5 . Many of China's ancient architectural treasures smashed(粉碎)to dust before Lin Huiyin and Liang Sicheng began documenting them in the 1930s. The husband and wife team were among the first preservationists to operate in China, and by far the best known. Their efforts have since inspired generations of people to speak out for architecture threatened by the rush toward development.

Becoming China's best architectural historians was no easy accomplishment. The buildings they wanted to save were centuries old located in distant parts of the country. In many cases, they had to journey through tough conditions in the Chinese countryside to reach them. Exploring China's remote areas during the 1930s meant traveling muddy, poorly maintained roads by mule(骡子)or on foot. Inns often provided food that could be polluted, and there was always risk from wild animals.

Their greatest discovery was the Temple of Buddha's Light, in Wutai County, Shanxi Province. The construction of the breathtaking wooden temple began in 471 AD, making it the oldest building known in China at the time.

Liang and Lin crawled into the temple's most forbidden, forgotten areas to determine its age, including one hideaway controlled by thousands of bats and millions of bedbugs(臭虫), covered in dust and littered with dead bats. "In complete darkness and among the awful smell, hardly breathing, with thick masks covering our noses and mouths, we measured, drew, and photographed with flashlights for several hours. When at last we came out to take a breath of fresh air, we found hundreds of bedbugs in our bag. We ourselves had been badly bitten. Yet the importance and unexpectedness of our find made those the happiest hours of my years hunting for ancient architecture.” Liang wrote of the experience in an account included in Liang and Lin: Partners in Exploring China's Architectural Past.

3. While exploring the Temple of Buddha's Light, Liang and Lin __________.
A.caught insects with an awful smellB.were forbidden to use flashlights

C.The reason why Liang and Lin began their exploration
D.The difficulties China's architectural historians are facing

9 . Fathers Day is a day to thank fathers for all the love and support they give to their children. It is celebrated on different dates in different countries. Some countries like the US, the UK, Canada and India celebrate this festival on the third Sunday of June.

Many men didn't like the creation of Father's Day though. They laughed at the holiday's sentimental attempts to celebrate Father's Day with flowers and gift-giving, and they laughed at the creation of such holidays as a commercial trick to sell more products - often paid for by the father himself.

During the 1920s and 1930s, in the US there was a movement to promote the combination of Mother's Day with Father's Day to be a new holiday, Parents' Day. Every year on Mother's Day, Parents' Day supporters would gather in New York City's Central Park to remind the public that both parents should be loved and respected.

However, this attempt failed due to the Great Depression. Struggling retailers(零售商)and advertisers made more efforts to make Father's Day a"second Christmas" for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards.

When World War II started, advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father's Day was a way to honor American troops and support the war. By the end of the war, Father's Day may not have been a federal holiday, but it was a national event. In 1972, in the middle of a hard-fought presidential re-election campaign, Richard Nixon signed an announcement making Father's Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than SI billion each year on Father's Day gifts.

A.They thought it was a"second Christmas"for men.
B.They hated flowers and gift-giving.

D.They thought it was too sentimental for men and it was a commercial trick.
2. Why weren't Father's Day and Mother's Day combined as one holiday?
A.Because of the Great Depression.
B.Some men were not in favor of it.
C.Some women were not in favor of it.
D.Businessmen made their efforts to prevent it.
3. What made Father's Day a national event?
A.Parents' Day supporters movement.
B.The Great Depression.
C.The presidential re-election campaign.
D.Advertisers promotion during World WarⅡ.
4. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Father's Day: Its Orign and Development.
