文章大意:这是一篇应用文。主要介绍了四个欧洲最容易步行探索的城市。

1 . If you’re able to, wandering the streets of a new city on foot is an unrivalled way to take in all the sights and sounds. And there’s no denying that walking is a much more eco (and wallet) friendly form of transport, too. To help you get out and explore, language learning platform Preply has ranked Europe’s most walkable cities. They analyzed the walking distance between top attractions and now reveal which cities in Europe are the easiest to explore on foot.

Seville, Spain

Visitors to this charming Spanish city can explore the impressive Plaza de Espana public square, before wandering over to the UNESCO-listed palace of Real Alcazar and Seville Cathedral. With just 20 minutes of walking between these attractions, you can really make the most of your time here.

Venice, Italy

Venice is renowned as a heaven for pedestrians, so it’s no surprise it ranks as the second best location for walkable city breaks. There are endless attractive alleyways to explore, as well as plenty of stunningly ornate (华丽的) bridges over the crisscrossing canals that the city is famed for. Just under half an hour of walking here will take you on a tour of the impressive Grand Canal, Doge’s Palace, St Mark’s Square and so on, all in only 1.3 miles.

Florence, Italy

In only 33 minutes, visitors can take in the splendor of Florence’s top-tier destinations. A 1.6 mile route covers the awe-inspiring Piazzale Michelangelo; the renowned Uffizi Gallery; and the Galleria dell’ Accademia, home to Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the statue of David.

Athens, Greece

The capital of Greece ranks in fourth, with a slightly longer — but very worthwhile — route of 2.1 miles between its top-rated tourist attractions. Visitors to Athens can begin their journey at the Acropolis, ascending to discover the ancient Parthenon that stands as a testament to the city’s ancient legacy. The National Archaeological Museum is also close-by.

1. How has Preply ranked the four cities?
A.By the number of the tourist attractions.B.By the expenses of traveling in the cities.
C.By the popularity among the young visitors.D.By the walking distance between attractions.
2. Which city is the best for the visitors to explore the bridges over the canals?
A.Seville.B.Venice.C.Florence.D.Athens.
3. Where can you find the statue of David?
A.Seville Cathedral.B.St Mark’s Square.
C.The Galleria dell’ Accademia.D.The Acropolis.

文章大意:本文是一篇应用文,主要介绍了面向儿童的We The Curious科学博物馆的相关信息。

2 . We The Curious

Formerly known as At-Bristol, this harbourside science museum relaunched in 2017 as We The Curious to better reflect its mission to get kids to ask questions and engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Stem subjects) in creative ways.

Best things about it

My kids don’t shy away from telling me if they think a museum is boring but here they were too busy rushing from one hands-on exhibit to the next to have any such complaint. They dressed up as bees to catch pollen (花粉) made cheese, watched ice form, weighed human brains and stretched out strips of DNA to compare the genetic sequence (基因序列) of a monkey and an armadillo.

Value for money?

Given that the science museums in London, Manchester and Newcastle are free, it does jar (不一致) having to pay £14.50 for adults and £9.50 for kids (aged 3—15) to get in. Kids under 3 are free. I did have to push them out the door at the end of the day. Weeks on, they still refer back to things they learnt there.

Getting there

We The Curious is near the National Cycle Network (routes 3, 4, and 33). The museum has lots of bicycle parking. Alternatively, it’s a 10-minute walk from Bristol Temple Meads railway station or a five-minute taxi ride or 17-minute ferry ride. If driving, follow the We The Curious brown signs and park at the Millennium Square car park for free.

Opening hours

Monday to Friday 10 am—5 pm, 10 am-6 pm at weekends and Bristol school holidays; closed 24—26 December.

1. What highlights We The Curious?
A.A long and splendid history.B.Mental health support for children.
C.Educational and fun activities.D.A hands-on products exhibition.
2. How much would a couple with their 5-year-old twin sons pay for admission?
A.£29.B.£33.5.C.£38.5.D.£48.
3. What do we learn from the passage?
A.It charges parking fees.B.It opens all year round.
C.It is conveniently located.D.It offers many types of bikes.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。作者讲述了自己因为无法忍受反复听磁带里的歌曲,开始在旅行的车里阅读,后来这发展成为家庭传统,为一家人带来乐趣,让旅程更加轻松愉快的故事。

3 . My motivation for starting our family tradition of reading in the car was purely selfish: I could not bear listening to A Sesame Street Christmas for another 10 hours. My three children had been addicted to this cassette on our previous summer’s road trip.

As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip, I came across a book — Jim Trelease’s The Read Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem, I thought. So I put Roald Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach, my three kids argued and wrestled in their seats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began to listen.

