Mount Everest, which is part of China,     1     (lie) between Nepal and Tibet. On Tuesday, Nepal and China made a surprising     2     (announce) on the height of the world’s highest mountain. After years of not reaching an agreement on the mountain’s height, both sides have measured again and discovered it’s higher    3    anyone thought.

Sir George Everest, after     4     the mountain is named, was the main surveyor (测量员) of India in the mid-1800s. Radhanath Sikdar, an Indian man who worked for Mr. Everest, was the first     5     (realize) it was the highest mountain in the world. He     6     (exact) calculated the height as being 29,000 feet. But Mr. Sikdar’s boss added two feet to the height because he was afraid people wouldn’t trust     7     round number like 29,000.

But the height most people have been using for Mount Everest came from a 1955 survey     8     (conduct) by India, which put the mountain’s height at 29,029 feet   (8,848 meters) . Since that time, other attempts     9     (make) to measure the mountain, each coming up with a different result.

Last year, four surveyors from Nepal climbed Mount Everest and made new measurements, using GPS and satellite information. And in May, China sent up     10     (it) own team of surveyors, who were the only ones to climb Mount Everest this year. Working together to determine the mountain’s exact height, the two countries announced the new height: 29,031.7 feet (8,848. 86 meters).

The incredible theme parks can be approached here and there. For example, Disneyland appeals to those who favor adorable fairytales or cartoon characters. 4 . Scotland is packed with beautiful places to visit and you could honestly spend months and months exploring everything this wonderful country has to offer! Next I’m going to take you through some of the best place to visit in Scotland, based on where we have personally visited so far!

If you asked me where my favourite place to visit in all of Scotland is... I would say, Glen Coe. The whole area of Glen Coe constantly had my face in shock due to the beauty that I was witnessing1 was witnessing (亲眼看见). It’s just a stream of dramatic mountains, lakes, rugged (崎岖的) beauty and more.

Fort William is probably one of the most well-known places to visit in Scotland. It’s a popular tourist destination thanks to being home to the UK’s tallest mountain: Ben Nevis. Fort William is also the starting point for one of the world’s most famous train rides: The Jacobite. Harry Potter fans will recognize it as the Hogwarts Express, and this train ride will take you through the beautiful countryside, crossing some iconic Harry Potter filming locations such as the Dumbledore’s Grave and the Glenfinnan Viaduct!

This island feels totally different from other parts of Scotland and is truly rugged and ready! There are many hot spots to explore including the Old Man of Storr, the Fairy Glen. I even stayed on a private island with its very own lighthouse, which was one of the coolest places I’ve ever visited and one of the most romantic places stay in Scotland.

This is the largest national park in the UK so it’s another popular place to visit in Scotland and it’s no surprise why. It’s absolutely beautiful and there’s so much happening at the Cairngorms National Park! From skiing or meeting local reindeers, you’ll not go bored and you’ll be surrounded by beauty the entire time.

5 . One of the most important creations of science is the invention of the lighthouses. Lighthouses help in a number of activities such as marking of the dangerous coastlines and directing safe entries to the harbours. The following are some famous lighthouses.

The Jeddah Light

It is located in Saudi Arabia. This lighthouse has been constructed very beautifully and decorates a beautiful structure. The Jeddah Light was built in 1990.This lighthouse is considered as the tallest of the world reaching a fine height of around 436 feet.

The Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse

It is addressed as the “lighthouse at the end of the world”. The Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse is located on a small island east of Ushuaia, the southernmost city of the world. This lighthouse was built in 1920 and today it has become a very famous tourist attraction in Argentina. However, visits to this lighthouse can be made only by boat.

The Peggys Point Lighthouse

Lit in 1915, it is an icon and a popular monument of Canada. The Peggys Point Lighthouse has become a major tourist sight and is considered as one of the busiest attractions in the area of Nova Scotia. This lighthouse also fetches you a wonderful scenic drive and visiting here, you can indulge yourself in the beauty of nature.

The Slettnes Lighthouse

It is the northernmost lighthouse that is located on the mainland of Europe and is considered as one of the most famous lighthouses of the world. This lighthouse is mostly considered as the North Cape Light and is the top lighthouse of Europe. The Slettnes Lighthouse firstly began to light in 1905. Though it was highly damaged during the World War II by the Germans, yet it was restored and lit again. This lighthouse is very classic as to its looks.

