EL Ateneo Grand Splendid

Buenos Aires, Argentina

This theater-turned-cinema-turned-bookstore is an example of the connection between the performing arts and books. It preserves the traditional ceiling and special curtains of the former theater and books line the walls, including where the audience once sat in box seats.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章列举了古代和现代人们旅行的目的和旅行的好处,说明旅行能丰富我们的头脑。

8 . People who like travelling have their reasons. They believe that travelling can help them expand their field of view, especially in the geographical and historical sense. They also think that touring will give them more chances to enjoy different kinds of food and experience new things that would never be brought by other activities. But those who dislike travelling also have some reasons.

Travelling, in my opinion, does more good than harm. Most importantly, it broadens our mind. We can get in touch with other civilizations(文明), cultures, customs and ideas.

Through history, most people travelled because of necessity (必要性)—not for pleasure. People travelled just in order to remain alive. They searched for food to eat or places to live in. They sometimes ran away from enemies. This is not to say that no one ever travelled just for the fun of it. In ancient times, for example, rich Romans travelled all the way to Greece to take part in the Olympic Games, and festivals. Of course, some people decided to travel just out of curiosity. They wanted to find out what it looked like beyond the horizon (地平线). Also business travel has been going on for centuries. Traders could not only make money but also learn to speak several languages and be introduced to different cultures.

So, travelling does enrich our mind and draw new ideas to us. There is no doubt that we can get much from it.

1. According to the passage, in the past most people travelled          .
A.for fun
B.for knowledge
C.to get experiences
D.to make a living
2. How many reasons for travelling are mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.Three.
B.Four.
C.Five.
D.Six.

C.helpful
D.tiring
4. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A.Different kinds of travelling.

C.Ways to enjoy yourself while travelling.
D.The advantages and disadvantages of travelling.

9 . Now many young people are travelling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.

Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it was something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.

In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.

Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30year-old.

Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said: “The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I'm dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”

The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said: “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”

1. Why is it challenging to travel alone?
A.It will finally build your character.
B.You have to make things on your own.
C.It is hard for you to prove yourself to others.
D.You depend on yourself whatever happens.
2. Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?
A.Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.
B.It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
C.It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
D.Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
3. What can we infer about Chris Richardson?
A.He started traveling at an early age.
B.He was once shot in the arm.
C.He used to work as a salesman.
D.His website inspires others a lot.
4. What is the best title for other passage?
A.Travel Wide and Far
B.Travel Unaccompanied
C.Travel Light
D.Travel Abroad
