3 . Ask people in the UK what the words “Sunday roast” mean to them, and they’ll probably take you back to their grandmothers’ dining rooms -maybe with a few stories of “the greatest puddings” and “the best ever steak”. But now the traditional Sunday roast seems to have been left back in the old days. According to the Daily Mail, just one in 50 British families sits down to this weekly meal together.
There are many reasons why the roast is becoming less popular. In the busy modern world, where breakfast is a slice of toast eaten on the way to work or school and lunch is a quick sandwich in front of the computer screen, people just don’t seem to have the time or patience to make a roast.
And Sunday was once a day when people could easily go to the kitchen to cook. Nowadays, people are often out shopping or at the cinema until it’s far too late to start thinking about heating the oven(烤箱) up.
However, a recent article from The Telegraph warned against being carried away by our tight schedules: “It would be a shame to let this fine old tradition disappear.”
The Guardian further explained that the eating of the big meal is only the half of it. The Sunday roast also makes for relaxed morning activities in the kitchen, and the table becomes the perfect place to share good food and chat with family and friends. “For busy moms and dads, even if you can manage to turn off your mobile phone and the TV only once a week and turn the Sunday roast into a real family event, children can have fun cooking the food and clearing up together.”

6 . It's October and you know what that means —the return of pumpkin Kit Kats, spooky (幽灵般的,怪异的)costumes for the kids and, of course, homemade Halloween treats. The whole spooky season leads up to tricks on October 31, but Halloween as we know it may be changing.
It's pretty common knowledge that Halloween takes place on October 31. For a lot of parents, it's a night of headaches. Sure enough, parents are fully occupied with an unforgettable Halloween party and have no time to be with the kids. Then the kids have to be dressed and out the door for two hours of trick-or-treating time, which can be tough to manage. Most remarkably, it's hard to pack all the holiday fun into a school night. Eating all that candy right before bed won't make for an easy school day the next morning.
Last year, a nonprofit organization called the Halloween and Costume Association(HCA) began a petition (请愿)to change the date of Halloween. They proposed that Halloween take place on the last Saturday of the month. Thus, parents can have time to celebrate it with their kids.
Though the petition started in 2018, it has really picked up steam this year. Right now, more than 148, 000 people have signed. When a quota(限额) of 150,000 signatures is met, the petition will be delivered to the President of the States, and the government will be making the final call.
Really, the petition isn't about breaking tradition but about making Halloween more family-friendly. It technically makes Halloween longer, so who wouldn't be taking about all-day spooks? If you'd like to sign the petition and make your voice heard before October, you can find it here.
1. What troubles parents most on Halloween?A.They can't find the kids in the night. | B.They have little time to prepare for it. |

8 . Have you ever been asked by your Chinese friend, “What is your zodiac sign?” If you say “I’m a Pig.” they immediately know you are either 24, 36, 48 or 60 years old. Askiing a zodiac sign is a polite way of asking your age. By showing your zodiac sign, you are also being evaluated. Maybe you don’t believe in the Chinese zodiac. However, as a quarter of the world population is fluenced by it, you’d be wise to do something about that.
Zodiac sign is a 12-year cycle marked with animals, starting with a Rat and ending with a Pig. For example, if you were born in 2000, you are a Dragon. If you were born in 2001, you are a Snake. If you were born in 2002, you are a Horse.
Over thousands of years, zodiac sign has affected the Chinese’s major decisions, some of which are quite amazing. In romantic relations, a Pig girl may believe in a perfect romance with Tigers, Goats and Rabbits. while Snakes supposed to be their natural enemies. Chinese. parents also try to avoid having babies with certain zodiac signs. That’s why January, 2015, the last month for the Year of the Horse saw a common choice of cesarean section (剖腹产) ahead of the expected date of childbirth. It’ s not because they like Horses so much, but because babies born next month were Goats, which are a zodiac sign not favored by Chinese parents. Tiger is another undesirable animal, due to its agressiveness. Many Chinese regions saw a sharp decline of birthrate during those years.
Although the belief and tradition of the zodiac sign have been over thousands of years, the trend of using it in making major decisions did not really exist until the past few decades. As China plays such an important role in the global economy and geopolitics, the decisions made based on the zodiac and other Chinese traditions end up influencing more people around the world.
