文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文,讲述了作者出国旅游喜欢参观杂货店的经历,作者认为杂货店是一个更好地了解当地人民和国家的社交好地方。

2 . The grocery store might not be your favorite place to visit when you’re at home, but isn’t it ever fun when you’re in another country? Honestly speaking, they’re one of those strange little destinations that I like to sniff out everywhere I go, much as other travellers head toward clothing stores, libraries, cafés or galleries.

The biggest beauty of the grocery store—whether it’s a huge supermarket or a tiny one—is that it gives you a glimpse into what local people buy to cook. This offers clues into their lifestyles and preferences, and into the agricultural and cooking practices of the country. I stare at the strange fruits and vegetables, the seafood, the cheese, the spices, the breads, and oh, the chocolate... always the chocolate!

Being an environmental nerd ( 痴 迷 者 ) I am, I like paying attention to packaging, which can reflect their attitude towards environmental protection. Italy, for example, has a habit of requiring customers to bag their fruits and vegetables in plastic for weighing, while Sri Lanka leaves everything loose in bins. In Brazil, everything is prepackaged in a layer of plastic.

People in grocery stores tend to be friendlier. They smile, say hello, and sometimes ask questions, which can lead to great conversations. I had a further discussion with a teen-aged cashier in Sri Lanka, over which bag of crunchy mix to buy. He insisted that the one labeled ‘spicy’ would be too hot for me, but I told him I was willing to risk it. He laughed and we ended up talking about my favorite Sri Lankan foods for ten minutes.

The financial savings extend to souvenirs, too. Whether it is ground spices for my mom or chocolates for my kids, the grocery store is the first place I look for unique gifts. It’s interesting then to come home and look at one’s own local grocery store through new eyes. What would a visitor think? What stands out, and what do the food displays say about us as a culture? You might be surprised by what you realize.

1. What is the benefit of visiting grocery stores of other countries in the author’s opinion?
A.Knowing their financial practice.
B.Making friends with store owners.
C.Buying cheaper food and souvenirs.
D.Knowing local people and the country.
2. Why does the author mention some countries she visited?
A.To show their strange lifestyles.
B.To show the levels of their wealth.
C.To show their packaging advantages.
D.To show their environmental awareness.
3. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A.Sri Lankans tend to become friendlier.
B.Grocery stores are always social places.
C.People like to share their ideas about food.
D.More cultures can be learned in grocery stores.
4. What would the author probably suggest readers doing?
A.Visiting grocery stores while travelling.
B.Buying cultural souvenirs in foreign countries.
C.Knowing the grocery culture before travelling.
D.Exchanging shopping experience with friends.

3 . I was fortunate to spend every summer camping with my parents when I was a kid. By the age of 18, I’d visited every province in my home country of Canada. Even today I can still recall an impressive tour vividly.

It took us six people a long time to drive to Newfoundland from Ontario. When we arrived on the island, it poured rain every day. We just kept driving north, hoping to outrun it. We jumped on a ferry to Labrador Peninsula, crossing the Strait of Belle Isle, and moved our way up the coast of this northerly and thinly-populated region.

The scenery in Labrador is beautiful. We saw long white sand beaches along the Atlantic coast that looked inviting, but the water was cold year-round. While standing at the top of a lighthouse, my dad said, “This will be the new Caribbean once global warming hits.”

We soon discovered Battle Harbor, a historic fishing village that can only be reached by ferry. In the mid-1800s it had a population of 350 people and was considered the unofficial capital of Labrador. Now it was more like a deserted town, and I distinctly remember feeling the furthest from anything that I’ve ever felt. Multiple ferry rides and 600 miles separated me from the nearest major city of St. John’s.

If you’re curious about Newfoundland & Labrador (NL), I highly recommend a 2013 film called The Grand Seduction. It’s a delightful comedy about a small fishing village called Tickle Head that’s struggling to figure out its future.

Travelling made me get to know my country so well, which has had a tremendous influence on shaping the person I am now. I hold a solid mental picture of Canada, stretching from sea to sea, which I’ve taken with me to other parts of the world because I have great passion for it.

1. Which of the following was the author’s tour route?
A.Ontario — Newfoundland — Battle Harbor — Labrador Peninsula.
B.Ontario — the Strait of Belle Isle — Newfoundland — Labrador Peninsula.
C.Ontario — Newfoundland — the Strait of Belle Isle — Labrador Peninsula.
D.Labrador Peninsula — the Strait of Belle Isle — Newfoundland — Ontario.
2. What does the author think of Battle Harbor?
A.It is naturally appealing.
B.It is remote and lonely.
C.It gives a sense of belonging.
D.It is unique and peaceful.
3. Why does the author recommend the movie The Grand Seduction?
A.It is mostly set in NL.
B.It describes NL in detail.
C.It offers clues to NL’s situations.
D.It implies NL’s promising future.
4. How does the author’s travelling influence him?
A.He loves his country better.
B.He has a passion for the sea.
C.He is more open to new cultures.
D.He holds a solid picture of his future.

