1 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Antarctica is the center of important scientific research. However, with an increasing number of day, scientists have to leave their work to greet a group of tourists who are taking a vacation in this continent of ice. Even though their desire to enjoy this vast and beautiful landscape can be appreciated, Antarctica should be closed to tourists.

Tourists in Antarctica can damage scientific research and hurt the environment. When tourist groups come, they take scientists away from their research. The work is difficult and some of the projects can be damaged by such simple mistakes as opening the wrong door or knocking against a small piece of equipment. In addition, tourists in Antarctica can also hurt the environment. Members of Greenpeace, one of the world’s leading environmental organizations, complain tourists leave trash on beaches and disturb the plants and animals. In a place as frozen as Antarctica, it can take one hundred years for a plant to grow back.

The need to protect Antarctica from tourists becomes even greater when we consider the fact that there is no government here. Antarctica belongs to no country. Who is making sure that the penguins, plants and sea are safe? No one is responsible. It is true that the number of tourists who visit Antarctica each year is smaller compared to the number of those who visit other places. However, these other places are controlled by local governments. They have an interest in protecting their natural environments. Who is concerned about the environment of Antarctica? The scientist, to be sure, but not necessarily the tour companies that make money from sending people south.

If we don’t protect Antarctica from tourism, there may be serious consequences for us all. We might lose the results of scientific research projects. It’s possible that these results could teach us something important about the causes and effects of climate change. Some fragile plants and animals might die and disappear forever. This could damage the balance of animal and plant life in Antarctica. We know from past experience that when things get unbalanced, harmful changes can occur.

My mother was the oldest child in a family of four children. At the age of ten, my mother was charged with all the household responsibilities while her mother went to work. At a time when most children focused on themselves and their needs, my mother looked after the other children, cooked, and cleaned. My aunts and uncle remember that while they were growing up my mother was consistent (始终如一的) and strict with them, with a smile on her face and a song in her heart.

After working for a couple of years, my mother married my father and started her own family. Her four children came every two years. In addition to working full-time, she managed to attend each child’s school and sporting events, and keep us all on the straight and narrow

Having learned about her hard childhood and knowing that my father was really her “fifth and worst” child, I decided that when l completed graduate school I would take my mother on the first of what would become our annual (一年一次的) mother-daughter trip. Since l landed a well-paid job, I told her to pick any place she wanted to go and I would make it happen. She had never been more than fifty miles from our home, so she was very excited.

For the first three years, we went to Bermuda, Arizona, and Charleston. However, during my fourth year after graduate school, I opened my own business, and I was very hard up. I didn't want my mother to know, so I didn’t let on when she said she wanted to go to the Bahamas

I searched for the least expensive way to make this trip happen and ended up with a “package” that included air tickets, food and hotel stays. Even now, when I think about that trip, I experience some discomfort. The old airplane was very tiny. We had to share the hotel room with local insects.

After a long flight and a terrible bus ride to our hotel, most passengers were tired and disappointed (失望的). However, my mother always kept a positive attitude.

Is “Virtual Reality Tourism” About to Take Off?

For many people, a trip to German’s fairytale-like Neuschwansein castle, or the pristine waters of the Maldives are a bucket list ambition. Plans for these and other international trips were brought to a sudden stop by the COVID-19 pandemic. Around the world, once-crowded sights largely at a standstill, with hotels empty and not a tourist in sight.

It’s predicted that travel will not return to pre-pandemic levels until 2024. In the absence of travellers, hotels and destinations have turned to virtual reality(VR) to keep would-be-visitors interested and prepare for the long road to recovery.

Faced with a new reality of depressed tourism, many believe that VR can stimulate a potential audience’s appetite. The further this pandemic goes on for, the higher the chance that VR may become an effective form of alternative travel as consumers get more used to this technology. In this environment, a number of countries have stepped up VR marketing efforts to prepare for the gradual recovery of their tourism industries. Among the most noticeable is Germany, which has unveiled a number of immersive projects to highlight the country’s potential as a travel destination. VR also helps to boost travellers’ confidence. As restrictions ease in the not-so-distant future, VR will be a vital tool in helping familiarize travellers with a new environment and help slowly rebuild consumer confidence. “As we start to recover, there will be some people that will be willing to travel like crazy. Younger people will be booking flights as soon as possible,” says Mr Flecha, a travel and hospitality expert for the multinational consulting firm Accenture.

