1 . In the past, early travelers used the oceans and waterways as highways to bring goods to different places.     1     Nowadays, cruise ships (游船) can take people on breathtaking journeys along scenic waterways around the globe. Here are some of the reasons you might end up loving this kind of travel.

Cruise ships are known for their food. Some of the best cruise ships have an believable variety of food to choose from at every meal.     2     So you don’t need to pay extra money for meals. With all the food choices, it can seem like all your favorite high-end restaurants have come along with you on your vacation.

3     Cruise ships provide fun activities after supper. The activities on cruises can be themed, such as a New Orleans’ party, children’s themes, or Las Vegas-style. Magic shows, music, and theatre are standard (标准的) programs. In addition, many ships have several bars, and of course, free wi-fi.

The actual rooms on cruise ships range from small to large, depending on the level of the price. Going up higher can get you a double room with beautiful water views. But it is more expensive. In fact, cruise ships offer elevators (电梯) and stairs for you to enjoy the views from the top.     4     Besides, you won’t spend much time in the room.

Traveling on a cruise ship is one of the easiest ways to see certain parts of the world. If you’re afraid of flying, cruise ship travel is a great way. Cruise ships leave from Florida, California, Seattle, New York, ports along the Mississippi River, and the Great Lakes.     5

A.The evenings are seldom dull.
B.Meals are included in the cruise price.
C.This is the easiest way to see the world.
D.So at that time towns and cities grew along rivers.
E.Decide before you book which ship you are interested in.
F.You don’t have to choose the expensive rooms for a better view.
G.With those choices, you can take an enjoyable vacation and never take a flight.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述了科学家揭开古罗马建筑千年不衰的秘密。

3 . The huge structures of ancient Rome have survived for thousands of years—a testament to the abilities and wisdom of Roman engineers, who perfected the use of concrete. But how did their construction materials help keep grand buildings like the Pantheon(万神殿) (which has the world’s largest unreinforced dome)and the Colosseum(斗兽场)standing for more than 2,000 years?

Roman concrete, in many cases, has proven to be longer-lasting than modern concrete, which can worsen within decades. Now, scientists behind a new study say they have uncovered the mystery ingredient that allowed the Romans to make their construction material so durable and build splendid structures in challenging places such as docks, sewers and earthquake zones.

The study team, including researchers from the United States, Italy and Switzerland, analyzed 2,000-year-old concrete samples that were taken from a city wall at the archaeological site of Privernum, in central Italy, and are similar in composition to other concrete found throughout the Roman Empire.

They found that white chunks(块)in the concrete, referred to as lime clasts(石灰碎屑),gave the concrete the ability to heal cracks that formed over time. The white chunks previously had been overlooked as evidence of careless mixing or poor-quality raw material.

The new finding could help make manufacturing today’s concrete more sustainable, potentially shaking up society as the Romans once did.“Conerete allowed the Romans to have an architectural revolution,”Masic said,“Romans were able to create and turn the cities into something that is extraordinary and beautiful to live in. And that revolution basically changed completely the way humans live.”

A.To express respect to Romans.
B.To introduce the topic of the text.
C.To show the wisdom of Roman engineers.
D.To prove the uniqueness of Roman architecture.
2. What make Roman architecture stand for more than 2,000 years according to the finding?
A.Complicated mixing skills.
B.Splendid architectural structures.
C.Challenging locations of the buildings.
D.White chunks in ancient Roman concrete.
3. What does Masic think of the new finding?
A.Important.B.Valueless.C.Unexpected.D.Doubtful.
4. In which section of a newspaper can we find the text?

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要描述了作者和女儿前往南极洲的经历。

5 . Getting to Antarctica is not easy. The few who are lucky enough to visit this most mysterious continent do so by ship. To reach Antarctica, ships must pass through an extremely violent area of ocean called the Drake Passage, considered to be the roughest stretch of sea on the planet.

Walls of water thirty, sometimes forty feet high continually crashed against our ship for two solid days. We would hold on to a rope inside the ship while being violently tipped (倾斜) to one extreme side, then to the other, and then back again. My daughter Claire and I were as mentally prepared as we could be.

