of one of our customers.

We trust that it is evident to you that we have done all in our power to eliminate misdescription and that there really is no question of misrepresentation on our part—either careless or otherwise. We welcome your constructive criticism—it is the best way we know of improving our brochures and our service. Although complaints are very expensive to handle, your complaint or criticism will be thoroughly investigated and a refund (退赔) made if it is justified—none will be made if it isn’t.

8 . Facebook Tagging and Privacy

On Facebook, there are some Privacy settings you can set to limit who can see posts and photos where you are tagged.

See, if your Facebook friend posts a photo, and you are in that photo, then usually only her friends (or whichever audience she chooses) will see the photo. But, if she TAGS you in the photo, then potentially YOUR friends will see it too.

But you can limit the visibility of photos and posts that you are tagged in. Just take a look at the Privacy settings page and click on “Timeline and Tagging”.

For “Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline?” you want that to say “Yes”. With this setting enabled, you will be notified when you are tagged and can choose whether an individual tag will show up on your Timeline. (For example, you can preview a photo to make sure you look good before all your friends see it! )

Next take a look at the setting “Who can see posts you’ve been tagged in on your timeline?” Your choices here are the standard audience settings such as Everyone, Friends, Friends or Friends, Custom or Only Me. This is the most private option, as your friends will not see posts that you are tagged in (assuming you did not tag yourself; we’re talking about posts by other people here).

So what if your friend did indeed post an unflattering photo of you? You can also “untag” yourself from a photo on Facebook.

Follow the steps to remove a tag of yourself from a Facebook photo:
1. Click Options at the bottom of the photo;
2. Check to untag yourself;
3. Click Remove tag, and voilà, you are no longer tagged in the photo! The photo remains on Facebook but the tag is gone. This photo will no longer show up on your timeline under the heading “Photos of You”.
1. Who will have a go at your presence on Facebook if you are tagged?
A.Only friends.B.The friends chosen.
C.Friends’ friends.D.The union of all the friends.
2. Which of the following statements is suggested to prevent unwelcome tagging?
A.Active the option to approve any tagging before they appear on your timeline.
B.Double check whether you’ve posted unflattering photos of you on Facebook.
C.Unfollow those who can either see your posts or add your posts to their stories.
D.Remove any posts or photographs that have been previously tagged.
3. Which proverb can be applied to Facebook tagging and privacy?
A.An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cureB.Bad news has wings.
C.Details are the key to success.D.Better late than never.
4. This article is mainly intended to ________.
A.show us how to use Facebook
B.tell us how to remove tags on Facebook
C.teach us how to beautify pictures on Facebook.
D.inform us how to set limits to protect privacy online.

10 . If students will arrive at UT Dallas (the University of Texas at Dallas) after the first day of classes, the ISSO (International Students and Scholars Office) strongly suggests they put off their admission. It’s our experience that late-arriving students have a stressful time settling in and meeting all the pre-registration requirements, such as TB Test (肺结核检查), orientations (入学培训), housing and so on. The inability to meet all these requirements may harm a student’s F-1 or J-1 visa status.

Departmental Late Arrival Letter

UT Dallas academic departments have the freedom and authority to write a late arrival letter on a student’s behalf. Departments may only offer this letter if they are willing to make a statement to CBP (Customs and Border Protection), showing that they will ensure that the late-arriving student will be able to meet all university and immigration requirements despite the late arrival.

Approval or denial of late arrival will be based on the individual worthiness of the request. The letter should be addressed to CBP and sent directly to the student from the academic department.

In general, scanned and printed images will be accepted by CBP. The letter should state:

◎ How late the department is willing to let the student start the semester. This must be a specific date.

◎ That the student will be able to enroll full-time in the academic program and make normal academic progress despite the late arrival.

The letter will not guarantee entry into the US; it simply reduces the possibility that late-arriving students will be turned away at the US Port of Entry.

If Entering Late:

Email the following areas the arrival date as soon as possible:

1. Intercultural Programs (ICPrograms@utdallas.edu) to schedule an International Student Orientation.

2. The Student Health Centre (Healthcen @utdallas. edu) to schedule a TB Test.

3. Academic department to communicate about late registration.

Consequences of late arrival:

◎ Late registration for courses

◎ Limited class availability

◎ Late registration fees

Late-arriving students are required to keep full-time enrollment throughout the semester. The ISSO will not approve reduced course loads due to the late arrival.

1. According to the ISSO of UT Dallas, late-arriving students ________.
A.have difficulty starting their university life
B.are at the risk of being rejected by UT Dallas
C.will unavoidably face damage to their visa status
D.have to put off their admission until the next semester
2. What do you know about the late arrival letter?
A.It ought to be sent straight to CBP.
B.Only the original document is effective.
C.Every late-arriving student will have one.
D.It’s the department’s decision whether to offer one.
3. What information should be included in the late arrival letter?
A.The reason for the late arrival.
B.The exact rescheduled arrival date.
C.The late-arriving student’s health condition.
D.The late-arriving student’s previous academic grades.
4. With a late arrival letter, a late-arriving student ________.
A.may still be forbidden from entering the US
B.can miss some classes without punishment
C.can avoid the TB test and the orientation
D.will be free from late registration fees
5. The passage is mainly written for ________.
A.students who have lost their visas before arrival
B.students who need financial aid
C.new students from overseas
