2 . Living in a culture that is different from your own can be both an exciting and challenging experience. The following are 6 cultural differences between China and the USA to help promoting mutual understanding.

Money

As is well known, the Chinese are conservative when they are planning to spend money, but far fewer American families are saving money for emergencies and education than their Chinese counterparts (对等的人)..

Privacy

Chinese people do not have the same concept of privacy as American do. They talk about topic such as ages, income or marital (婚姻的) status, which Americans think is annoying and disturbing.

Family

In China, elders are traditionally treated with great respect while young are cared for. In America, the goal of the family is to encourage independence, particularly that of the children. Unlike the Chinese, older Americans seldom live with their children.

Friends

Chinese people have different meanings to define friends. Just hanging out together time to time is not friendship. Friendship means lifelong friends who feel it deeply necessary to give each other whatever help might seem required. Americans always call people they meet friends, so the definition of friends is general and different. There are work friends, playing friends, school friends and drinking friends.

Education

Chinese people value education and career more than Americans, who in turn attach more great importance to good character and faith, which they think are of great value in their life.

________

Basically China values the community and the USA values the individual. If you achieve something in the USA, it’s because you are great. While in China, if you achieve something, it’s because the team, or family, or company is great. Everything you do gets owed to the greater whole, while in American individual achievements are celebrated.

1. What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Americans lay more stress on faith and good personality.
B.Americans think much of the individual and the community.
C.Americans are mean with money to spend while Chinese are not.
D.Americans define friendship almost the same.
2. Which of the following can best describe the last difference?
A.AchievementsB.Individual
C.Team VS IndividualD.Teamwork
3. What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A.To promote friendship between China and the USA.
B.To help Chinese live well in the USA.
C.To have a complete understanding of the USA.
D.To introduce the cultural differences between China and the USA

5 .

People who have spent time in other cultures often talk about "reverse(逆向的)culture shock". If you leave your country for more than a short tourist trip and then go back home, you may feel    1    .What is “reverse culture shock”? Well, imagine the following: You have just adjusted to a new culture and have come    2    (enjoy) life in it. You have made new friends and have had    3    great variety of new experiences. Then,     4    (sad) enough, it's time to leave, but you are also very excited about    5    (go) home. Arriving home is wonderful-seeing all the friends and relatives you haven't seen, eating all the special foods, reading the newspapers    6    hearing music you haven't heard in such a long time. But then after a few weeks, perhaps, things may not seem so “wonderful”. You may become critical of your home country    7    you have grown up. You may not like certain things or ideas.    8    your eyes, either you or your home country    9    (change).

This is the process of re-adjustment. It's a difficult period, and many people experience it after the    10    (excite) of coming home has worn off. Fortunately, it doesn't usually last as long as adjustment to a new culture does.

7 . People in the United States honor their parents with two special days:Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible (有责任感的) citizens. They give love and care. These two days make us think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery (墓地). On these days families get together at home, as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecues for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephone companies, and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

1. Which of the following is NOT a reason for children to show love and respect for parents?
A.Parents bring up children.
B.Parents give love and care to children.
C.Parents educate children to be good persons.
D.Parents pass away before children grow up.
2. What do you think “florists” do?
A.They sell flowers.
B.They make and sell bread.
C.They offer enough room for having family parties.
D.They sell special gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
3. What do you know from the passage?
A.Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are both in May.
B.Fewer women worked outside the home in the past.
C.Not all the children respect their parents
D.Fathers are not as important as mothers at home.
4. On Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, ________.
A.people usually have family parties
B.everyone goes to visit the cemetery.
C.children always go to parents’ home
D.hand-made cards are the most valuable gifts

There is no doubt that China is a country with high moral values. It has never attacked another country, has one of the lowest rates of violent crimes and is deeply concerned with the social and economic welfare of its people.

But when it comes to animal rights, China may well fail Gandhi test. There are no laws against the killing of dogs and the sale of dog meat in China. In fact the serving of dog meat in Chinese restaurants has increased in recent years.

People who eat dog meat argue that dogs have been eaten in China for thousand of years and dog meat has “health benefits”.

There is, however, a strong argument against waiting dogs. Recently, some Chinese animal rights activists stopped a truck carrying about 500 dogs and saved the poor animals from being sold and served as food in restaurants. These people that dogs             are not meant to be eaten but loved.