About two and a half days after entering the Drake Passage, the waters calmed. Soon, we noticed small black spots on nearby pieces of floating ice. Emperor penguins (企鹅)! Then, we began the two-mile hike over the ice to the penguin colony. Within several hundred yards, small groups of emperors, perhaps ten or so at a time, greeted us, sliding on their bellies and making their wonderful noises, sort of a long, high-pitched sound.

One day two adult emperors with their three chicks following them approached Claire, who was resting on the ice. They left the chicks with her, as if she were the babysitter. Twenty minutes later they returned to collect the chicks. And I will never forget the penguin that, when I jokingly asked which way back to the helicopters, pointed a wing in the correct direction. Every night aboard our safe and warm ship, we thought about what it takes to survive in Antarctica, an incredibly harsh (恶劣的) place.

But each day on the ice, we also thought about the Drake Passage, the impact of the large body of water we had to endure to get where we were. Over the course of our visit, we came to respect the power of that sea. We still talk about the penguins, as I’m sure we always will. But we talk about the Drake Passage, too. Both experiences were unforgettable, an one would not have been possible without the other.

1. Why is the Drake Passage mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.The water in the area is usually calm.
B.People can see very attractive scenery there.
C.It is quite a dangerous section of the journey.

2. What is the theme of the third paragraph?
A.The visitors appreciated the penguins.
B.The living habits of emperor penguins.

D.The appearance and shape of emperor penguins.
3. What can we infer from the fourth paragraph?
A.Penguins try to avoid human beings.
B.Penguins are not afraid of human beings.
C.Claire played with the two adult penguins for a long time.
D.Claire led the young penguins to where the adult penguins stayed.
4. What does the underlined word “endure” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Promote.B.Break.C.Arrange.D.Experience.

8 . There is no better way for a foreigner to understand China and its people than firsthand experience.     1

The experience of traveling around China has paid off handsomely, both in aspects of personal enrichment and in my ability to do my job well as an editor. When news articles mention places in China, I can often visualize(视觉化) them.

There was an article, for example, about the people of Guoliang village, built on the top of a remote cliff(悬崖) in Henan province.     2     They used hand tools to dig an amazing tunnel through hard rock to achieve that goal.

I have seen that tunnel and, having done so, acquired a vivid understanding of that incredible task. But what has stuck with me above all other memories of China was an experience at Beijing’s Temple of Heaven.

It was a pleasant summer evening, just at sunset. My wife and I were walking through the gate of the temple park to enjoy the dusky calm. Suddenly, I heard what sounded like distant voices raised in song.     3     The sound grew louder as I approached until I finally came to the source—a group of maybe 30 ordinary people gathered in a loose circle, singing joyfully.

4     But I could follow the melody(旋律) and harmony, taking advantage of a small amount of vocal training and practice from my distant past. And so I joined in, adding my voice to help send the sound to heaven.

The Chinese people standing nearby offered smiles of welcome. It was a moment of unity. The politicians might call it a people-to-people exchange. For me, the group represented a feeling of love, like a family.

It was over all too soon, and everybody left.     5     I couldn’t help but wonder. If whole nations could sing together, wouldn’t the world be a better place?

A.I didn’t know the Chinese lyrics(歌词).
B.However, I didn’t want to be rude.
C.I went to investigate out of curiosity.
D.However, the feeling stayed with me.
E.They needed to connect with the outside world.
F.I will always be grateful to be given that opportunity.
G.The travel to Guoliang village always sticks in my mind.

文章大意:这是一篇议论文。文章告诉读者为什么丑陋的建筑值得保存。

9 . Time and time again, I hear someone ask why anyone would want to keep an “ugly” building or a building that is dirty and clearly in need of work. I think you could say we preservationists (文物保护者) look at buildings through a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the story in the simple lines, the book behind the cover.

Take the Queen Emma Building for example. While people may remember that building being named as one of the ugliest buildings in town, the angle from which a preservationist will view the building is that it is uniquely constructed with an artistical brise-soleil (遮阳板) to block the sun. The designer used standard concrete bricks to form a decorative wall. Unfortunately, the brise-soleil was removed in 2011, making the building look like many of the contemporary buildings in town.