We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long miles pass more quickly. Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip. I read Wilson Rawls’s Summer of the Monkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach. We arrived just behind the power crews restoring (恢复) electricity after a tropical storm. The rain continued most of the week, and the beach was covered with oil washed up by the storm. When we returned home, I asked my son what he liked about the trip. He answered without hesitation, “The book you read in the car.”

Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue to read as we roll across the country. And I’m beginning to see that reading aloud has done more than help pass the time. For at least a little while, we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.

1. Why did the author start reading in the car?
A.She wanted to have a better journey.
B.She wanted to keep a family tradition.
C.Her children were addicted to reading.
D.Children were tired of the cassette.
2. How did the children react after the author read a few lines?
A.They kept fighting.B.They hid themselves.
C.They soon settled down.D.They read together aloud.
3. What can we learn about the author and her family’s trip to the beach?
A.They were caught in a storm.
B.They enjoyed reading on the road.
C.They had a good time on the beach.
D.They thought it had passed too quickly.
4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Better Traveling than Reading
B.Books that Changed My Children
C.Road Trips Full of Challenges
D.Reading Makes Great Road Trips

4 . Japan’s biggest airline is betting that the future of travel isn’t traveling at all. For the last month, a married couple has been interacting with a robot—called an Avatar—that’s controlled by their daughter hundreds of miles away. Made by ANA Holdings Inc., it looks like a vacuum cleaner with an iPad attached. But the screen displays the daughter’s face as they chat, and its wheels let her move about the house as though she’s really there.

“Virtual travel” is nothing new, of course. Story-tellers, travel writers and artists have been stimulating the senses of armchair tourists for centuries. It’s only in recent decades that frequent, safe travel has become available to the non-wealthy. Yet even as the world’s middle classes climb out of the armchair and into economy-class seat, there are signs of a post-travel society emerging. Concerns about environmental sustainability cause loss to airlines which release much carbon. And the aging of abundant societies is both restricting physical travel and creating demand for alternative ways to experience the world. For the travel industry, virtual reality offers an attractive response to these trends.

Of course, new technologies encourage far-out claims. ANA doesn’t plan to start selling Avatars until next year. Profits, too, will probably be difficult to make: By one estimate, the global market for this kind of technology will be worth only about $300 million by 2023. By contrast, ANA’s traditional travel business brought in more than $19 billion last year.

But if the business value for virtual vacations is still weak, the market for technologies that bridge physical distances between families and coworkers seems likely to only expand. ANA’s robots may not replace its airplanes any time soon, but they’ll almost certainly be a part of travel’s high-tech future.

1. What is the function of Para. 1?
A.To show that Japanese are crazy about travel.
B.To suggest the couple are very satisfied with the robot.
C.To indicate virtual travel begins to enter people’s real life.
D.To express the close relationship between the couple and their daughter.
2. What is the reason for the appearance of the post-travel society?
A.More and more people lose interest in travel.
B.People are worried about the air pollution caused by airlines.
C.Frequent and safe travel has become available to the ordinary people.
D.Storytellers, travel writers and artists have been using it for centuries.
3. According to the passage, what is the possible future of Avatars?
A.They will be put on the market soon.
B.They will bring ANA a lot of money.
C.They will replace ANA’s airplanes soon.
D.They are almost unavoidable in travel’s future.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Easy travel is on the way.B.Your next travel may be virtual.
C.Benefits of virtual travel.D.Disappearance of air travel.

Glasgow Riverside Transport Museum

The museum houses steam engines, motorbikes, Glasgow buses and just about anything else that has a set of wheels, wrings or sails. One of the last tall ships in existence is moored (停泊) outside, and you can take a boat there from Govan. For those not in love with transport, there’s a copy of a 19th-century Glasgow street with traditional shops and an old subway station.

Entrance is free and for children of all ages.

The Natural History Museum, Hertfordshire

The Victorians were mad about collecting, and this is essentially the personal collection of just one home-educated boy, which began when he was 5 years old. But as a member of the Rothschild family, Walter took 40 years to do it. There’s just about every stuffed animal you could ever imagine, and quite a few you couldn’t: a polar bear; George, a mandrill (山魈) from London Zoo and a four-ton elephant seal.

Entrance is free.

The Pencil Museum1, Cumbria

It is a museum all about the history of the everyday pencil. There are free daily artists’ demonstrations and workshops, so you can enter from one end of the museum and go out with a drawing from another end. The lovely Lake District location adds to the experience and the wonderful shop is especially enjoyable for stationery (文具) lovers.

Entrance: adults £8, children £6.

The Time Machine Museum of Science Fiction, Hertfordshire
