The buildings inside Longfu Temple Area are not just slabs of concrete or bricks and mortar (灰泥) — they have     1    the bustling and prosperity of Beijing for centuries. With traces of time deeply imprinted, the area stands silently and awaits its     2    start.

Built in 1452 and rebuilt in the 9th year during Emperor Yongzheng’s reign, Longfu Temple was the only temple in Beijing to accommodate both lamas and monks, and later became a famous    3    for temple fairs — perhaps the first choice to enjoy the authentic flavors of older Beijing and learn about the local culture.

Unfortunately, it was destroyed by a fire in 1901, and the nine-story building was restored in 1988on the original site. Its    4    ended abruptly in another devastating fire in 1993, and the place was turned into a place for restaurants, a market for clothing and small commodities, and a digital square.

The first phase of its renovation started with the opening of a second M Woods Art Museum,     5    in the renovated buildings in Qianliang Hutong(small lane)in the Longfu Temple Area. It was a collaboration between the museum and the government of the Dongcheng District. Its inaugural exhibition, a solo art show titled “A Bigger Splash” by renowned British artist David Hockney, was    6    launched with Tate Britain and Tate Modern.

The night of M Woods Art community becomes bustling and    7     with a variety of cocktail bars and nightclubs, such as Jing A Taproom and the M Woods-affiliated nightclub Turtle.

Care Needed for Great Wall’s Preservation

Although the Huanghuacheng section of the Great Wall in Huairou, Beijing, was     1    as a key heritage site under state protection as early as March 2013, for years, local villagers have     2    it to a cash cow to collect “entrance fees” and “guide fees” from sightseers without the permission of the cultural relics and tourism authorities.

As long as the fee is     3    , tourists are allowed to climb the mountains along whose ridges the Great Wall meanders. The damages inflicted by the villagers’ “business” upon the Great Wall, which was     4    in the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty (1368 —1644), are self-evident. It is not rare for tourists to bring     5    bricks from the already run — down wall as a souvenir or to carve their names on the wall.

How can the local watchdogs of the tourism industry and the cultural relics protection departments sit back with folded arms ignoring the practice for such a long time is a question that still awaits an answer.

Reportedly, some of the money the villagers     6    finds its way into the pockets of those who are legally bound to protect the Great Wall. That’s why the villagers have become so assured and bold that they claim as natives to the area at the foot of the Great Wall, they are naturally entitled to profit from it, as if the Great Wall is their private property.

Unlike the Badaling section of the Great Wall in Yanqing, Beijing, which is     7    good care of as a showpiece of the nation’s historical heritage, most parts of the Great Wall have been weather — worn over the years without repair since the Manchurians from the north put an end to the rule of the Ming Dynasty, making the once important national defense project nothing but a wall running through the middle of the large Qing Empire.

Nearly one-third of the Great Wall built in the Ming Dynasty has     8    because of weathering and human causes over the past 300 years. Not to mention the parts that had been built before that.

With the Beidou satellite global navigation system in place and the advancement of technologies in other fields related to the protection of cultural heritage, the country is now better able to protect the Great Wall. But unless the malpractice of the grassroots authorities is addressed, no technology will be of practical assistance in     9    this historical legacy for future generations.

The Great Wall’s     10    length and magnificence are not reasons for its being left untended, but exactly why it should be well preserved.

Welcome to Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world and the Official Residence of the Queen of Britain. Over a period of nearly 1,000 years it has been     1    continuously, and altered and redecorated by monarchs(君主)one after the other. Some were great builders, strengthening the Castle against     2    and rebellion; others, living in more peaceful times, created a grand Royal residence. William the Conqueror chose the site, high above the river Thames and on the edge of a Saxon hunting ground. It was a day’s march from the Tower of London and intended to guard the western     3    to the capital. The outer walls of today’s structure are in the same position as those of the     4    castle built by William the Conqueror in the 1070s. The Queen uses the Castle both as a private home where she usually spends the weekend, and as a Royal residence at which she undertakes certain formal duties. Windsor Castle is     5    used by the Queen to host State Visits from overseas monarchs and presidents. Exploring Florence on Foot

Following a suggested schedule is a great way to pass by specific monuments, experiencing the best of each area to save you time and energy while allowing you to discover things you may have never noticed, particularly as Florence is so rich in details,     1     and monuments that you might not know where to look given the many choices!