Sometimes people remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “very unpleasant” piece of architecture and can’t get over their anger, even when that building becomes an important part of our story. This is particularly true in San Francisco where many preservationists themselves dislike anything newer, than the Victorian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed to appreciate the Victorian buildings and let many get torn down several decades ago, but those losses also tell another important story. It tells the story of the 1950s and 1960s when there was hope for a more equal society with inexpensive housing for the working class. Should that history be wiped from our memories?

Preservation is not just about keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but about conveying pars of our history — not just the history of huge events, but the story of how everyone used to go to a certain corner market. Our history cannot be told only in buildings that meet someone’s criteria of beauty; sometimes our history is painful, but no less important.

1. How do preservationists see buildings?
A.They focus on their value rather than appearance.
B.They pay great attention to ancient buildings.
C.They are devoted to repairing famous buildings.
D.They prefer ugly buildings to beautiful ones.
2. What does the author think of removing the brise-soleil of the Queen Emma Building?
A.It’s confusing.B.It’s pleasing.
C.It’s regrettable.D.It’s unbelievable.
3. Why were many Victorian buildings in San Francisco torn down?
A.To wipe the history of the Victorian era.
B.To make land available for cheap housing.
C.To work off the deep anger of the working class.
D.To restore the architecture before the Victorian era.
4. What is the author’s intention of writing this passage?
A.To introduce some buildings with historical value.
B.To explain the reason why architects make ugly buildings.
C.To praise the work of preservationists.
D.To stress the importance of preserving ugly buildings.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了过度旅游的概念,所导致的问题以及解决方法。

10 . With visitor numbers around the world increasing towards pre-pandemic levels, the issue of overtourism is once again rearing its head. When locals in the charming Austrian lakeside village of Hallstatt staged a blockade(封锁)of the main access tunnel, asking visitors to “think of the children”, it highlighted what can happen when places start to feel overrun by tourists.

The term “overtourism” is relatively new, having been invented over a decade ago to highlight the increasing numbers of visitors taking a toll on cities, landmarks and landscapes. In essence, it is too many people in one place at any given time. There are the wide-reaching effects, such as climate change. Coral reefs, like the Great Barrier Reef and Maya Bay, Thailand are being degraded from visitors diving and touching the corals. More localized issues are affecting locals, too. Renters are being driven out by landlords in favour of turning properties into holiday lets, and house prices are escalating as a result. As visitors and rental properties outnumber local residents, communities are being lost.

Overcrowding is an issue for both locals and tourists. It can ruin the experience of sightseeing for those trapped in long queues, unable to visit museums, galleries and sites without advance booking, rising costs for basics like food, drink and hotels, and faced with the inability to experience the wonder of a place in relative solitude. Justin Francis, co-founder and CEO of Responsible Travel, a tour operator that focuses on more sustainable travel, says “Social media has concentrated tourism in hotspots and worsened the problem, and tourist numbers globally are increasing while destinations have a finite capacity. Until local people are properly consulted about what they want and don’t want from tourism, we’ll see more protests.”

Of the 800 residents in the UNESCO-listed village of Hallstatt, around 100 turned out in August to show their displeasure and to push for a limit on daily visitors and a curfew(宵禁)on tour coach arrivals. Elsewhere, residents in Venice fought long and hard for a ban on cruise ships, with protest flags often hanging from windows. In Rome, sitting at popular sites, such as the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, has been restricted by the authorities.

There are ways to better manage tourism by promoting more off-season travel, limiting numbers where possible and having greater regulation within the industry. Encouraging more sustainable travel and finding solutions to reduce friction between residents and tourists could also have positive impacts. Promoting alternative, less-visited spots to redirect travelers may also offer some benefits.

1. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.An introduction to the main topic.B.A tale to attract readers’ attention.
C.The background information of a story.D.The explanation of the term “overtourism”.
2. Which of the following is not affected negatively by overtourism?
A.The environment.B.The local communities.
C.The landowners.D.The renters.
3. What can be inferred form Paragraph 3 and 4?
A.Overcrowding merely causes trouble for the locals.
B.Social media contributes to overtourism in a sense.
C.Scenic spots can receive infinite tourists as long as locals don’t protest.
D.Tourists are banned to stay at the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps.
4. What’s the text mainly about?
A.Some wonderful tourist destinations around the world.
B.Comparison of tourism before and after the pandemic.
C.The harm to locals’ life caused by overcrowding.
D.The damage and possible solutions of overtourism.
