Wind, rain, and ice have been shaping Brimham Rocks for the last 320 million years. It has even become a National Trust landmark and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty,     1     (draw) visitors to enjoy the outdoors of North Yorkshire, England. In Hebei Province lies a vast forest called Saihanba. This green Great Wall,     1     at its peak during the Qing Dynasty covered thousands of hectares, had by the 1950s     2    （virtual）disappeared. This allowed sand to blow into Beijing from the northern deserts.

Saihanba is a combination of Chinese and Mongolian,     3    （mean）“beautiful highlands". Until the Qing Dynasty, it was a royal hunting land because of its cool summer weather and beautiful surroundings. However, most of the area had turned into a desert by the end of the Qing Dynasty.

In fact 56 years ago there was only one tree left. But without that tree, there     4    （be）no miracle of Saihanba today. In the early 1960s, over 350 foresters     5    （send）to this area to fight the desert. They were required     6    （rebuild）the forest in Saihanba. Few people, including the foresters themselves, believed they would succeed.

They express the importance of using natural features to their fullest in constructing an irrigation system. The Dujiangyan irrigation system, located in the western part of the Chengdu flatlands at the meeting place     4    the Sichuan basin and the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, is     5    ecological engineering achievement originally constructed around 256 BC. Enlarged during the Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming    6     (dynasty), it uses natural features to solve problems of making water change direction for irrigation, flood control, and flow control without the use of dams.

There are three major parts of this irrigation system. The first is a well-designed levee (堤坝)named Yuzui (Fish Mouth) in the middle of the river that was shaped     7     (control) the amount of water that enters the two channels. The second is a channel of the irrigation project called Baopingkou (Cherished Vase Mouth) whose narrow opening regulates the amount of water entering the system. The third is a spillway called Feishayan    8     (dig) to discharge water, sand and mud.
