The Cariwest Festival

It is one of Edmonton’s most colourful summer festivals! It’s three days of fun as Caribbean Canadians share their music, cuisine and carnival culture! Local performers bring you amazing dance, music and fun. Bring Cariwest atmosphere into your home this year with these amazing online events.

Indigenous Festival

The annual Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival (SSIF) in Edmonton has done a wonderful job to make their annual off-line festival a number of online events this year because of COVID-19. These classes for which only a small fee will be charged include art workshops, book readings and museum tours.

Just 45 minutes from the heart of downtown Edmonton is the town of Stony Plain that works hard to keep ties to its agricultural background, and here you’ll see old-styled lamp posts and historical wall paintings with a long history everywhere. 4 . “The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence(篱笆).”That’s an old saying in English. It means that other places often look better, more interesting than the place where you live.“Let’s go to KFC for dinner and then watch some Japanese cartoons!”We all know it: more and more Chinese kids love American and Japanese food and movies. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring Chinese culture and, instead, buying Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.

Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that the Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with the Mid-Autumn Festival. China has lots of cool things in its culture: calligraphy, Beijing Opera, quick meals on the streets, and even Jay Chou! And let's not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best: its friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.

It’s good to enjoy other cultures and to learn from them, but they can never replace your own culture. It’s good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn’t always greener.

Although some people become worried about that, I don’t think they should. Will we get more powerful without learning from other countries? Will Chinese people live more happily without American fast food? Besides, it's fun to learn about different cultures. Chinese kids can learn about other cultures and have fun, but they also need to learn more about their own culture. Be proud of Chinese culture and of being Chinese!

1. The author thinks young Chinese ________.
A.are ignoring our own cultureB.are foolish in learning our own culture
C.are interested in our own cultureD.are hating our own culture
2. In some young Chinese’s eyes, which of the following is not the “greener grass”?
A.Japanese cartoon books.B.Korean soap operas.
C.The Mid-Autumn Festival.D.Christmas.
3. In the author's opinion, what is the best feature of Chinese culture?
A.Hard-working.B.Friendly.C.Brave.D.Honest.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Chinese culture and western cultureB.Simple young Chinese
C.Interesting western cultureD.That grass is not always greener

6 . It’s Earth’s birthday! The Earth is about 4.5 billion years old! In honour of our planet, former U. S. Senator Gaylord Nelson decided we needed a special day to celebrate and learn how to care for our environment. He wrote letters to many schools about the day he planned because he knew kids like you would help.

On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day was held. Many environmental laws were passed, and people all over the country made promises to protect the environment.

Since then, Earth Day has spread around the world and people are working together to create cleaner air and energy to take care of Mother Nature. Learn how you, your family and friends can start making a difference too!

Earth Day is now celebrated by hundreds of millions of people in more than 180 countries. Here are some ways that you can help re-energize the Earth and celebrate too!

·Visit a nature conservancy(保护协会). Nature conservancies teach us how to preserve our natural history.

·Have an Earth Day block party! Invite neighbourhood kids to plant gardens or trees or pick up trash. Then celebrate your achievements with some Earth Day’ treats and nature music.

·Challenge your family to “go green”. Walk, bicycle, carpool or take the bus to reduce greenhouse gases and get outdoors!

·Wear green, a nature or Earth Day T-shirt to help spread the word about caring for our environment.

·Make a “planet promise” to reduce your energy use and recycle.

We hope you’ll use some of these ideas during the week of April 22 to celebrate and give back to the Earth that gives so much to us.

China and Western country may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals. But when it comes to pigs, we somehow reach an agreement that pigs are lazy, ugly, stupidly and shameless. Neither of these words describing pigs are exactly positive. Moreover, the truth is what pigs have some good qualities. And there’s probably no good time to clear their names than now, with the arrival of the Year of the Pig on Chinese Spring Festival, which fell February 5 this year. According to a paper publishing in 2017, pigs can tell between those who treat them well or those who don’t. Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep it in mind—their intelligence, cuteness and patience.
