When it comes to volleyball, we can’t help     1     (think) of Lang Ping. Lang Ping used to be a     2     (fame) player. Now she is also known     3     a coach. Led by her, Chinese women volleyball team won the world championship in 2019,     4     made the whole nation excited.

Lang Ping was born in Tianjin in 1960. Lang began playing volleyball as a teenager and     5     (eventual) joined the national team in 1978. Her height made     6     possible for her to play volleyball well. With time going by, Lang Ping played better and better. Lang Ping and her teammates played so well that they won champions several     7     (time) in the 1980s.

After she     8     (retire) in 1986, Lang Ping coached volleyball in Italy and America. In 1995, she returned to China to work as a coach. She was too busy with her work to take care of her family. In 2016 Chinese women volleyball team won     9     gold medal at the Olympics in Brazil. Because of the victory, Lang Ping became the first person in the volleyball     10     (win) an Olympic gold medal as both a player and a coach. And, Lang Ping and her team won another world championship in 2019 for our motherland.

Michael Jordan,     5     (know) as “Air Jordan”, changed basketball with his graceful moves and jumps. Jordan’s skills were impressive, but his mental     6     (strong) made him unique. Losing games taught him to practise harder and never give     9    . In life, Jordan has learnt to share his success with others. The Boys and Girls Club     10     he started has been helping young people since 1996.

During his life, Dr. James Naismith worked as a doctor, taught P. E. and wrote several books.     1     he never thought it very important, Dr. Naismith is today best known for one thing—he was one of the     2     (master) of basketball.

    3     (bear) in Canada in 1861, he first worked at a special sports school in the USA.

One day the school principal told James he was having a problem with the students. Because of heavy snow, the students could not go outside. He told James that they needed a sport that the boys could play indoors and gave him two weeks to think of something.

The “birth of basketball” is said to be on December 21, 1891,     5     two teams from the school played the     6     (sweat) game. It was quite different from the basketball games of today. It had nine players on each team, and footballs     7     (design) for students instead of basketballs. Soon after, the game changed to five players on each side,     8     (challenge) each other on the court.

    9     (extreme) to our sadness, Dr. Naismith did not live to see basketball become the worldwide game as it is today. However, in 1936, just three years before his death, basketball became     10     Olympic sport at the games in Berlin.

Before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, visually-impaired (视力受损的)Chinese runner Liu Cuiqing put a lot of stress on     1    (she) to do well. Finally, she made it. She won two gold medals with the help of her sighted guide Xu Donglin and brought honor and glory for China.

In 2010, she joined the national athletics team    2     was made up of disabled people. She has had to experience countless challenges. “As a blind person, I learn things     3    (slowly) than other people do,” she said. Sports competitions for disabled     4    (athlete) require blind runners to be assisted by a guide. Liu met Xu in 2013 and since then, the two     5    (train) hard together, linked by a thin rope. “To other people, this may just be     6    ordinary rope, but to us, it is the eye, the direction and trust. We depend     7     the rope to feel the turns and the distance between us. Only when she trusts me     8    (complete) is she able to run boldly(大胆地),” Xu told CCTV.

At the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games, after    9    (cross) the finish line, Xu fell heavily because of a pain in his right knee. “In fact, when I was running, my leg was already so    10    (pain) that I could not feel anything. I only had one thought, which was to accompany her (Liu) to the end,” he told CCTV after the race.

Lionel Messi,     1     athlete from the South American country, is one of the greatest soccer players alive today. At a young age, he moved to Spain and now plays     2     (professional) for the FC Barcelona. Messi started playing soccer at the age of 5 for a small soccer team which     3     (own) by his father. Even as a young boy, he did very well. But when he was 11 years old, he found out he had a     4     (sick) which would prevent him     5     (grow) much taller. There was a way to help him grow more, but his parents did not have enough money for his medical needs. So they looked around for a soccer club     6     would be able to do this for them. The clubs in Argentina couldn’t help him.

    7     the famous FC Barcelona in Spain offered     8     (accept) Messi on the junior team and pay     9     the bills. The Messi family happily took the offer and moved to Spain. With his incredible talent, Messi     10       (surprise) the world since then.

The home crowd erupted when China's Eileen Gu won the Women's Freeski Big Air gold in Beijing. Gu jumped into the top position with her third run,     1     (score) 94.50. Her total score was 188.25 in the event's debut at the Winter Olympics.

The 18-year-old,     2     also goes by her Chinese name, Gu Ailing, is a freestyle skier, model and grade-A student with     3     American father and a Chinese mother. She grew up in the United States. It was there    4     she grew to love skiing. By 2018, she was representing the US in the world cup for the sport.

Then, she decided to switch from representing the US    5     representing China. The decision met with shock and    6     (confuse) from her growing fan base but Eileen Gu was more than    7     (determine), sharing her reasoning on Instagram at the time.

“This was an    8     (incredible) tough decision for me to make...Through skiing, I hope to unite people, promote common understanding, create communication and forge friendships between    9     (nation).
