2 . Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu, who won men’s singles Olympic gold medals in 2014 and 2018, said Tuesday he was retiring from competition.

He won the men’s singles gold at the Sochi Games in 2014 and again at the Pyeongchang Games in South Korea in 2018, becoming the first men’s skater to achieve consecutive (连续不断的) golds in the category since Dick Button in 1948 and 1952. At this year’s Winter Games in Beijing, he attempted to become the first man to complete a quadruple axel-4 rotations (旋转) in the air at the Olympics, a jump that he had previously come close to achieving in Japan. In Beijing, he came just short of completing the required rotations for the quadruple axel and fell on his rear, but he expressed satisfaction with his effort afterward and hinted he was ready to retire.

“In terms of how it feels for me, I don’t imagine it being all that different.” he said. “Of course, I feel strongly that I’d like to achieve success with the quadruple axel.”

Beyond his jumping ability, Hanyu’s gift for the dramatics and his gentle appearance made him popular among admirers. Some said he looked as if he had danced off the pages of a Japanese cartoon. They would throw Winnie the Pooh stuffed bears—reportedly his favorite cartoon character—on the ice after his performances. In China, crowds gathered outside the Beijing venue to express devotion to their favorite, and one Chinese follower on social media called Hanyu “the most beautiful icy fairy in my heart”.

In recent years, Hanyu has been suffering from injuries. He said he had constantly thought about retiring from competition since the 2018 Winter Games. “If we’re talking about when I considered turning professional. I was thinking about that at every single competition,” Hanyu said. He said he made the final decision after the Beijing Games as he was recovering from his ankle injury.

5 . “You need a guide,” says Mike May, 68, who was blinded at the age of 3. May started skiing at 27, on a beginner track, holding onto a guide’s poles — in what he calls “horse and buggy style.” Within days, he was unattached and following his guide’s voice down the hill. “It was extremely liberating.” says May, who went on to win multiple medals in the world competitions now known as the Paralympics, and hit 65 miles per hour to set the world record for speed skiing by a completely blind skier.

May suggests using only guides who lead rather than follow you. You want a skilled skier with a loud voice. Once on the track, keep 4 to 15 feet between you and your guide. A good guide will use rhythm to indicate spatial directions; a long turn might sound like “Tuuuuurn left. Gooo, gooo.” Listen for other noises too: A blip (哔哔声) in you guide’s voice might mean a bump ahead; if their skis start scraping (刮擦), prepare for ice; sudden quiet indicates powder.

Always wear a brightly colored vest that identifies you as a blind skier clearly. Still, don’t assume others will take in its meaning; May thinks that fewer than 50 percent do. The biggest barrier for blind skiers is often transportation to the mountain. In college, May sometimes hitchhiked (搭便车) to the Sierra Nevads, hours away. He doesn’t recommend it. “Hitch-hiking with a seeing-eye dog and your ski equipment is not a simple task,” he says.

Ski lifts can be tricky, but you can always ask the operator to slow the lift down if you feel nervous. At the top of the run, ask your guide to give you a play-by-play so you know what’s coming. “I always like to take the same run over and over again,” May says. “That way I get a mental picture and can start to relax and really open up to the experience.”

6 . Simone Biles was born in 1997. Soon, her parents found that she couldn’t sit still. When she was 6 years old, her day-care group went on a field trip to a gym. Simone loved watching the gymnasts train and performances. She couldn’t just watch them, though—she had to try their moves. She was so good that one of the coaches sent a letter home with her, inviting Simone to take gymnastics classes.

Simone loved the classes, and she was excellent at climbing, swinging, jumping, and tumbling (翻筋斗). Though she had a lot to learn, the coaches could hardly keep up with Simone. When one girl performed a standing back tuck (翻折), Simone was sure she could do one too. Her coach didn’t believe her, so Simone tried the trick and made it on the spot.

At 9, Simone learned why she couldn’t sit still: She had ADHD( 多动症). Her brain moved fast and her body did too — which made it hard for her to concentrate in school but which also made her an amazing gymnast. “The challenges we face help define who we are,” Simone wrote. “My challenge is also my superpower.” Simone’s superpower would help make her one of the most dynamic gymnasts ever seen.

Simone is one of the greatest athletes in history. At age 16, she won two gold medals at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships(AGWC), including the all-around (the total score from competing in all events). She has now won 25 world medals, 19 of them gold. That’s the most in world gymnastics history.

Simone competed in her first Olympics in 2016. She was the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals in an Olympic Games. Since then, Simone has debuted (首次呈现) some moves never successfully done in world competitions, including a double-double dismount (下马) from the balance beam.The move became known as the Biles. Several signature moves have been named after Simone.
