The smell of popcorn is carried on the fresh and pleasant wind blowing off the lake. Duluth is a city full of sights, smells, and sounds. My family visits it often, but each time it is a new adventure.

Duluth, Minnesota, was founded in 1870. Located at the southeast corner of the St. Louis County, on Lake Superior, Duluth is the third largest city in Minnesota, with a population of 86, 918. It was named after Daniel Sieur Du Lhut, a French explorer.

Native American settlements were first found in the area by French explorers in the late 1600s. Soon after, Duluth became an important trade and shipping center for the timber (木材) industry. In 1865, iron was discovered, making Duluth a major ore (矿石) shipping point. When the St. Lawrence Seaway opened in 1959, it became one of the Great Lakes’ leading ports for exporting grain.

Tourism is very important to Duluth. People are attracted to its natural scenery, as well as the museums, zoos, and of course, the many gift shops downtown. Duluth is the home of the Great Lakes Aquarium, which is the only all­freshwater aquarium in the United States. However, the Aerial Lift Bridge is the thing that most people want to see when they visit. Standing nearly 400 feet tall, it is a spectacular feat (功绩) of engineering. The Lake Superior Maritime Museum, where you’ll find more about ore boats, the lift bridge, and other things, is just a short walk away from the bridge. If you visit Duluth in the winter, you can go to Spirit Mountain to ski or snowboard.

8 . Long Walks in Europe

The Waldstätterweg Route is one of the safest when it comes to snowy conditions, and the views and the colours of the trees are breathtaking at the end of October. This seven-stage route spreads to the shore of Lake Lucerne, with the glaring blue water being a constant companion. Old paths and elegant routes through woods link lakeside settlements.

The Harz Mountains have long been associated with German folklore (民俗). Harz Witches Route runs along forest tracks through Harz National Park and can be walked throughout October and beyond. The route takes in forests, Germany’s largest wooden church, and a 439-metre rope suspension bridge. It also follows the poet Goethe’s hiking route up the Brocken.

Autumn isn’t just a good time to walk in Andalucía. The weather stays warm long after winter starts to bite further north. It’s cheaper and less crowded, too. In November, conditions are milder here and some plants continue to flower. And two newly created GR routes begin here: both are well marked, reasonably challenging, divided into six stages and walkable in a week.

The Menalon Route is an excellent option for autumn. Temperatures are pleasant and autumn colours are wonderful well into November. It’s a quiet time to visit, too. Nights in mountain villages are a highlight. Dimitsana, surrounded by snowy peaks, is a particular jewel. In Stemnitsa, there is a folklore museum showing the village’s jewellery-making heritage.

The Zhagana village in Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture, Gansu province, was recently named Best Tourism Village of 2023 by the United Nations World Tourism Organization.

Zhagana, which means “stone box” in the Tibetan language, is located at an altitude of 3,000 to 3,300 meters and is surrounded by mountains, with the highest peak reaching 4,500 meters. The steep mountains and Tibetan-style houses constitute a “grand stone palace” or an ancient city constructed by natural rock walls.

Xiajiang village, located in East China’s Zhejiang province, has earned a prestigious spot on the UNWTO’s list of “Best Tourism Villages.” This idyllic village is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty and a profound cultural heritage that spans from traditional folk culture to historical “red culture”.

As a mountain dwelling village in Wuyuan county of East China’s Jiangxi province, Huangling has transformed from a poverty-stricken village into a rural tourism hot spot.

The village, rated as a national AAAA scenic spot (the second highest level for tourist attractions in China), draws worldwide visitors throughout the year to view its picturesque landscape.

Zhujiawan village, situated in Zhashui county, Shangluo city, covers a sprawling area of 126 square kilometers and boasts an abundance of over 1,200 species of diverse animals and plant resources. The village’s cultural tapestry is vibrant, showcasing 25 intangible cultural treasures, including the Zhashui Fish Drum and traditional brewing practices.