Here are the three self-guided itinerary routes you can follow, divided     2     by areas of the city:

· The Centro Storico: The historical area around the Duomo

· The Oltrarno, the left bank of the Arno river

· A climb up to Piazzale Michelangeloand San Miniato

Travelling on foot, as opposed to a bicycle or bus (most of the center is closed off to cars),     3     a pace that opens your eyes to various hidden treasures that you would not have seen otherwise. I always love learning about a city and seeing the sights by walking from one place to the next (when they are in a reasonable distance) while making short detours down     4     streets that catch my attention.

If you’re instead interested in a(an)     5     walking tour, take a look at this selection. I always encounter small shops, stores, and unexpected treasures of the city that I would have never seen. And these are     6     the small things that make a city special and beautiful by simply following one of the proposed walking tours below, you can explore Florence in a fun and active way without     7     any of the top sights!

If you have several days to see the city, consider taking the time to visit the inside of some of the main     8     and using a whole day’s time to complete the tour. I like to get started early when walking in the city center because it is clear of tourist crowds, AND it is much cooler AND the morning light is stunning (great for photos)!

Finally, my friend, a travel planner, together with me, strongly     9     a place for your walking schedule—the “Centro Storico” or Historical Center around the Duomo. This plan allows you to see all of the main sights and some of the smaller hidden places in between what is considered the heart of the     10     center. Consider just taking the walk and admiring everything from the outside if you are short on time.

18th-century Grand Tour of Europe

The Grand Tour began in the 16th century and gained popularity during the 17th century. Privileged (有特权的) young European graduates     1    a trend where they travelled across the continent in search of art and cultural experiences upon their graduation. This practice, which grew to be     2    popular, became known as the Grand Tour. Speciality guidebooks, tour guides, and other aspects of the tourist industry were developed during this time to meet the needs of wealthy 20-something male and female travellers as they explored the European continent.

These young, classically educated Tourists were rich enough to fund multiple years abroad for themselves and they took full advantage of this. They carried letters of     3    and introduction with them as they departed from southern England to communicate with and learn from people they met in other countries. Some Tourists     4    to continue their education and broaden their horizons while abroad, some were just after fun and     5    travels, but most desired a combination of both.

A typical journey through Europe was long and     6    with many stops along the way. London was commonly used as a starting point and the Tour was usually kicked off with a difficult trip across the English Channel. Crossing the wide channel was and is not easy. Tourists in the 17th and 18th centuries risked seasickness, illness, and even shipwreck on this first     7    of travel.

Grand Tourists were     8    interested in visiting cities that were considered centres of culture at the time, so Paris, Rome, and Venice were not to be missed. The average Grand Tourist travelled from city to city, usually spending weeks in smaller cities and up to several months in the three     9    ones.

The vast majority of Tourists took part in similar activities during their exploration with art at the centre of it all. Once a Tourist arrived at a destination, he would look for     10    and settle in for anywhere from weeks to months, even years. Though certainly not an overly trying experience for most, the Grand Tour presented a unique set of challenges for travellers to overcome.

Palaces are known for their beauty and splendor, but they offer little protection against attacks. It is easy to defend a fortress, but fortresses are not designed with the comfort of a king or queen in mind. When it comes to structures that are both     1     and well-fortified, the classic European castle is the pinnacle of design. Across the ages castles changed, developed, and eventually fell out of use, but they still command the     2     of our culture.

Castles were     3     built in England by Norman invaders in 1066. As William the Conqueror     4     through England, he fortified key positions to secure the land he had taken. The castles he built allowed the Norman lords to retreat to safety when threatened by English     5    . Castles also served as bases of operation for offensive attacks. Troops were summoned to, organized around, and deployed from castles. In this way castles served both     6     and defensive roles in military operations.

Not limited to military purposes, castles also served as offices from which the lord would administer control over his fiefdom. That is to say, the lord of the land would hold court in his castle. Those that were socially beneath the lord would come to report the affairs of the lands that they     7     and pay tribute to the lord. They would     8     disputes, handle business, feast, and enjoy festivities. In this way castles served as important social centers in medieval England. Castles also served as symbols of power. Built on prominent sites     9     the surrounding areas, castles constantly loomed in the background of many peasants’ lives and served as a daily     10     of the lord’s strength.
