Steel roses, the pride of China

You’ve probably seen athletes who take their own successes too seriously. They celebrate a goal with a very long victory dance or continually talk big about their abilities. This is the exact opposite of

When you do lose — and it will happen — lose with class (风度).
When you win, the good way is to be a polite and generous winner. Sportsmanship means admitting victories
3 . On Monday, Xu Mengtao won her first Olympic gold in women’s aerials (空中技巧) at the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. It was not hard to see what it meant for Xu: When the score 108. 61 came up with a “1” by her name, she pointed one, then two fingers to the sky and let out a scream.
“Xu is one of the handful of women to consistently try the high-risk triple flips (三周空翻) over the years,” said American Ashley Caldwell, another triple-flip enthusiast who finished fourth. “While triple flips are not unheard of among the women, the list of athletes who have tried them consistently is short. At the last two Olympics, only four of the 12 finalists tried triple flips in the final round.”
Women’s aerials is a sport full of risk-takers but all the risks are very calculated. Since the competitions go through a series of qualifying and elimination (淘汰) rounds that include only one jump each, only a select few over the years have been willing to give up the certainty of a solid score with a double flip for the triple flips.
Xu doesn’t adopt the strategy and keeps trying the triple flips. “It adds extra some might say unnecessary risk to the early rounds,” Xu once said. “But I’m OK sacrificing some good competition results to make the sport look good.”
Failures at the last three Olympics tested the limits of how much Xu was willing to sacrifice. In meet after meet, from Vancouver to Sochi to Pyeongchan, her strategy kept her away from the gold medal but she kept pushing anyway.
“It’s a sense of mission accomplished. This is a winning night for women’s aerials, too,” Xu said after the award ceremony. “If a lot of girls are doing triple flips up there and I fall, there would still be a lot of girls who would do well. If I mess up, that’s OK.”

4 . Good sportsmanship is one of the most important lessons that your kids can learn from competition. But how do you teach your kids good sportsmanship? Here are some tips.
Set a good example. The first role model that your kids will have in games is you. What behavior you model will have the biggest influence on your kids.
Remember you are the parent, not the coach. Your job as a parent is different from a job as a coach. As a parent, you are there to guide all of your kids' experiences and not focus on demanding performance. However, if you see a coach demanding too much, speak up.
Maintain a good attitude to both winning and losing. Good sportsmanship also requires a positive attitude to both the victory and the defeat. Pushing your kids too hard may drive them to quit.
A.Teach your kids to put teams first. |
B.Tell your kids to listen to the coach. |
C.However, finding a good role model is not an easy job. |
D.After all, you are also an advocate for your kids if needed. |
E.This means the role of your kids may be reduced or changed. |
F.You need to be nice to all people on the court, even the opponents. |
G.Instead, whatever the results are, always tell them you are proud of them. |

7 . The Olympic medal ceremonies (仪式) have already begun. But some athletes hardly disguise (掩饰) their disappointment when silver and not gold is hung around their necks. The British judo (柔道) silver medallist Neil Adams calls his two from the 1980s “loser’s medals”.
Until 2008, they were in a box at the back of a cupboard. His wife then had them framed for his 50th birthday and they are now up on the wall.
Adams feels proud when he looks at them, but his thoughts quickly turn to “what ifs”. “I wouldn’t change much”, he adds. And he wouldn’t need to. Gold was within his grasp twice, but slipped away by a narrow margin on the judo mat.
“The losses at the Olympic Games were the most difficult thing for me to accept,” he said. “I didn’t win the silver medal. I lost the gold. In my mind they were losses. It has taken more than 30 years to get over it.”
Mark Cavendish, Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah have never won the Olympic gold, but they came into London in 2012 as three of Team GB’s biggest medal hopes. Unfortunately, Cavendish has already suffered disappointment in the cycling road race. Neil Adams was in that same position in both the 1980 and 1984 Games. However, in a career in which he collected every other judo accolade (荣誉), things simply went wrong at the Olympics.
In Moscow 1980, Adams was just 21 years old and found the media focus and pressure of expectation too much.
Asked about being a favourite, Adams said, “It is hell, and about how you cope with it in the mind. It can make you afraid to win or lose and there is a difference. I was afraid to lose. Sometimes you freeze. Sometimes it takes you over.”
Adams says that he was very cautious and that when something was tactical (策略上的) and technical he approached it too tactically. Perhaps it’s better to go in with “nothing to lose” attitude. That might be the reason why the Olympic Games have often created surprising results. Sometimes it’s the ones who keep their cool and work the hardest who get the results.

10 . A potato farmer, Cliff Young took part in a Sydney to Melbourne ultramarathon (超级马拉松) race in1983. Coached by his mother who was 81 at the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work shoes and work clothes.
Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and spent hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s training method was just running after his sheep. He told the organizers he could run after his sheep for a few days and that he could surely compete with other runners.
The ultramarathon generally took 5 days to compete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they thought Cliff Young could die because of the heat and fatigue(疲劳). After all, he was 61 years old!
To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers slept, he continued to race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night where he finally led the marathon. Not only did Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer, survive the race, but he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him.
After the win, he continued to run in many ultramarathon races and even set standards in the world of endurance racing. His running style, named “The Young Shuffle” is a famous running technique used by many runners in the world today.
Cliff Young showed that being old is not a problem, and being a champion doesn’t mean you need to have super-human strength, just super-human will!
