1 . World No Tobacco Day is celebrated each 31st of May. The aim is to bring attention to the growing use of tobacco and its deadly effects. The World Health Assembly established the event in 1987. This year, special attention is being given to the harmful effects of tobacco marketing to women and girls.

The WHO says the tobacco industry has increasingly directed its marketing campaigns at women and girls. Study shows that women currently represent about twenty percent of smokers while tobacco use among girls is increasing. Data collected from 151 countries show that about seven percent of young girls now smoke. That compares with twelve percent of boys. In some countries, however, the rates are almost equal.

Almost 170 countries have signed an agreement called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control which calls on those governments to ban tobacco advertising to the fullest to protect women. The agreement seeks to reduce the demand and supply of tobacco products. This year marks the fifth anniversary since the treaty went into effect. Up to now, eighty percent of the signers have banned the sale of tobacco products to young people. Seventy percent have required health warnings on tobacco products.

Events are planned in a number of countries to mark World No Tobacco Day. Many of the events are aimed at persuading people, especially the young, not to start smoking. Others aim to educate people about the many health benefits of giving up smoking.

The World Health Organization says tobacco kills nearly five and a half million people a year and has become a top cause of death worldwide. It is estimated that so far in the world one billion people smoke. More than eighty percent of tobacco users live in low and middle income countries. 2 . In 2011, the old style Malta buses were taken off the road and replaced by modern vehicles. Most of the old buses were deserted, a few were sold, and about 100 of them were put into storage in the hope of showing them in a museum at some stage.

A pre-2011 visit to Malta wouldn’t have been complete without a ride on one of the colorful buses. Until 1973 you could tell the destination of the bus just by looking at its color — Sliema was green and white, Zabbar was red and white with a blue stripe(条纹)etc. . Later, the buses all had numbers. For a while, they were all painted green and white before the ‘final’ orange, yellow and white.

In their prime, walking around the Triton fountain at the Valletta bus station, you would have found it very difficult to see two buses of exactly the same design. Most of them had locally built bodies. On the front of the buses carried names like Dodge, Leyland, Bedford etc. . You were equally likely to find football pennants(锦旗)and the like decorating the cabs. Real bus experts would have recognized that these were there mainly for decorative reasons, and were seldom an accurate reflection of the vehicle’s origins.

Nowadays much more modern buses are to be found at the Floriana bus station. They are more environmentally friendly and possibly even more comfortable than the older types. However, I miss the old buses. I remember, when you boarded your bus, you had to prepare the correct change to pay the usually bad-tempered driver as you got on. If you were seated anywhere near the front, you would have noticed that most drivers sat well to the right of their steering wheel. The reason for this, as any Maltese would tell you, was to leave space for their pet to sit alongside them. I wonder where the pet sits these days.

1. What makes a pre-2011 visit to Malta special according to Paragraph 2?
A.Traveling in colorful buses.
B.Using buses with stripes.
C.Painting buses bright colors.
D.Telling destinations by different colors.
2. Which of the following best explains “prime” underlined in Paragraph 3?
A.Painful time.B.Exciting time.
C.Moment of fantasy.D.Moment of glory.
3. What can we learn about Malta buses when they were popular?
A.They were of the same pattern.
B.The decorations reflected their origin.
C.Most were uniquely designed.
D.Only football pennants decorated the cabs.
4. How would the author feel about the old style Malta buses?
A.Comfortable.B.Environment-friendly.
C.Safe.D.Memorable.

5 . Is it true that British people have a different sense of humor than people in other countries? Let’s have a look at what we laugh at in Britain.

1     It’s not just politicians who make us laugh, but anyone whose job is to tell other people what to do and who takes themselves too seriously.

We laugh at authority, but also sympathetically laugh with anyone who we think is treated badly.     2     Our clowns are often silly people doing silly things—Mr Bean, for example—while in America, they are often clever people doing clever things and winning.

The fact that we laugh when other people might feel hopeless is one of the oddest things to appreciate about British humor. We do have a strong sense of irony (反讽). “Not very pleasant,” we might say after some terrible experience.     3     “It’s a bit windy today” we might say in the middle of a typhoon, or “There’s a slight problem,” when something has gone very seriously wrong.     4

Another thing that can make it difficult to understand British humor is that we don’t always laugh or even smile when we say something funny.     5

Do you think the British sense of humor is unique?

A.In addition,we tend to play things down.
B.We often keep a straight face even when we’re making a joke.
C.Culture plays a big part in how funny you may find something.
D.We know they can’ t win,but if they do so sometimes,it’s even funnier.
E.Brits don’t express extreme feelings;we just“keep calm and carry on”.
F.Brits turn to laughter as a form of medicine when life knocks them down.
G.To the British, powerful and important people are often sources of laughter.

7 . Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said, “The British are the only people who like to be told how bad things are.” This is definitely (绝对地) true of British comedy. Most people think humor is about happy things, but for the British, the opposite is true. We love to use our cruel sense of humor to complain and be negative (消极的).

British comedy, for example, draws a fine line between comedy and tragedy (悲剧). BBC’s The Office is a TV show, famous for its dry humor. The main character, David Brent, is a foolish man, and the show’s comedy comes from his delusions. For example, he often tells himself that he is loved by everyone but the viewer can see that everyone hates him.

Stupid characters for the audience to laugh at are an old tradition in Britain. In Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night, the character Malvolio is an old man whom people play tricks on. The audience will laugh away, although the reality is that this man is a truly tragic individual (个体).

This side of British humor is reflected (反映) in friendships as well. At university, my friends and I would always laugh at one another. I had an American friend who actually found this sarcasm (挖苦) quite upsetting. She didn’t realize that in Britain, the better friends you are with someone, the more you laugh at them.

This approach – laughing at everything – may sound rather depressing (让人郁闷的), but our strange humor played a big part in British history. In World War II, along with a stiff upper lip (坚定沉着), the British got through it by laughing. What else was there to do?

There is a saying in English: “Laugh and the world laughs with you; cry and you cry alone.” If you are ever on the receiving end of British sarcasm, you may feel like crying, but it’s best to just laugh it off!

1. How is British comedy different from other types?
A.It is often surprising and boring.
B.It often laughs at human nature.
C.It is often about negative things.
D.It often makes people feel depressed.
2. What does the underlined word “delusions” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.strong abilities
B.fun characters
C.incorrect beliefs
D.deep confidence
3. Why is Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night mentioned in the article?
A.To show one of the best examples of British comedy.
B.To explain how Shakespeare’s comedy is different.
C.To show how difficult it is to make people accept British comedy.
D.To prove Britain has a long tradition of laughing at stupid characters.
4. How does the author advise people to react to British humor?
A.Learn from it.
B.Don’t take it seriously.
C.Reply sarcastically.
D.Be careful not to make stupid mistakes.