7 . Walking over water might sound like something unbelievable. In fact, people do it all the time. How? Almost all of the world’s liquid fresh water lies underground. This stash beneath our feet is called groundwater.

Earth is a water planet, but most of its H₂O is in the oceans. Only about 2.5 percent of the planet’s water is fresh water. Of that, nearly 69 percent is frozen in glaciers (冰川) and ice caps. And about 30 percent is groundwater — much more than the 1.2 percent that flows through rivers and fills lakes.

Groundwater is found almost everywhere on Earth. It hides under mountains, plains, and even deserts. Tiny gaps between rocks and soil grains take in and hold this water like a sponge, forming buried bodies of water called aquifers (地下蓄水层). Together, they hold about 60 times as much water as the world’s lakes and rivers combined. Groundwater is a key part of the earth’s water cycle. Rain and melted snow go down into the ground. The water can stay there for thousands of years. Some groundwater naturally runs out onto the earth’s surface through springs. It also flows into lakes, rivers, and wetlands. People get groundwater through wells for drinking, watering crops, and other uses. People draw more than 200 times as much groundwater from the earth as oil every year.

As human-caused climate change dries out parts of the planet, demand for groundwater may rise. At the same time, climate change may intensify (加剧) storms. Heavier rain is more likely to rush straight into streams and storm drains, instead of going into the soil. So, there may be less groundwater around.

Many of the world’s aquifers already seem to be drying up. Twenty-one of the earth’s 37 biggest aquifers are becoming smaller, satellite data show. The most dried-out aquifers are near big cities, farms, or dry regions. As groundwater stores dwindle, they hold less water to refill rivers and streams, thus threatening freshwater ecosystems. In California, drying up the ground may even be causing small earthquakes.

In Sarek National Park, I wake up to the sound of the wind buffeting the cloth of my tent.     1     (stand) at the edge of the mountain, I find     2     (branch) of the Rapa River flowing through the valley below. Sarek’s mountains used to     3     (cover) by vast sheets of ice. Around 9,000 years ago, this ice melted, with about 100 glaciers     4     behind. Soon after, reindeer began to arrive. Following the reindeer    5     (be) the Sami people, who made this territory their home. In 1909,     6     (keep) the land in its natural state, the government made Sarek a national park.

For hundreds of years, the Sami lived off reindeer. With reindeer    7    the move, the Sami would pick up their tents and accompany them. Today, most Sami have houses in villages near Sarek and live     8     modern life. But every spring, a small number of Sami still follow their reindeer into the valleys of Sarek,     9     they live in tents and enjoy their traditions. Nothing could be     10     (good) than breathing the fresh air and enjoying this great adventure in such a beautiful and wild place.

In this region of Yunnan, the Naxi people make up the    1    (major) of the population. Many tourists visit the region these days,    2     (hear) of the fascinating culture of the Naxi and other ethnic groups. It’s    3    (possible) not to fall for the city of Lijiang, with its maze of cobbled streets. Some tourists have been lucky enough to be put up by friendly Naxi people, so if you     4    (offer) accommodation, think it over before you book into a guesthouse.    5     (accommodate) by a local family is a good way to learn about another culture. Exploring the old city is    6    experience not to be missed. The summer is a great time to be in Britain. The British Museum, the Natural History Museum and Tate Britain are all must-sees for every visitor, but there are also a lot of     1     (particular) interesting things to do for some people,     2     love the outdoors.

The Notting Hill Carnival is the largest street festival in Europe,     3     (change) the face of London on the last weekend of August. First     4     (hold) in the mid-1960s, it’s a celebration of Caribbean culture but now     5     (include) Brazilians, Africans and Europeans.

With its popularity growing it’s estimated (估算) that 50,000     6     (perform) will take part in the parade. It will draw more than 1 million people over the weekend.

In mid-August, in Bristol, the sky is filled     7     colours during its annual balloon fiesta. If the weather is good, more than 100 hot air balloons     8     (rise) from the fiesta's site in Ashton Court.