6 . Fishing trips to Canada are a tradition for Jeffrey Hardy and his three friends from America. This summer in 2023, the forest air polluted with wildfire smoke forced the men to give up their mid-June fishing plan. Canada’s wildfire season put its tourism industry at a crucial time.

Except some days of poor air quality, major Canadian cities remain unaffected by wildfires. The fires are in the country’s northern areas that have drawn travelers interested in outdoor experiences in years past.

In a recent report by Destination Canada, a marketing organization, half of the total spent by international visitors is in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. But other Canadian destinations attractive to visitors have been affected by the wildfires.

In preparation for increasing visitor sizes and ongoing wildfires, some businesses are thinking about changing their operations, which see outdoor recreation (娱乐) as a tourism opportunity. A nonprofit travel agency is considering creating a questionnaire (调查问卷) for customers to show when they would cancel a booking because of road closes from the wildfires, poor air quality and a lack of visibility.

Tourism in British Columbia contributes greatly to its economy. The province has various recreational offerings, from the major ski destinations to hiking along the coast. Blackcomb, a helicopter tour company, has canceled its sightseeing offerings, using most of its helicopters on the firefighting effort until at least early August. “It’s the question of flying our customers around on sightseeing tours or putting out fire s within 10 kilometers of our bases and the communities that we live in,” said Jordy Norris, the company’s tourism director. “We made it clear to both our staff and our customers that we have a duty to protect the backyard.”

Darrin Rigo, a photographer, recently saw a photo of a beautiful waterfall engulfed in fire on a media page. “I’m sure that’s not going to last long, and everything will turn to normal.” he said.

8 . China has seen a boom in glamping, a combination of “glamorous (迷人的)” and “camping”, since 2020.

Camping, in earlier years, was mostly for those exploring the rough outdoors. The equipment they used was more for survival than for enjoyment. The image of camping thus was a pretty tough one.

Urban explorers, in recent years, have turned their sights to camping as they grew tired of hotel-stay travel style. The views of tents in a grassland or by a river soon attracted growing public interest in camping. Facilities that allow people to get close to nature while still able to enjoy the comforts of modern luxury have given wings to glamping.

There are many glamping grounds where facilities are ready to use. People just need to buy a ticket to get in and don’t have to buy any further equipment. It is suitable for new campers who want to get some experience of spending time outdoors.

Zhang Zheming, a photographer in Beijing, got his first taste of glamping in June2019 at a campground in suburban Beijing. It was a very spacious site and campers needed to bring their own kits (装备).

Zhang and his wife brought their 4-year-old son with them. As they didn’t have any experience in picking the right equipment, they didn’t prepare the canopy (遮阳篷), a camping must to protect oneself from strong sunlight. But this didn’t affect their first experience.

“In the past, my wife and I only chose to stay at hotels while traveling,” he said. “We are very happy to have discovered glamping and it is also a new way of socializing. My son used to be a shy boy, but now he gets along quite well with other people.”

Zhang is also surprised to see how popular glamping has become. The first time he went there in 2019, only 500 people joined in. But when he went there for the second time in 2020, he saw over 5,000 people.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了肯塔基州的一个洞穴公园的具体情况。

9 . Mammoth Cave National Park, in the state of Kentucky, is a unique and historical natural wonder. It has the world’s longest cave system. There may be another 600 miles of cave passageways that have yet to be explored. In addition, more than 200 caves that are disconnected from the larger system can be found in the park.

The underground caves were created naturally by the process of limestone (石灰岩) erosion. Rain and rivers slowly dissolve (溶解) and shape soft limestone. The system is still being shaped today. Not only are they an amazing destination to visit, but the system also provides drinking water for about 40% of the US population.

The caves’ first explorers were Native Americans, who mined (采矿) the upper levels of Mammoth Cave. Later, the sites were left in great shape and began to draw public interest.

Mammoth Cave was made into a national park thanks to strong support. Back in the 1920s, the Southern Appalachian National Park Commission was set up in 1925. After years of work, as well as building roads and public facilities, the park was completed on July 1, 1941.

The park now receives around 2 million visitors a year, with about a quarter taking a tour of the caves—everything from a cultural tour to the more adventurous tours on offer. The cave supports more than 130 wildlife species (物种). The park is also much more than just a cave; the forest around has a diverse (多种多样的) range of species. There are miles of trails open for horseback riding, with canoe trails and great fishing spots. There are also more than 1,300 flowering species in the forest, and animals like wood warblers, thrushes, and bald eagles can regularly be seen.