We know technology is already changing how we travel, and its applications are essential elements in keeping interest in tourist spots alive during travel restrictions, getting potential customers excited about the products and providing inspiration for real world travel. Some, however, believe digital applications cannot, and are not intended to, replace the experience of real-world travel.

What Is Ecotourism?

You may not be very familiar with “ecotourism”—a new term in today’s tourism industry—but in an era of growing environmental consciousness, it is not too difficult for us to imagine and work out the meaning of this new form of holiday.

Ecotourism is typically defined as travel to places where the unique plants, animals and cultural heritage are the primary attractions. It is a kind of responsible tourism which seriously takes ecology and culture into consideration. Therefore, programmes involving the conservation and preservation of some natural and cultural sites also form a part of ecotourism.

Ever since the United Nations declared the year 2002 as the International Year of Ecotourism, this side of the tourist industry has developed at great speed. Over 80 activities have been listed for ecotourism, such as bird-watching, hiking, diving, photography, mountaineering and participating in various kinds of local cultural events. Now, according to some reports, ecotourism enjoys annual growth rates of about 15-20% worldwide.

People should be aware that sometimes what is called “ecotourism” may actually be “greenwashing”. This type of tourism aims to profit from the “ecotourism” label, where tourist resorts are built on nature reserves in ways that damage their surroundings. Of course, if this were true ecotourism, the tourist resorts would help—not hurt—the environment.

Big cities remain the major places that absorb tourists in our society today, but perhaps smaller towns and rural areas rich in ecological, cultural and historical resources will become the travel destinations of tomorrow.

For the Love of Travel and Food

I have always loved food. At home, I do the things that every foodie does. I regularly attend food festivals, cook elaborate five-course meals for my friends, watch Top Chef and dream of another life in which I might have become a chef.

However, it was not until five years ago when my husband and I travelled to South Africa that I combined my love for travel and food. South African cuisine is a mixture of many different subcultures. If we had only been there to see elephants, we would not have learned so much about the vast and dynamic (充满活力的) culture of the country through the food. Sure, we could have opened a textbook and read of the history that brought all of these cultures together, but we would not have experienced it firsthand and taken home all of those priceless memories. Until then, I had no idea the limitless benefits I would gain from travelling for food.

You are wondering how food can be powerful, right? It is simple. Eating uses all five senses. Not only do we taste our food, we also touch it, smell it, see it with our eyes and listen to it sizzle (咝咝作响) in the pan. We are in a heightened state of being whenever we interact with food. Personally, the taste of Malbec transports me to a tasting room (品酒室) in Argentina. The smell of lime (酸橙)instantly brings to mind the Thai cooking class I took in Chiang Mai. Even the sight of choclo(really large corn)gets me excited for the intense flavours of Peruvian (秘鲁的) food.

You see, food has the ability to shape your journeys and define your memories. Food is also an essential part of life and community. It is what makes us who we are as a people. I read a lot of travel articles about how to save money on food while travelling and how to avoid street food so as not to get sick. I seriously question whether you can experience the authentic (正宗的) side of a culture without local food. After all, what is Thailand without a plate of Pad Thai, Canada without poutine (肉汁乳酪薯条), Mexico without tacos (玉米薄饼卷)? I am exaggerating a little, but you get the point.

Last summer, my friends and I went on a camping trip in the mountains. We were all excited about the adventure ahead, but little did we know what was in store for us.

We arrived at the campsite in the late afternoon. The sun was setting, and the sky was painted with hues of orange and pink. We set up our tents and started a fire to cook our dinner. As we sat around the fire, we planned our activities for the next day. We decided to go on a hike to see the nearby waterfall.

The next morning, we woke up early and set out on our hike. The trail was steep and narrow, but the scenery was breathtaking. We passed through the forests and crossed the streams. As we got higher, the air became colder and thinner. We had to stop frequently to catch our breath.

After a few hours of hiking, we finally reached the waterfall. It was amazing. The water fell down from a great height, and the mist created a rainbow. We sat down to catch our breath and take in the beauty of the waterfall.

But our adventure was far from over. As we were about to leave, we noticed dark clouds gathering overhead. It started raining heavily, and we realized that we had not brought any rain gear. We were completely soaked(湿透)and trembling in the cold. We decided to take shelter in a nearby cave until the rain stopped.

The cave was dark and damp, but it gave us a brief relief from the rain. We sat there for what seemed like hours, waiting for the rain to stop. But it only got worse. The thunder was so loud that it echoed through the cave, and the lightning was so bright that it lit up the cave like daylight.
